mxtech1 Added a reply to Harley-Davidson Takes LiveWire Public, Announces New Arrow Powertrain
12/13/2021 6:57pm The LiveWire brand is a joint venture between HD and Kymco, as well as a SPAC for funding. From what I can gather, Kymco Taiwan is being leveraged to aid with engineering and manufacturing of the new model, HD will use its existing network of dealerships for sales and service. So in all reality, the bike being marketed here is...

mxtech1 Started a new thread Austrian 450s Cost of Oil Changes
12/12/2021 6:37am Put together a list of 10w50 oils that meet JASO T903 MA2 oils, recommended for the KTM/GasGas/Husqvarna 450 MX models, to understand how most of the common oils stack up to each other in price. The results were tallied and seemed worthy of sharing with the community! I used retail cost (Motosport.com, RM ATV/MC, Amazon, Blud) to figure the cost...

mxtech1 Added a reply to Steel vs. Aluminum Engine Hangers on 2022 HRC Machines: Luxon, 3DP, ML512 Insight?
12/11/2021 9:50pm Great explanation. Do you have a sketch of a free body diagram for the top hangers and how does that change when the bike is accelerating vs. landing from a jump vs. under hard braking etc. Have you ever put micro-strain gages on a set of hangers to collect field data to use for FEA?

12/11/2021 7:14pm I just can’t comprehend how some folks argue with the OEM recommendations. If KTM says 10hrs, believe your ass they spent thousands of hours testing and Hundreds of thousands of dollars to get to that CONSERVATIVE recommendation.

12/11/2021 5:53pm Stiffness is stiffness, it doesn't matter whether a mount is made from aluminum, titanium, carbon, steel, or cheese. All that matters is how stiff the mount is. Stiffness comes from the material properties AND the geometry of the part. Keeping is simple, let's just look at bending stiffness of a plate due to material stiffness and thickness. And let's use steel as a baseline in comparisons. Titanium is roughly 1/2 the stiffness of steel (and also about 1/2 the weight). Aluminum is about 1/3 the stiffness of steel (and also about 1/3 the weight). So for the same weight of...

mxtech1 Added a reply to Steel vs. Aluminum Engine Hangers on 2022 HRC Machines: Luxon, 3DP, ML512 Insight?
12/11/2021 5:53pm There are certain applications where assuming the sheet steel is purely isotropic isn’t good enough. In the past, ive processed many parts where we need to eliminate steel grain variability from the equation. We typically do this in the CNC nesting software so that parts can only be nested such that they are always going the same grain direction, which...

12/11/2021 5:29pm Indeed. Until we see multi post rig testing of different mounts on MX bikes with force/deflection objective measurement correlated with on track performance improvement it will be all rider subjective. Rider feel with the marketing BS over the top and positive affirmation bias by the consumer powers it now.

12/7/2021 8:22pm Factory bikes are sophisticated enough to actively manage the amount the rear wheel slip during closed course racing and the AMA rule book has not been amended properly to keep up with these technological advancements. Nor do they have the technical ability to inspect for violations. The “traction control” rule was written decades ago when the powers-at-be determined such technology...

12/7/2021 8:06pm “Influencers” who do nothing more than strip a bike down, source all the cleanup/coating work, pay to have an engine and suspension built, and then bolt it back together ARE NOT bike builders.
