Its amazing to me that Texas has only produced one MX Champ and one SX champ in the history of motocross. Howerton and Stackable are still the only two. In fact only one other rider from Texas has ever won a National or SX Main, being Steve Wise. All that was done in the 70's and 80's. No winners or champs in the 90's or 00's. Blake Wharton has a Regional SX main event win in the teens. So far no winners in the 20's.
Lots of champions around Texas and spent a lot of time racing in Texas like Windham, Cooper, Bogle, Tedesco & Nichols.
My wife used to work with one of his family members when we were in our 20s. I was told he lived in hixson for awhile and had a practice track there somewhere at one time.
Matt Barnett lived in Georgia most of his life. I know someone else claimed him for Illinois, but he lived in Georgia during his Supercross championship.
He also made a lot of the tracks in Georgia back in the day.
Do we get to claim RC and Star Yamaha and Millsaps?
Speaking of Brian Swink from Michigan.
Back around 1985, used to race pretty regularly at a track called Milan that was run by Barry Mayo. Track is still there and called Twisted Mx.
Anyhow hate to admit this but, I had a 1985 RM250 and was racing a hare scrambles there that used other parts of the property in addition to the usual track. While going down a muddy, sloppy rutted straight on the 250 (thinking I was moving along fairly decent) another bike flies past me like I'm standing still ... it was Brian on an 80cc bike
Oklahoma-
Canard
Nichols
Reynard
Of course Coop
-Honorable mentions
Chuck Cooper
Johnny Marley
Kenny Bartram
Cody Gilmore, can’t remember if he was an Okie
Brett Cue, not a racer, but a damn good kid
Albertsons?
I think that Jody Weisel’s load of plastic statues from Chicken Licks Raceway has to count for something……!
What about Davi?
And our Local badass Sean Dukes!
Yeah I know, Eddie never got very big.

And then there's the kid from California that won the unthinkable in 1982...unthinkable for an American...especially for a kid that was an honest to God privateer...until he got that ride from Honda...
From Wikipedia...
By 1982 he had earned a place in the American Honda factory racing team. That same year he beat the vaunted Europeans at the 500cc U.S. Motocross Gran Prix at perhaps the toughest motocross tracks in the United States, Carlsbad. The victory would be the biggest of his career.[2] In 1982 he also won both races in the Motocross des Nations as well as the Trophee des Nations, becoming the first rider to win both motos of both events in the same year.
The MXdN & TdN aspect of all of that was pointed out to me by a guy we call "The Man"...on an airplane ride to an SX a few years back. His point: "You know, Danny was the only one to do that. That's a pretty big deal, isn't it?"
Back in the day, when he'd race a Yamaha 125, a Suzuki 250 and a Maico 490 all in the same day...& win EVERYTHING...Danny was simply really good to have around on the NorCal MX scene.
In my lifetime I have lived in Berrien Springs Michigan, Madison Tennessee, Laurel Maryland, Charlotte North Carolina and York South Carolina so the list is pretty long.
My question is what states have not produced a champion?
You guys must be under 40. Guy Cooper. 125 Championship, World FIM Supercross.
Chase Sexton
Hoffmaster AX ?
Broc Hepler is the only one that I know from PA who got close. The damn snow slows us down for five months out of the year.
Pit Row
Look up Tony DiStefano. He won a few championships in the 70’s and would have added more if it were not for an eye injury. Tony D was a big thing from your state.
I think they’ve been in the media a bit lately, so you may have heard of some champs from my home state of Queensland: Jett & Hunter Lawrence.
Brandon Jesseman 125 sx title, if it wasn’t for Stewart he would’ve had 1or 2 national titles. Chicago snow, Indiana lake effect snow, Ohio rain until east then a mix today. Back to rain at Pa. St line. Wi. Had some fast guys ovr the yrs. They never got any support or expense money, parts allowance, etc. 1 guy Eron Ezerins race Fri night Lake Geneva sx, then Sunday Nuclear series in Byron, iL. Make up to 4,800 a week. Win regional national AX races, local races, in winter race in Florida a little. He beat Florida,s fastest guy. He pissed saying who the F is that Ezerins. He always raced stock engines & pipes. Clean house in 125,250 a,+ 25 on the red Bud night track & make good money. 200 or 250 % pay out + 400 a class from Suzuki. He raced the 98 natl on a stock rm125 with a stuck ring . His bike sounded like a vacuum cleaner. He didn’t go after the sx& natl series because it paid nothing back then. He lived in West alis- Milwaukee. Brad Modjewdki holeshot 06 Millville the race RC lapped the field. Fast guy but probably 3-4th in the st. Lead the rm cup in Vegas in 99. Pastana was hot then. The locals beat Lechien on his factory kx500 on a big hilly sand track . The locals hv the speed but not the money to race the nationals or sx. Full gate of experts pays a lot more than 5th at a national.
You've got to be kidding right?
Lol...I added the upsidedown smiley thing to my post but it doesn't show up when someone quotes it unless you click the red "more". Oklahoma has had a few fast fellas. Did Reynard ever win a series?
Never heard of Matt Barnett, but Mark Barnett lived in Alabama during his championship runs.
Nope you would think he had a 125 sx or AX title but nothing there. 4 or 5 national wins his 98 wins on a Primal impulse rm125 by far his best. A AX title was hard to get when he raced AX. I think a state title is really cool. Not sure if it’s gonna work out. But I would like to go after the 125 title in Wi. Super fast kids top 5,s at mini O,s , etc. Has a rider ever won 250,450c, b, 30b, 40b, 50, then move to expert in 1 yr. I would like to try that. People be like why you racing 250c? I would say because I can. lol it’s a dirt bike race don’t make a big deal about it.
I know, it’s wild. There’s a been a ton of race winners and champions that spent a lot of time racing in Texas growing up but only a couple natives that ever went on to win as a pro. Since Wharton and Cunningham, have we had any even sniff a podium?
Can Texas claim partial credit for Wilbur? Even though he never won in Supercross, I do claim Josh Demuth because he was living here before he started winning.
Spellcheck got me. Yeah, that’s right it was Alabama. Thanks
New Mexico gave us Jason Anderson
I think DD finished second in 250 Supercross one of the years he was with PC. The Ice man was bad ass.
And don’t forget Ivan Tedesco!
