I’m surprised he’s still trying to race. He’s going to be 36, best days are behind him, a young family and presumably plenty of money.

I think the guy just loves to race. He's capable of still putting in some good finishes here and there , and if he can afford it , is having fun.....why not do it for as long as you can? At his age , once you retire , that's it. He wouldn't be able to come back after a year or two off.

I know some on here give the guy shit for sticking around to long , but I honestly think it's pretty damn cool. He's had one hell of a career.....why not make it even better?

Hell, I totally agree. I'm a fickle Reed fan. I like to cheer the guy when he's showing the younger riders the fast way around a rough track, because as an old guy...he's kind of a hero at 36. Then, I get kind of pissed when he turns into "Crybaby Chad" and blames everybody and everything besides himself when he rides like a spode. But, yeah...if he's still into it, and can still draw sponsors and still has an autograph line a mile long, and can still turn a fast lap...why not? I just hope he can walk away on his own terms instead of a "Millville" happening again, and him not being so lucky.

I was just thinking along the lines of risk-reward.

Its plausible that he ends up on the White Bomber. After all his 250 2-stroke has white plastics which could've been an easter egg, or it could mean nothing. He could be saying whatever bike he rides is getting white plastic.

He has turned from could win guy to Nick Wey who likes to race.. only thing that he thinks Factories will support him like years ago.

It shows you how down the tubes this sport has gone. Is too expensive now. Companies can't afford it anymore. It starts with the Gas companies charging too much. Then people thought four strokes were better, kept buying them and every price of bike and accessory has doubled in a decade. They started it, and we (the customers) finished.

Millsaps said he could tell the difference in his practice frame and race frames.

Reed and Ferry used to complain about stretched steel frames too.

Being a very long time fan of Reed it pains me to speculate but... I think we may very well have seen the last of him in AMA Supercross... His recent comments in Racer X about focusing on side projects and rarely riding don't inspire a lot of confidence for his racing future

Not disagreeing about his desire for top pay, although if racing is advertising isn't Reed still a big ROI?

But to say he can't win, this season, is doing a disservice to Reed's entire history of coming back and showing he can still do it some Saturday nights when he feels it.

Just my opinion. Smile

Knowing what I do about testing,

he would have to change ONLY the frame back and forth on the same day and same bike in every single other way besides the frame change.

More likely, he jumps on his entire race bike and feels it's better. The frame may be only a small part of that overall feel, or no part at all.

Time for his big coming backs are gone. I would love to see Reed and JS7 back strong like super heroes but top guys are working so hard with full factory supports that its just impossible to win if you don't put hard work and good program together. We all remember some good fights at track when they really wanted to win.

I would venture to guess Millsaps, Reed, and Ferry are all part of that 1% of extremely hard users.

Fair point.

I guess I'm saying if Reed came into 2018 in peak form (for 36 Years old) and put himself in the front multiple nights he could still come out up top before he retires.

Now is that worth it at this point for Chad? I would think not, but then again the very drive that creates a man like Chad Reed is what separates him from most. The interview read like he is NOT in the form or mindset to come back and win.

If Chad Reed thinks he can still do it, I'm going to trust the man that has actually been there and done that, not some dudes on the internet. Chad knows what it takes, what he needs to feel to be competitive, and if he thinks he still has it, that's good enough for me. Hopefully he gets something together and we see him at A1.

I agree his confidence is not there at all like previous years. A lot of flash back posts lately I think deep down he knows his career could be coming too a close. Spewin

I think what tek14 was getting at was yea, Reed was moving toward the front until Anderson parked him, but he was only gaining because Tomac intentionally slowed the pace to try and get others to pass Dungey. Had Tomac not slowed, Reed probably never would have even smelled the leaders exhaust.

Not to mention, Reed still claims that his '04 YZ was his personal favorite.

Then using that logic, Anderson, who won the race, wasn't fast enough to win that race. Reed was on the move that race, and had a couple other races where he had a legit chance at winning. Didn't he finish 2nd a couple seconds off Dungey earlier? He definitely struggled most of the year, but he's still capable of winning on the right night.

Yea, Reed is totally washed up and couldn't even sniff the front of the field in 2017. He put in Nick Wey results all year... oh wait...

Yes he struggled on the Yamaha, so did Cooper. But on tracks that suited the loose nature of the Yamahammer he was a top 5 guy.

He passed Anderson when there was minute and five seconds left in the clock. Anderson then went and won the race, so there is no denying that he was in the battle for win. Of course, there is reasons why he was in that position but that wont chage the fact that he was in fight.

Barring an injury or mechanical breakdown, ET or MM will be the 2018 SX champion.

There are a handful of riders that could win a race or two, and run up the front most of the time. CR is one of them.

Many pro riders would be happy to get a few podiums, and finish in the top 10. And that’s the pinnacle of their achievements in the 450 Pro class. Yet, if it looks like CR is in this position he should, according to some keyboard warriors, retire immediately.

There seems to be two kinds of pro riders:
Those that burn themselves out in a calculated career. Balancing risk/reward/financial success.
And
Those that love racing.

RC, RV, RD are the former.

CR, Valentino Rossi, Doug Henry (raced after paralysis!) are the later.
So is every vet rider.

If Reed put in a Dungey style off season, he would be a top 3 guy. But he won't put in that type of work. So I guess he'll have to settle for 9th in the championship. 6 MFGs, 3-4 paid riders (satellite and factory), you get 18-24 spots. So instead of telling him he should quit, go tell the other 15 riders to quit instead.
