Who would you want most to write a book about their life in this sport or industry? Explain why

6/6/2025 6:33pm

I feel we already have Chads story. Otherwise I would like that probably still. These guys are the people I want to read books from. Not Movie stars etc. So i there are so many.

That being said. I think RV or Webb would be really good. It takes a certain type of person to get such a beat down every week as an amateur. You be so close but all the story is about them (Allessi or AC). Than turn pro and destroy the narrative . I think thats what builds there toughness

I second the OP’s wish for biographies of Stewart Senior and Junior, but I won’t be holding my breath. As much as I love that family and respect (just about) everything they have done, their record on managing their media image is not great. I would think they have already been approached by numerous writers (like ESPN Magazine’s Chris Palmer did with McGrath) wanting to help tell their story (remember the rumors of a biopic produced by Tom Cruise’s company?), so it’s telling that a book hasn’t materialized yet. What could be the hold up?

I would like to see some biographies from heroes from the 70s: Jimmy Weinert, Tony Distefano, John DeSoto, Roger DeCoster and Heikki Mikola. And let’s not forget Rolf Tibblin (sp?), the first international trainer!

There's a Weinert biography, I think I got it through Amazon, within a few days, even here in OZ : 20250607 154632Fittingly, featuring that famous picture of him and Tony D!

One of the Russian riders like Guennady  Moiseev (I know I butchered that).  It would be cool to learn if they were forced to live in training camps, made to do experimental drugs and therapies, given team orders to take out other riders based on nationality etc.   Those guys always looked so intimidating! Also, it would be a cool side bar to learn about their equipment.

Roger Decoster, hands down! The guy has seen, heard & "done" more in this sport than anyone else I can think of. I respect him greatly (as I've noted here in many posts), but he seems to draw a lot of hate around here & elsewhere for his MXoN involvement. I'd like to read an honest, personal biography about him, where he could come clean regarding his life in racing the World Championship, his work with Suzuki, Honda & KTM...and what he has based his MXoN decisions on.

Just a book on 90s moto. Could probably have ChatGPT go through this thread and get someone started.

My book would be called "Real dirt". Brad Lackey and Kenny Roberts have some "gems".  Jim Holley "Tails from the road".    Brian Deegan has a lot to tell as well.

All three mentions would be great. James would be my first pick. He was so private as a racer it would be interesting to know what was going on behind closed doors.

Regarding his MXoN picks, I'm  sure a lot of it has to do with choosing riders that WILL actually go, riders that are healthy, not changing teams and riders from teams that will actually support the MXoN choice.

Troy and Mitch would be terrific. Anyone active across the frontlines for generations of riders would be full of stories and be great.

Reed would be another good rider read probably, given his sharp tongue.

I follow Ross Maeda (Donn's older brother) on Facebook. He always has really cool stories to tell about lots of interesting moto people. His writings are easy to follow and I bet he could write a book without help from a ghostwriter. Most of his anecdotes are funny and involve factory riders, Mitch Payton, local homeless people, Kung-fu television shows, and/or visiting Japanese engineers getting arrested by Corona Police.

He, himself has an interesting story - from beginner to local expert in the '70s/'80s, to test rider for KYB, to starting Enzo. Super cool dude.

Kooksy. What on earth lead him down the path to have the takes that he has now, and the audacity to blatantly share them. LOL

I read ALOT. The best motorcycle riding books are "Leathered" by John Hopkins, and "Riding Man" by Mark Gardiner. If you can read I highly recommend these books. Gardiner's book has an accompanying movie "One man's island". It is a not to miss.

After watching the Gypsy episodes on both Pete Fox and Mitch Covington, I'd read any book by those two.

Joel Robert. An early (the first?) badass wildman. Six world championships, all the wile boozin, smokin, and lady carousin. (at least as his reputation goes). Just to find out what the inside scoop of pro motocross was all about in those early and very influential years, would be very cool. I'd think Robert's telling would much more entertaining than say, Decoster, Hallman, etc., Adolf Weil's story would be interesting.

John Hopkins - there's a bloke that has gone close to - well, well over the edge. I'm glad he survived his 'journey'. It's an interesting read, to say the least.

I've both the Mark Gardiner book and DVD. I think last year  / the year before , or both years, he was part of the IOM TT coverage team, and, his insights, as an American, were quite good.

I buy  and read books at a crazed level - according to my better half. Hey, they are things you can keep forever, not stuff you just p**s out, or breathe in, at a big cost, both financially, and heath wise.

And, when I cark it, just my Full set of Motocourse Year Books, will garner quite a few thousand dollars for those I leave behind. Early volumes, can go for a couple of K each - if you can get them.

Endurance  : Toby Price is a pretty good, slightly recent read - he's been through a hell of a lot.

I agree with the guys who've said Mitch & TLD*, Bevo, and Jim Holley.

*This would have to be a collaborative between the two so we could get the full story.

Endurance: Toby Price, I will order it today Bear. My wife says there could be a naked super model in a bookstore or bike shop and I would never notice her. It's a disease, fiction, non-fiction, biographies, anything typically two books a week. Credit a Catholic school education and St. Patrick teaching me the mastery of the English language.

There are a few but my first pick has to be Roger. Hannah would be my second pick. I'd like to know more about Bob's aviation exploits, especially the years that he flew those insane race planes.
