How do Ralph and Jeff still have jobs?

They do a great job 99.1% of the time.

How about this. You watch the race next weekend and record your commentating. Upload it to the internet so everyone can listen. Maybe you’ll get recognized by Feld and take their jobs. Grinning

Are you a Tomac fan? Let’s get down to what’s really bothering you.
Exactly, not as easy as it looks. While recording your audition tape have someone in your ear shouting instructions too. Sometimes I scratch my head, but it’s not as easy as all you internet badasses make it seem.

A good broadcast team should be able to call a race well enough so that you can envision the action without seeing it. Say you had sound only, or you were receiving the audio over the radio. They could be a lot better. Last night was an exciting race and they were clumsy with the calling of it.

Neil Spalding! Never heard of him?? Google search him.
Every supercross & motocross broadcast needs a Neil Spalding in pit lane.

Ralph’s biggest problem is that he’s trying to do both of their jobs. Ralph gets into trouble when he tries to play color commentator. Problem is, since Jeff has nothing to offer, Ralph has to keep talking to prevent silence. Ralph is only supposed to be play by play. He’s forced to offer opinions because Jeff doesn’t have any.

Yeah didn't Ralph say "The front brake is really important to get the bike to pivot in the corner"?
Exactly. Jeff should be the one offering insider insight and filling the viewer in on technical aspects of the race. Since he isn’t doing it, it forces Ralph to offer his less experienced opinion. Ralph is only supposed to be describing what is going on on the screen. Jeff is supposed to be explaining the “whys” and “hows”.

Treat it like background noise. Makes watching easier.

What a bunch'o whiners. Main thing for me is that I'm overjoyed to watch live moto. Commentating is fine.

Nothing worse than a whiner except whining about whiners.

This team has been together a long time and has knowledge and skill and should be improving as they work together but they are not. IMO they are getting worse. Last night it was really noticeable.

Winner winner...this place is becoming more negative than the Facebooks. Who cares if the announcing is bad just watch the racing.

While I do enjoy listening to them, last night had to be the worst broadcast that I have heard from the Ralph/Fro combo..... Too many noobie mistakes from non noobie broadcasters... seems like fro's edibles kick in too early during the west coast rounds...

You forgot weddings....but yea I agree with OP, last night was really bad, a lot of mistakes and some really stupid conversation. I would like to see Blair get a shot at it, he always comes across as articulate and intelligible.

I think Emig is one of the best ever in the booth. He's a Supercross champion and hearing his take is genuine, it's as close to hanging out with a former top pro as many of us will ever get. I would hate to lose him.

And nothing against Ralph at all personally (he seems like an absolutely great guy) but that decision so many years ago now smacks of corporate suits making decisions to placate audiences with a "look, voice, and style" reminiscent of stick and ball sports, and that's a classic instance of how "experts" are not experts. They should have put their Steve Jobs hats on and thought outside the box a little, because this is not a motorsport, even though the bikes have motors, and it's not football. It's the most unique sport in the history of sports if you ask me, and had evolved it's own style. The decision makers should have been more attuned to that imo.

The REAL question is: Whoever ok’d that gear... how do they still have a job?

That gear should cost someone their career. Seriously. Fired. Sent to Siberia. Never to be heard from again.

It was pretty dumb, but he has said many dumb things in the past and will again soon. Tune in next week for something dumber.

I’m with you. All these people talking like they have more to offer than Ralph and Jeff. I personally like listening to them. We have been listening to Ralph for years and I hope they keep going. Weege is probably the only person that comes to my head that can do a superb job at narrating a race.

Ralph is okay for what he is there to do. Emig is just really not cutout for that job. If you you don't think weege and Langston do a way better job then you can't be reasoned with.

All they do is watch the monitor in front of them with the live feed. They are not watching the action live as it plays out on the track. Emig still gets nervous and off track but for the most part I think he brings a good perspective to the riders point of view.

Ralph needs to get off the mic. He's always cutting Emig off and going on 15 second tangents, then Emig has to drop his previous thought and go to a new one.

They need to try some different people. The commentary in the early 90's was better. Get Bailey back - I liked him.

Daniel Blair is pretty much the best on the team right now. He doesn't stutter and he's pretty clear and concise.

Carmichael was literally the worst at the trackside commentary but he was great doing Emig's job. He can talk about what's going on in the race in realtime pretty well but he cannot by any means read off a teleprompter.

Juliana Daniels was in scrubs or something... her outfit was weird. She adds nothing to the broadcast. At least get a female mx racer or someone actually in the industry in that place. Anyone can smile and read tweets. Give that job to someone passionate about the sport. Even Dahlgren was way better.

Ralph also said "great start for the top three".. No shit Sherlock... They are both terrible as far as I'm concerned, would love to have Weigandt up in the booth.

These two make mistakes all night long, half the time I feel like they have no idea what is going on. I totally understand that it’s live racing but come on... Ralph yelling that Plessinger made a mistake by crossing the line 3 seconds before the clock ran out... Jeff saying that McElrath is gonna lose the red plate after his crash. “Heavy red plates” “Mental mistakes” We need Jason Weigant and Grant Langston.
I like them both. I would guess the answer to your question is that nobody is willing and able to do a better job.

Get him riding the track on an RM250 with a live feed helmet cam and have Art Eckman and David Bailey in the commentary box. Those were the (best) days.... Sorry, just reminiscing.

Ralph and Jeff are doing a better job than the cat jersey designer.
We have 2 cats in my house. My 4 year old thinks the jersey is funny and wonders why the choices of Kawi green colored gear are slim pickings.

I like them. If you had a cross between Fergie and Jesus calling the races someone would complain. Translation:
No one is good enough for you champs!
