Bought an old roached out 97 YZ125 as my first bike. I remember the guy said we went through the whole bottom and top end! BRAND NEW! I didn't really know anything so seeing the HOT RODS and Motosport stickers on the bike made me think they definitely did some type of engine work to it.
After about 6 months, I started having issues. There was absolutely no way in hell that anybody replaced the bottom end in this bike, much less the piston. Had to send the cylinder off, new piston, transmission issues. Looking back I wouldve improved much faster if I had bought a newer bike, but I didnt know shit. However I learned a lot about working on my own shit.
Also, at 29 it is super annoying to hear someone say "Aren't you getting a little old to be doing that stuff?" I always tell them how I know people 40+ years older than me that ride and they always just shake their heads. It's like they can't fathom that someone would do something like this for fun. They get all confused. Why would you want to do that???
Ive heard countless times about how Im too old to ride. These people who have said it were each 100 pounds over weight. You can usually find them between Mcdonalds and their couch.
Not rumor, confirmed.
Statement isn't dumb. Just subject is off.
They are too old to ride.

"dirt bike racing is a cheap entry level gateway into racing"
Anything with POWERBAND.. Back in 84 my buddy came too football practice with a brand new 84 rm 125, he said the dealer told him it had a POWERBAND! Then everyone's bikes was getting them.
The dumbest thing most of us told ourselves, or our partners. " It won't cost much to race, we can afford it".
I heard many times "It's not a sport, you have an engine"...
😄
“You should check out Vital MX”
There was a kid in my neighborhood that had a Honda Z50. He said he was going to put a throttle on both sides of the handlebars so that it would go twice as fast.
I was 11 years old. Seemed plausible at the time.
As the late, great, Ernest Hemingway said, there are only three sports. Mountaineering, bullfighting, and motor racing. Everything else is just a game.
My favorite is always something like "I had x-something-or-other bike but I had to sell it before I killed myself, I was way too fast on it/way too reckless/some other excuse (I never pay much attention to these people)." Yeah, they bought too much bike for a beginner, jumped on, grabbed a handful of loud handle, shit their pants and sold the thing.
Oh, and the armor all on the front tire thing, does that Lucas silicone spray shit on the brake rotors count?
My fav has to be being told that his KDX 200 had 5, yes, 5 power bands installed, FROM THE FACTORY. AND, since it was a 2 stroke, it had waaaay more power delivery than the 8 month old 450 I had in the bed of my truck that day. I worked with this guy daily, and since his father owned the company I was working for at the time, it took all I had to bite my tongue and be quiet. Fast forward a year later, I am no longer working for his Dad anymore, and I am enjoying a practice day at a local truck. As fate would have it, he pulls in an parks beside me with his FULL FACTORY KDX in his truck. "Ready to get your ass smoked??"...... I said "sure". I followed him for about 3 laps on a deep ripped track, lugging around in 2nd and 3rd most of the way. I found a nice strip about 40 yards long with a couple inches of standing water in it, and you can probably figure out the rest...... To end this story, about 100 pounds of sloppy, chunked earth hit this spoiled bastard across his Dixies hoodie, and his goggle-less helmet. As I pulled in to take a break, he is loading up, albeit quickly, and he is pissed off! "Who the fuck brings a cheater bike to a local track???!!!???" I offered him a Gatorade, laughing under my breath, "Fuck you" was all I got. Never seen him since. For the record....... bone stock RMZ with backgrounds. I had a great day......
Aren't you too old and mature to ride dirt bikes. Or that's not hard (referring to decent size jumps). All from people who are clueless.
Referring to the forks as “front shocks”
This happens all the time with my mountain bike buddies
Anytime your stopped anywhere and anybody that you don't know comes and opens their delusional trap to comment the equivalent of " Big Gulps, well see you later"
piss off
This ones is a little more forgivable, as they were often called that to distinguish from rigid forks on mountain bikes.
Example: RockShox was a foundational brand in suspension forks on mountain bikes.
Pit Row
Correct. Forks are rigid…
What place did you get on the holeshot?
I think the most annoying maybe not dumbest thing is: “you race dirt bikes? You do back flips and stuff?” Swear what everyone asked me growing up in a small town. Which shows how popular Pastrana and the free style movement got back in the late 90’s early 2000’s. Also have a girl cousin that asked if MC still races not that many years ago haha
I have personally met at least 5 guys that “rode for Honda”. It’s always Honda and it’s always described that way.
I know a guy who is 100% convinced his 94’ CR250 does over 115 MPH.
No problem at all, if dropped from high enough.
😁😄
I was once told with a full confidence that 80cc bike is fastest on a deep sand track because it's lighter and therefore doesn't sink as much.
If you crash 8 times, get up 9 times. 🤷♂️
"Whatchya doing this weekend?"
"Going to the Motocross Pro National race."
"Are you racing it?"
"The motor does all the work for you"...
I thought it was dumb at 1st when an old timer told me, "Fear causes hesitation; hesitation causes pain!"
I guess he was right...
This was in like '93.
Guy says, yeah my buddy raced the Dallas SX in the eighties. He was super fast. He added nitrous to his bike. Was kicking their asses! Went for a pass on a triple and hit the nitrous and WAY over jumped in, broke his frame in half. He would have won that night.
I always thought there might have been some truth to that; Like he entered the race, wadded trying the triple and realized he was out of his element...
