I still have one very precise memory (after maybe ten years) of a dry river bed, littered with rocks and agonizing riders, that went on for miles. I thought I'd never see the end of it.
Worst motorcycle experience was in SE Asia: I borrowed a DP bike and went for a cruise. It was 45C/114F with 98% humidity. I thought things would improve if I opened the shield on the helmet, but that was just a blast furnace. On the other hand, life just goes on for people in those conditions - looking out the window of our A/C equipped SUV, you'd never know it was that hot.
I'm surprised there isn't a bunch of Aussies chiming in on this. I was in Perth, WA back in the late 90's when the O-zone hole regularly made the news. It was 45C - just a couple minutes outside and it felt like the sun's energy was eating into your skin.
Lots of cold stories in Canada: Numb Bum 24hr for one. And I've always tried to ride my MB to the office all year round, although it gets a little tough at -35 with snow...
Pit Row
I can tolerate heat ok but once it hits triple digits, I’m out. Not worth it.
Just over 23 years in Texas and I can easily say I've rode 100's of times in temps of over 100 and high humidity as well.
So far this year North Texas hasn't officially broke 100 air temp, (99 twice though so far) but I rode just 2 weekends ago when the heat index was 105 at Oak Hill.
Highest temp I've rode in here was probably 109 air temp. Highest heat index I've rode here was probably 113.
I've come in the pits many times, goggles already off, put bike on the stand, and immediately the helmet, gloves, jersey, come off, and I pour lots of cold water on my body. If it seems I'm not cooling down enough, I've taken my boots off, pulled the pants down and laid in the back of the truck or gotten into the truck, turned on the A/C and with the vents blowing full blast, sat in there for 15 minutes or so, until I was ready to go another 20 min on the bike.
One thing that has helped me is that I spend so much time outside in the heat (which lasts at least 4 months here) that I do believe I get acclimated to it somewhat.
Today...I wouldn't make a lap in those conditions without having to pull over. Ha!
The guy who was pitted next to us said I rolled in from the second moto and just fell over. Next thing I remembered was him splashing water on my face. He'd propped me up against a pine tree and was trying to cool me off. This was back in the days of cotton jerseys and hybrid leather pants, so no heat was escaping my body with all of that sh*t on, plus, a JT chest pro, and Scott boots.
We were real men back then, so we didn't seek medical attention just because someone got, "hot". We just drank a glass of milk and went about our business...actually, we were idiots. I'm sure at the very least I had heat exhaustion, and possibly low-level heat stroke.
The waiting between tests was the brutal part. The riding wasn’t bad.
Stayed closed to the lake and jumped in with my gear on. Stupid and young.
