Working in the school system it is just a word we don’t use anymore. Developmentally delayed or cognitive disability are the most often used terms used now. I don’t think what she said is the end of the world, but when your are in the spotlight people seem to hold you to a higher standard.
There is a long history of originally neutral words used to describe mentally handicapped person's being adopted by the general public as derogatory slang. Slow, special, moron, feeble-minded, etc. Time and again, people have shown themselves to be cruel and inconsiderate in using these words as insults. Sadly, if history is any indicator, it won't be long before "delayed" is the next insult to hurl at people.

I do not think "delayed" will have the same outcome as "retard". It just does not have the staying power.

If the outrage culture could kindly fuck off from motor sports, that’d be absolutely super 👍

I have a close neighbor with a special needs child and my neighborhood is like a speakerbox the way the sound carries. You can hear conversations a long ways. I have kids intern here and they all say it and I have to tell them to please not say that.
On another note, why do words hurt so much more now than any other generation ever, and why does everyone need to know everyone else's status, identity, religion, belief? How did we de evolve into such weakness? Why do I have to not only except you quietly but I am now required to fully announce my position on your status and I must overly accept you on a loudspeaker or else. Its because this new generation has never struggled and the first ever to walk downhill both ways to school so everything is contrived. The biggest issue in life today if not for the virus is they didn't make enough ps5's. First world problems created the real word you should worry about... majority of humans are now PANSIES. If you were given the slightest amount of common sense this is the easiest time to thrive in history and there is no other place where you can do what ever you dream with any opportunity at your fingertips. Society is projecting and trying to overly stand up to words but its just trying to hide their own failures by overly defending others hoping it hides their own guilt. Just be kind and don't let trivial words or opinions sway you. Also the testing made kids all think they are geniuses. When I was a kid all the answers were close to the right one so it was difficult. Now no one can pass these same tests we took so in order to get the GPA for funding they either took all the hard questions out or they look like 2+2=
a. pineapple
b. a boat
c. 4
d. ice-cream
e. a puppy
and now everyone thinks they are so "educated". One kid on here says yea right man we invented computers. wtf
every kid was learning coding in 1985 in middleschool. You need your offended muscle worked out more because its weak. Boohoo some random person doesn't like me or my type so how can I go on in 2020? Holy shit its pathetic and evolving in reverse but the plan is working and the whole idea is to create kings and peasants. Its the easiest to control and the easiest to manipulate into conflicting with each other and keep down. Don't fall for it and just be kind, its not hard.

I have a co-worker who also hates hearing that word, his youngest daughter is mentally challenged (she is my age, 31).

I think if you had a child with special needs you may think differently about the use of the word. I understand that this does not affect probably 97%+ of the population, but it can be sensitive to those who have a loved on in the 3%.

I don't think Ms. Deegan should get in big trouble for this, but I think it should be used as a learning lesson. I used to use the word quite regularly and after finding out it really bothers my co-worker I do try to remember that. Yes, I realize we are becoming too sensitive as a country, BUT I think certain words or phrases can be offensive. The golden rule doesn't fail here..do onto others as you would have them do unto you.

How many racing kids does Deegan have?

These offended cultured people don’t really care about the people, they just enjoy their indignation and the feeling they get from pointing fingers.

It's sad that kindness and being considerate of others is so looked down upon.

Are the people pointing fingers really that considerate? I don’t know this girl, but I would say it’s something that probably doesn’t warrant the “media” attention it’s getting.

That is so light compared to the normal banter on iRacing. I've heard death threats, strings of 4 letter words, the N word dropped repeatedly like it's part of normal conversation between rednecks. But if you're even slightly kind of someone you are held to a nearly impossible standard of maturity.

I don't know her history. Is this normal for her, or is it a one-off thing.

I do wish everyone would take incidents like this as a learning opportunity. I have no problem with people pointing out to her that such language is hurtful to some people, and explain exactly why. And then she would be educated, and could make more effort to not repeat it in the future. But some people want to crucify her, and others want to defend her "right" to say whatever she wants, no matter who it hurts. And those same people will switch sides when a different person says something.

Being kind to others costs us nothing. Being considerate to others costs us nothing. Except maybe the chance to impress other people who choose to be unkind and inconsiderate. I'm imperfect, and I don't always choose kindness, but I make an effort to do so, and because of that, I do so more often. I'm willing to give people benefit of the doubt when they don't. But if they repeatedly do so, or actively enjoy being unkind, the benefit of doubt is gone.

I agree this is an asinine thing to make a story of. I also think, given her upbringing, she should know better. She’ll learn from it, become more polished and hopefully that’s all. Social media is a helluva drug

Outrage culture tends to go too far in many ways, but avoiding saying "the R word" is not one of them. Is it really that hard to avoid saying it? Is it such an infringement on your freedom? If kids with developmental disabilities have the sense to feel their self-worth devalued, then just suck it up and do the right thing. I'm sure they have a hard enough time already.

This same logic is how things keep progressing though. It never stops. I agree it is in poor taste, but making multiple news stories about it and giving her hell over it, is just too far.

It isn’t just this word it’s everything anymore. Freedom is a distant memory for us anymore.

Hailey Deegan being criticized for using slurs makes freedom a distant memory. Only on vital.

FLmxr nailed it. I have a special needs nephew and my wife drives a short bus so we’re no stranger to how people with special needs kids feel about the word retard. ( Sorry I’m not saying “the R” word ) While most of the population won’t care about the word, people with a connection to special needs kids hate it. Having said that I’m not sure when the phrase “Sticks and stones may break my bones but words will never hurt me” faded out of use, but maybe it’s ready for a comeback.
