If i could think of one, it would probably be a KTM with a tom zont engine and finely tuned a-kit suspension.

Rick Ryan's 87 CR250r.. It was basically stock.

Owned & raced an 87, those 86 & 87 CR250's were ahead of their time..
Mitch Payton did the cylinder and head on that bike.... Arnold Plant built the motor and all Ryan's and Matson's motors that year. He jetted it and matched the cases plus did some work on the crank and the bottom end....

That exact 250 was purchased after the season by a friends dad. It was a very smooth motor that ran very clean....

Hands down to the 1981Maico 490 sold to hundreds of privateers campaigning from Maine to California and the Importer in RSA and Rhodesia sold hundreds with Super results.

It doesnt matter if they were stock or not....

That CRF450 of Chads back in 2011 was pure privateer and was beating a lot of factory machines

I think you're talking about his 2013 bike ? I was at the Oakland SX race that yr. & remember him doing an interview. He said the bike was basically a production bike with some add-ons. He got a couple of top 5-6 finishes that year going off memory.

You could see that Short struggled a bit out there with a Honda CRF450 that had new suspension components (the KYB production all-air fork as opposed to a Showa works fork). Otherwise, the bike had a high compression piston, a clutch basket, an FMF exhaust, some clamps, a linkage and that's about it. It was a huge change, and Short, who has been referred to as nearly OCD by many, change doesn’t always go over well. He qualified only twentieth fastest—a strange sight indeed. The odds were against the #29 to do much of anything with not much time on a strange bike on a new team.

So hard to define privateer. Is Bullfrog Spas Motoconcepts privateer? They kill it. Other than that seemed like 22s Kawi was one of the best I've ever seen. And I'm really not a fan of his but he just seemed to go wherever he wanted to. Not sure how much factory help he had and I'm sure pro Circuitwas helping. Other than 11/10 mods bikes with Durham on it did amazing things.

11-18-89 on my birthday, I bought 1, with NSR port job and 18# on it. This was my 1st Mx bike, riode 13 times. I broke the shock blitzing whoops, installed a WP shock. Then singed up for 125 expert class, because it was 8 laps. Tangled up in 1st turn, kept on passing riders. Got the lead and pulled away. Cross rutted a double with 1 corner to the finish. Did a 1/2 front flip landed upside down wide open. I couldn’t move my legs for a minute. Yahmaha dealer offered a free 91 yz125, I declined the offer. I stacked 2 base gaskets, sometimes 3. 87 cr125 was fast, handled great too. Kid b4 me did hill climbs on it.

I remember coopers 87 Cr 125 rides and great stories. I added a DG pipe also, did top end every 10 hrs stock Honda piston. Mid range came on early, then just shift as fast as you can, strong and wide mid, top end reved out.
