Ryno and other trainers, are you teaching etiquette?

I thought about it... I have been in pit fights before and nothing good comes out in the end. Also he was 17, if he was 18 his mom might have had to watch him take a beat down. That's Moto!

Right there with ya Cooksey, just about 8 years your elder. Raced "A" from '86-early 90's. I'd have probably rode nice and easy until he came around again, then at the end of the next straight he'd have found out what a former A rider can still do even though he now weighs in around 195-205#. That's a lot of momentum coming in hot for a panic brake block pass. Hannah style.

Totally agree. There is one guy who has done it to me at three different tracks. If I even see that white Yamaha again I'm pulling a Barcia on him. My problem is that C class seems to be made up of true C class riders like my self and a bunch of A class riders that want to be up front. Most go by me effortlessly

I'm a 27 year old track day only rider. I can run with the top B guys for a few laps, and I have the same problem as you.

Guys see my number, and remember who I was 10 years ago and want to bang bars. The big difference is in that they have Xbox and a one hitter to look forward to on Monday, while I'm trying to climb the corporate ladder in a Fortune 300 company.

It's like the 40 year old guy who talks about how great he was in High school football..... that's all he has in life.

High intensity training is great.... If you own your own track and just ride with your friends... But at an open practice day with riders of all skill levels, it isn't going to end well....

Ive never understood...is the Vet class for 30+ or is it for fast guys that don't want to race with teens/early 20's?

I'm in the same boat. Haven't raced competively in 4 years. But when I show up for a practice day these young bucks see me and remember me from 4 years ago and try to bang bars with me. Cutting the track to drop in behind me and etc. it's always like cmon dude I'm just trying to finish my 4 lapper without having a stroke so I can crush some pbr tall boys at the end of the day without having some hormone enraged 17 year old try to take me out to boost his ego.

I did have an issue with a kid and his dad last year. Kid dropped in behind me and put a real aggressive pass on me. I wicked it up and drove it back in on him a few corners later. Needless to say his father visited my pit asking what the pass I put on his kid was all about

I would get this on the back of chest pro or maybe on all the number plates. It reduces the possibility of conflict.

I am a 41 year old former pro or "A" level rider. I love riding my dirt bike, at this point in my life I cruise at a safe speed and leave my ego back at the truck. I don't take any unnecessary risks, I have a family to provide for and getting injured could end my riding days.

I don't race, no desire to race. I ride track days, nothing relieves stress like a 30 min Moto but I am getting frustrated with kids who train with unqualified trainers and think track days are a chance to practice block passing on "C" riders and Vet riders. After getting stuffed by some 17 year old kid I rode up to him after finishing my 30 min Moto. I was pretty heated, but I tried to speak as rationally as possible. I complimented him on his style, told him he was really fast but asked him if he could stop riding like an asshole? I explained that I had no desire to race him and asked he just leave me alone(I always hold my line and let them ride around me with no challenge). Then his mom shouted "that's Moto, deal with it"... I didn't really have a comeback as I realized how stupid she was(she was proud of her son for riding dirty against a Vet rider who was trying to safely let the kid pass prior to getting stuffed).

After cooling down, everyone had retreated to the pits during a water break, I wanted to know this kids story. We talked, I asked him about his life. He failed to qualify for LL this year in the "B" class(due to an injury he is plenty fast enough). He trains with Ryno in CA. He told me Ryno teaches him high intensity training and that is all he was doing. At this point I asked him if it was his goal to have sponsors and ride pro, he replied "yes ". I asked a rhetorical question about how these sponsors make money and who are their customers? Vet riders, "C" riders, beginners and weekend warriors who pay top dollar for their products. The kid seemed to understand, his mom was just scowling at me...

I hope Ryno and these other "trainers" teach these kids track etiquette along with riding techniques. I might sound like "get off my lawn guy", but while Motocross is insanely fun it is also extremely dangerous. No need to add risk on a practice day to a guy who doesn't even race.
Chris,

Nice post! I can't tell you how many times myself and others at the track talk about this same issue! We have even left a track early or not returned to a track because of this type of riding. Mostly because we have a VET class or 35+ practice class yet the tracks around here allow kids to ride in that same class? It makes no sense to have a vet class and let kids in it!

To your point, this is not just about trainers though. It is about the sport, parents, coaches, and tracks! Tracks need to be more pro active in this sport. They should have rules, instructions, or help the new riders learn how to hold their line and how to ride safely. I always thought it is odd we have 100 new videos posted everyday about motocross yet no one in the sport makes a safety video, flagging video, or rider safety video.

Had a dipshit who was a real dick on race day one time. Local race mind you. Doesn't mean shit. In practice he ran me off the track. I let it go. We happened to get staggered together college boy and 25+. So he goes down and I go around him. And then for the next half a lap he continues to panic rev and scream at me to get out of the way. Eff him and his 17 year old punk ass. I'm racing my class I ain't moving over for you because you went down in your moto. He finally gets around me. I went to his truck after the race because I was pissed at how he acted. His mom was same type you described. And then one of his 19 year old groupies decided to get in my face and push me and continue to tell me how I held him up. I just laughed it off and left. They don't get it. They'll be assholes until they grow up a little. I'm sure he will be real nice guy at 30. Just not at 17.
Shit, once you put hands on me, no rules now. Fair game.

In little leage I hit two home runs in a championship game

I scored a goal once in soccer from the 50 yard line - all air, just under the top of the goal

^^^^ true stories bro

Only way these kids (or parents) will change is when they wake up the next am w/ a black eye or two
- some will never get it until then

Respect / maturity needs to be learned sometimes the hard way

All the Dumb M''''therfuckers is why I avoid the tracks. Off road and desert was little quieter. Was... Doesn't matter where you go and ride you going to run into stupid MX people who make everyone look bad. I keep my dirtbike hobby on the DL from everyday people. Makes things lot easier.

"What a drag it is getting old / Kids are different today" - mick jagger

Or the more relatable quote Like - LLoyd Christmas's famous words "You know, the elderly, although slow, and dangerous behind the wheel, can still serve a purpose. Don’t you go dying on me now."

the old in mx, all slow and dangerous n shit on modren mx tracks should hold their lines and do corners faster and In turn stay safer.

seen so many broken ankles on old poor pylons thinking they had some kind of right to be on the track and worse! taking the corners too slow! like traffic laws apply or something? where as the young love old mid-corner pylons - because they are fun to bounce off , I get it

Just so happened that, that pylon, was my buddy jay last week , luckily the little 17 year old fucker hit & broke jays left ankle mid corner, so he could still drive his truck home, but he still can't work, So not that lucky I guess? ... but the 17 year old phenomenon that broke his ankle was sorry btw (really sincerely sorry)

but in his defence, in this one aspect, he was just riding at track speed aka landing in the corners aka modren riding - halfway exiting the corner the next jump has already started!
It's big disconnect between how it plays out on the track between the modren young and modren old riders! The old rider treats the jump exiting the corner as a roller! not a jump! so the corners are dangerous places for the elderly geriatric riders to be!

And a good lesson is ; if you are slow (& old) on an mx track? you better have amazing track awareness or get the fuck off - if you get injured it's no ones fault but your own - if you see the 17 year old coming around again who whipped it within 6 inches of your head last lap? hold your line or pull off - you are too old - sports passed you by - feel free to pull back on in safe manner when safe to do so and you will 100% get respect for being a former fast dude! They key is to know your place! Know your limit , stay with in it!

Was just thinking, same could be said on the flip side of things. If it's a practice day and you reel someone in pretty quickly and are a few clicks faster than. Why do they have to fight tooth and nail to hold you off ? I had a guy do this recently, so then i ran in it on him and took his line away and gapped out instantly. After the moto he then comes over crying how I stole his line. I told him, are we racing ? No. Well then why the fuck are your trying to hold me back from passing you and making it dangerous for both of us ? Total silence.

I'm 48 and ain't got no time for dat shit ! Well said Slip !

For the record I always hold my line. My speed is still pretty good, this kid came in on me like Tomac was on his ass and there was only 1/2 a lap left to decide the championship. If he had apologized and said he misjudged his speed, no problem, but he and his mom acted like I had no right even sharing the track with this phenom. Telling me "that is Moto" is where I have a problem. I started this post to see if trainers(and I use that term loosely) teach their students about respect for other riders on open practice days or if they don't care how they treat the general public. Would Ryno be proud or embarrassed that his student acted this way?

All the time, that and riders running you off the track when one is passing on the outside. For goodness sakes if you are getting passed on the outside, the passer is doing you a favor by passing you safe. They could just pass aggressively on the inside, so let them go. 50+ class riders are the worst
