And anyone in here who thinks Hannah wouldn't be fast now is an idiot. Also, people who think he couldn't jump are equally out of touch. He got old, and began to dislike jumping. But when he was younger he wasn't afraid to jump anything. I raced in a national at Broome Tioga that Bob was also in. He was old at the time and I was young. My speed would never compare, so don't think I'm going there. But, there was this huge table top with a squared off back side and ruts up the face. I think I got a better start than him, but I hadn't jumped that jump yet and I wasn't about to start. Bob floated over my head, downsided it and was gone.
There is no answer for the ignorance of youth but time.
I will say that Bob is very connected to the sport today and knows a lot more about whats going on than some give him credit for. He is very tight with Keith McCarty and many others at Yamaha so I'm not sure how much more connected you could really get other than being currently working with the factory team.
The other thing is to read or hear what Bob says about anything you really need to know the guy. He loves to bust balls and get people riled up. That is one thing that made him so bad ass. Think about it, the guy went around talking shit on everyone and then backed it up. Nothing pisses people off more than a guy spouting off about you and then not being able to shut him up. That was and still is Bob Hannah. Other than Kenny Roberts, I have never seen anyone like the guy.

The old guard had to deal with shitty tracks, with equally shitty suspension.
Today, we have freeway runs up to the big jumps, planned whoop sections, and Cadillac suspension.
Surely the lap times for those old farts would have been faster if they could have gotten the old Allis -Chalmers fired up to make some freeway runs and some 89mm FWB forks and a BBC rear shock for those clunkers they used to ride.
Those old dudes sucked.
I asked a really fast dude that I rode with one day in the woods where he gets the fortitude to haul ass that fast through trees and foreign terrain. He told me " I cannot internally accept losing, and I'm not afraid to get hurt trying to win"....... I always assummed I thought that way too, but reality proved to me otherwise.....That being said, in my opinion, put RJ or Hannah in their prime on todays bikes and they'd be champs. They had what it takes for sure.
In 30 years this generation will have to stand up for RC"s speed because the new kids will only know what they've seen with their own eyes.....(which ain't much)
Just look at Jeremy Martin. He's an incredible MX rider, but has yet to set the world on fire indoors.
I'm not saying Hannah wasn't great I'm not saying Hannah wouldn't win now but my opinion is if he was racing now he may soon learn that the methods of old don't quite cut it these days.. It's also my opinion he should not talk shit on the current riders as if he knows everything but I know that's not how Bob Hannah works which makes me not much of a fan of his
Some of you who think what he said was cool though , go eat a big one. It wasn't cool at all and uncalled for. I will also guarantee that all the newer generation riders would disagree with it as well. But so be it.
My point is that the riding style now is very different to what it was then, and while we can assume that Hannah would do very well in modern racing (assuming he learned that style), we can't prove it.
Pit Row
You got to give it to Hannah though, he can tell it straight, honest, uncensored, and be full of shit at the same time. And at the end of the day he's probably got it about right.
I remember back in the 90s watching Steve Lamson on a 125 at Unadilla. It was one of my first nationals I had been to since I started racing and I was completely blown away by the speed these guys were carrying on 125s in person. A few years later I got to race the AM day at Dilla and had even more respect for the Pros! It was like a warzone of holes and bumps out there. So much respect for those guys and the things they did on bikes that were harder to ride and under powered compared to modern 4 strokes.
I still think of Lammy in the back section of Dilla. Standing the whole way through a rutted sloppy straight just pinned and floating. Still amazes me.
I wish I had your set of problems in life
