That neighborhood/location in Newport Beach is somewhere I wouldn’t be worried if I had left all the doors to my house unlocked accidentally. Damn near perfect weather year around and right next to the beach. I miss the lifestyle I had in Orange County. Definitely don’t miss the cost of living though.
I lived in the John Wayne flight path for most of my life. It really wasn’t too bad, but that’s just me. I know on take offs, pilots cut the power on engines a bit to produce less noise as well.

And then sell it just before the remodel is completed for a $15m loss! Everyone loves a good tax break.
So if RV gave the house to you free and clear, you would still have a $5600 a month tax bill. And if you know CA, property tax can only increase a small percentage a year and his is based on the purchase price of $6m a few years ago. If your purchase price is $12m, expect that $5600 to be more like $10k plus a month.
I would have to win two lotteries back to back, but that place is my dream. I don't want to live right on the beach as your streets are always busy with tourists 365 in So. California. Same with those cool houses hanging off the cliffs on the west side of PCH, always traffic and noise. I've always loved Nellie Gail Ranch in Laguna Hills. 10 min. from Salt Creek, quiet if your in the area farthest from the 5, 1 ac lots and they let you turn your old stables into workshops (nice pole barns for the mid westerners) or guest houses now. Still will be close to $5m and not close to any tracks, but I love that development.
I am always baffled by the sheer amount of money on the California coast and often wonder what do these people do for a living to live this way as it seems no one is ever “at work”. Being a light blue collar guy having to report to work every day, I know of people just being out and about every day. I hear, Dr’s, lawyers, trust fund babies, old money, etc, etc. but dam. House for house 5 miles inland and hundreds of miles North and South. What the eff are they doing/have done to generate this kind of wealth? I’ve done fairly well for where I’m originally from but in comparison I certainly can’t live that exact lifestyle on Ca. coastal soil. My wife and I call the difference the “Country Club Fee” as we feel that Ca. as a whole is the Country Club and that comes at a cost. Doesn’t stop me from wondering though…

RV worked his ass off for what he has so he’s entitled to spend it on anything he wants. The people living on the streets are free to go work for a living and buy anything they choose without anyone questioning their choices. I live in a very modest home and there is nothing wrong with someone line RV living in a beautiful estate. Has zero to do with homelessness
hahah yeah. My old boss lived in a condo in Malibu. He used to complain to me that every day when he left for work there were a ton of people sitting by the pool. And when he got home they were sitting by the pool. He didn't understand how these people could afford to live there without ever leaving.

I always think about this as well. My wife and I both went through college and have good jobs. We work hard and long hours and we can barely afford to live in a townhome in Oregon on combined incomes. It's insane. Meanwhile, how are people living like kings and it seems like they barely work? Money pass down?
You get sick of all the attacks on CA from the red hats. Its extremely common here in TX.
Being born and raised in Iowa, my family including cousins mostly moved to other states when out of high school or college. One of my cousins went to CA. Back in the 80's he first moved to Upland, then Yorba Linda and finally Elk Grove, CA south of Sacramento where he started and ran a very successful business. At 57 yrs old he sold that business for just under 8 figures $. He and his wife were able to retire at 57, own a home in Nashville, TN outright, and a home on the north side of Port Townsend, WA overlooking the Straight of Juan de Fuca. They travel the world, and live a great life.
The rest of us are scattered in midwest and upper midwest states with me living in TX. We are all still working and while we're all doing well, none of us have made the $$bank he did. So my point to this is, yes CA is an expensive state to live in for the most part, and you can have success in lower cost states as well, but of the relatives I've had in CA and others I know living there, most achieve a high level of success. Maybe the higher cost and competitive nature that drives them more? I don't know?, but being from, or living in Cali is not a disadvantage, and most of us would trade our shitty weather to live there.

Some are fortunate to have "generational wealth" and with some smarts passes down and down and down.
Wealthy people spend $50k or more per year per child on just an elementary school. Even more as they move to middle and high schools. Wealthy people groom their kids to be wealthy and continue to thrive in any economy. Their whole perspective on living, expectations is different from "common folk"
I grew up in N.G.Ranch … surfed Creek almost every day back in the late 80’ early 90’s…i miss the climate and surfing, but not the rest of it. Love visiting my family that’s still their but always happy to go home to peace and quiet.
Lots of people in tech are making millions per year barely working. It’s nuts. Or people who made a ton of money early and are retired in their 30s. I know some people in private equity who were able to do that

RV does not live in an optimal place to commute east every day. The traffic on the 55 and 91 is absolutely mind-numbingly brutal.
I went and looked at the historical images on Google earth and the pool was there when RV bought it, the entire pool. Looks like he redid the landscaping, and maybe built that trophy room over the garage. This is a screen shot from 2018
