Meanwhile seems like bike jump parks are popping up all over there.  I follow Steve Cabalero and he’s always hitting cool stuff.

Sorry to my California moto-brothers that this is happening.  The sport seems to be doing well in my neck of the woods (Illinois).  i think a really good AMA District president makes a huge difference.  In Illinois we kind of leaned into the District 17 and it has been good.  I know the AMA isn't the answer for all the states but again....a good AMA district can make a difference.

Yes Gerhard Ward is great.

We also live in the epitome of freedom, we can go home, start our dirtbike and wheelie down the road with no cop involvement.

We can spit on the sidewak too.

What became of Castiac and Hopetown?

Used to hear about those tracks.

Castaic- Nothing. The water tank is still there with a big handlebar company sticker still on it and some of that area was used for Race Around the Lake which was a lot of fun, but it’s back to flat ground again. Not sure RATL will ever be back, so the area just gets used for mud runs and bike races every so often.

I'm originally from IL & my brother & most my friends still race & ride in Illinois. I can say with 100% certainty that moto is doing better in California than Illinois.

Ski resorts in North America are killing skiing for average people. They’re all owned by one of two companies and fees are through the roof. Enough rich people to pay.

Compare with European resorts. Many are run by the townships and skiing is much easier for common people to enjoy.

They likely don’t have the ridiculous “sue everyone everytime” culture that the US does either though. Is the US the only place with highways littered with lawyer billboards?

Edited to add I totally get track owners charging more in a lot of cases. Running a track is tons of effort only to get people complaining about everything as a reward.

"Is the US the only place with highways littered with lawyer billboards?"

Yes, and one of the few places that lawyers advertise on TV.

I think they spend their time and money on Harley guys and their bullshit.

I am forced to be an AMA member and as a result, I get their magazine every month, and you can look through the issues and see that Motocross is the red-headed step child.

Street stuff gets 90 percent of the page space every month.  The AMA just seems to tolerate moto, I doubt if they would care back in Mid Ohio if all So Cal Tracks went away.

I would love any AMA guy who reads this to chime in and prove me wrong, but they cant, because they don't do shit for  us out here other than take our fees.

I agree 1000% would be nice e to see an organization like the AMA for dirt bikes and dirt bikes only

A lot of the TX tracks are built on land not suitable for development - flood plains - power line easements etc… prob why they have lasted the test of time…

Really? I’d think mammoth gets quite a few but maybe I’m wrong & LTM gets more. Kind of a shitty way to come at this too because I can guarantee an NGPC gets more entries. Most people out here ride moto & race off road. Also should we talk about how LTM runs 2nd motos 3 lap motos at a 1:50 lap time at these record breaking attendance races??????

I was more referring to the “moto scene” as a whole, the total number of people who ride dirt bikes in a given week. Cali as a whole trumps Lincoln trail bad bad.

How many days was Lincoln Trail open in the last month? GH was open 16-17x. Pala 20x.

...I can't even go to any SoCal track on a Saturday or Sunday, as they are packed to the gills with riders.

I ride during the week, and every So Cal track I ride at still gets a couple hundred riders even on a Monday or Tuesday -  Moto is FAR from dead in Southern California.

In most cases we have noise complaints, mismanagement, and insurance problems that close these tracks and prevent new ones from opening.

So I have a question - Ski resorts have lots of injuries and a few deadly ski accidents each season, and are still able to operate with insurance.  Why is the ski Industry not losing their resorts and slopes?  I would guess that they have money and legal power behind them to help keep these resorts open.

Dirt bike riders and potential track owners are dumb and cheap, and most likely would not be willing to pay what it takes to form an organization to protect their interests.

What about the AMA you say?   well IMO the AMA is a bunch of self-serving dumb asses who don't really care about California motocross enough to form a track defense team or insurance fund to try and prevent these track closures.

one more thing. -  all you guys who complain about a 30 dollar track fee need to see the prices they charge for green fees or lift tickets.    Tracks are not raking in the money - Perris Raceway had to get a Go Fund Me page up to repair a fucking generator, as their water and diesel bills are 12 grand a month each.

Bought a lift ticket recently? $250 a day per skier. That buys a lot of lawyers.

I've definitely been wondering about the ski resort paradigm in contrast to moto tracks. From what I understand, real estate sales / development is what really drives ski resorts - I wonder if that gives them deeper pockets to fight off lawsuits.

Ski resorts to moto tracks = really big apples to orange seeds (barely). Mammoth Mountain (admittedly one of the ten largest ski resorts in the US) single day - adult ski passes cost 179.00 mid week and 219.00 weekends. I roamed through a bunch of sites and could not get an average of skiers on the mountain, but the ski lift capacity is able to move 53,330 skiers PER HOUR. You do the math. Kirkwood Ski Resort (a small, somewhat out of the way resort) (where I usually ski) the mid week lift ticket price is $143.00. (I buy season passes). Kirkwood can move 16,??? something. And most ski resorts are corporate now a days. Point is, $$$, for lawyers and insurance. Are you willing to pay $150.00 a day to ride a moto track?

Yup, seems to me like these resorts charge enough for lift tickets that they can afford good insurance. I was in South Lake Tahoe for a couple of days in July of '23, and Heavenly wanted $85 to ride to the top of the mountain just to see the view during the off season. During the season, I think it's $200-something.

99,2000 winter I skied 48 consecutive days a few times I did day & night skiing with the same ski pass.  East side of Green Bay 3 bucks for rope tow  hill pass ticket.  5 minute drive to the hill.  Speaking of hills most of these ski hills r closed. I know of 1 that’s for sale the ski lift needs expensive repairs so you,d get it cheap.  Others could be forsale. Start the only ski hill Mx race series in the world. IMG 1808

yeah it's not dead lol.

seems like it is not good as they hayday 15 years ago but it does not seem like anywhere is. My dad, brother, friends & myself all agree Illinois is in the same boat. not as many races, not as many tracks & not as many racers as 2007-2008.

i'm pretty certain i know who you are & you were def racing Illinois D 17 in 2007-2008, same with Noones. The kid ripped but you guys think the current state of tracks, amount of riders & races to attend is better than 2007-2008?

Yeah LTM is great they're doing awesome but how about south fork, crossroads? Southern Illinois used to have 3 tracks race all the time with great turnouts now it's down to LTM. Not sure if SF is trying to make a comeback but that would be cool to see.

Lmao i lose it when people post dumb shit.

go sit at Glen Helen on a Thursday from 8 am to dark & report back to me that moto is dead. Glen Helen on 1 thursday gets more riders coming through than 3-4 days (maybe even more) at other tracks I’ve been to in other states.

Go to pala on a Monday or Tuesday it’s packed.

Probably true. one of the more popular tracks here and most people seem to like it. It was in the running to host a southeast national a few years back. Monster Mountain in Alabama (45 minutes from me) about 3 weeks ago we went and there might have been 25 bikes total there. Granted it was the beginning of Mini o's but i have been on similar days with similar turnouts.  It's $30 a day here and the weather is almost always rideable!

Hook line and sinker, every time. Just another bullshit video put out there for views.  A track shut down, it's a hot topic, so now "it's dead".  Like many said, go to a track out here (even during the week) and you'll get your actual answer on if the scene is dead.

Saddleback land is still vacant and from what I’m told the houses haven’t moved any closer from when it shutdown. Carlsbad as mentioned above is partially covered by a business park with mostly empty suites.

I find it interesting that dirt bike riders can chat for hours about the pros and cons of certain tires, bars, riding gear, two stroke/four stroke, gas/electric and racing history but have so little interest to secure riding areas. This is an existential threat to our sport. This will kill our sport. And no magazine, podcaster, race organization, manufacturers, riding organization, riding group does much of shit about it. For the cost of one Sexton/Lawrence/Tomac any of those manufacturers could sponsor many riding parks or back legislation to secure riding areas. Any of these podcasters could use their forum as a weekly reminder to ask riders to get involved. The AMA, well it's the AMA and with them involved dirt bike riding will go the way of American road racing and AFT, what a flaccid bunch of bottom feeders. Ultimately it is down to us, I tried for a while, it was one of the most frustrating and humbling experiences in my life.

Very concerning on the moto scene in So Cal.

I thought it was odd how he basically brushed over Cahuilla MX, as "some track in Anza". Sure I speak for a lot of people, that Cahuilla is one of SoCal moto's favorite spots. Just my gripe, otherwise a decent video.

Just got home from Perris on a Saturday - 200 plus riders they said, not including the Stacyc "wacky Racers" kids, who have their own track.

Southern CA still has a MASSIVE track attendance, you can ride every day of the week here if you want - In addition, most facilities have a main, vet and kid's track on site, some like Fox have a mini track and AMA pro SX track as as well.

Glen Helen - open Tue, Thur.  Sat, Sun - 5 tracks on property

Perris Raceway - 3 tracks on site - Sat Sun, Tuesday (minis) Wed nite all tracks.

Cahuilla Creek Motocross - Sat, Sun, Wed - 3 tracks on site, off-road loop.

Fox Raceway - Fri, Sat. Sun, Mon, Tues. - National Track, Vet track, Kids Track, Mini Track, AMA supercross track for Pros only.

Barona Raceway - Sat Sun (seasonal)

It sure does suck that we lost Elsinore Motocross and LACR in the span of one month, as now it is more crowded on weekends at the other tracks. Elsinore especially was a large facility.

The whole point to my post is that motocross in this state is huge, and the Industry, manufacturers and the AMA need to stop fucking around and work together to keep tracks open. Maybe a track ownership group would be stronger than these tracks going it alone?

You nailed it...  moto is down everywhere compared to years past, not just one state.

See Spoonguy gets it.

I thought it was odd how he basically brushed over Cahuilla MX, as "some track in Anza". Sure I speak for a lot of people, that Cahuilla is one of SoCal moto's favorite spots. Just my gripe, otherwise a decent video.

Cahuilla is a favorite of mine also.
