Well last year when Deegan didn't go Bobby Regan himself said it wasn't about the money. I find it hard to believe if Tomac was selected that the would refuse to go.
I don't disagree with you about trying to find a better way to finance the MXoN effort. However when you try to take as objective a look as possible at last year, this year and all the circumstances, the explanation that best fits everything we know is that Deegan doesn't want to race MXoN unless he thinks he is on a winning team; in this case believing that Tomac was the best choice for the other 450 spot. I don't doubt the medical issue and given the circumstances I can understand foregoing MXoN but it's been known about for a long time, certainly well before MXoN considerations. Deegan really should have excused himself from selection on that basis and everyone would be much happier.
Now that is clearly his prerogative, but coming from the guy who is clearly your best 250 rider that stance puts a few key people in an awkward situation. It's disrespectful to AP (or whichever other 450 rider might be in contention for a spot). The AMA in their attempt to select the best team would feel pressured to some degree to give Eli an overly generous opportunity to prove himself. Eli certainly might feel that if he was selected it was largely due to ensuring that Deegan would also go.
All in all though it appears from the outside as a shit show.
I would say Sexton has more to lose than anybody. Perspective is everything.
