That is likely true, but going to a world cup level would like a local B rider showing up at A1.....not going to end well.  The level is insane.  I am sure he could be very competitive in age group classes at a national level, but nowhere near world cup.

Yeah I heard him say that on the show, and others in this thread are clueless to what a World Cup event level is like. The level is insane but even if he has close to the fitness needed the bike handling skills of the XC guys is pretty wild these days the courses have gotten much more difficult.

I went to the last 3 world cups at Snowshoe I went for the DH racing not the XC haha.

I agree to a point but he’s closer to being a world class runner than the guys winning marathons are to being world class MXers. Especially impressive for his stubby little body. The work his body is doing for every stride compared to a typical ultra runner is pretty significant.

I don't think running fans are claiming that world class runners could be world class motocross riders.

There were some real kooks on that thread, but I do agree with the sentiment that pro moto guys are not "world class endurance" athletes. Yes, they are a lot fitter than the average Joe but they honestly wouldn't hold a candle to world class cyclists or runners.

If anything, J-Mart's performance should confirm that fact. I think he's regarded as one of the fittest guys in our sport and his half marathon time is 15 minutes over what would be considered a world class half marathon time. That's like someone turning up to a moto race and being 30 seconds a lap (on a 2 min track) off the pace.

Funnily enough, John Tomac believes the same thing... I remember an interview that Steve did with him where he admits that in the grand scheme of athletics, it's really not that hard to reach the level of fitness required to be competitive at pro moto. This is okay though, moto is a super gnarly sport and it's extremely hard on the body (and mind) in other ways.

I mean he could be, Enduro for instance. Look at where the latest Enduro World Cup winner Charlie Murray was at not that long ago. A skier who thought he would give racing a go. He’s now the top performing riding on the factory Specialized team. I remember starting at around the same time as him, insane to see where he is at now.

The thing that makes Moto so difficult is that it takes all of the attributes not just a couple. My buddy was a pro triathlon athlete. His cardio was off the charts, but if you mix in some weights his heart rate spikes. To me this is what makes Moto that much more badass. The cardio, muscle mass to take the forces properly, muscle endurance, balance, and decision making while the heart rate is elevated. Then add in the obvious changing track conditions etc. and that is what makes it the most physically demanding sport

Just for reference and comparison. Is anyone posting in here a true Mtn bike pro or professional runner?    Maybe they can chime in with some stats a SX/MX guy would have to score.   Still wonder when O ‘Mara, Ward and Bailey would do marathons, etc.  Seems they were gnarly for that time at a decent level.

As I said in my previous reply, a world class half marathon time is sub 60 minutes and J-Mart did it in 1h15, which is still incredibly impressive but it's not world class. It's the equivalent of turning up to an outdoor national and being 30-40 seconds a lap slower than the top guys.

The world record is 58:01, which is likely perfect conditions all around. Comparing J Mart's time at this particular event is hardly apples to apples. Regardless, this website puts him well into the "elite" level based on his time there:

Agree pretty much but to me it’s the speed of decision making in moto that is required and I think no matter how fast you are everybody does it subconsciously

The world record is 57:31. Sub 60 is world class. How much closer do you think J-Mart is getting to a sub 60 time in perfect conditions?

According to that website "Elite is faster than 95% of runners. An elite runner has dedicated over five years to become competitive at running."

That definition of elite is not world class.

Maybe in Enduro or even DH, but no chance in XC starting at 31.  I doubt he even wants to.  Hopefully he just has fun doing things he loves, I just thought it was comical how out of touch Zach O was on the subject.

Pretty sure his VO Max the strongest indicator or potential in endurance sports is up there with the best endurance athetes in the world, If he dedicated all his time to mountain biking he could race a World Cup no doubt.

so he’s 30 minutes off a world class marathon time? Well guess what don’t think his primary focus is on running. If it was he would be even better.

Remember when people were saying Tomac could train for a year and could be top 10 in World Cup DH? It was in a thread somewhere last year

TLDR

So is JMart coming back to race dirt bikes or the Tour De France?

According to his Strava he spends around 5 hours a week running on average. Guessing that is less than 50% of what an elite runner would do if training specifically for that event.

Sounds like he is signed up for the Leadville 100 this summer.

It will be cool to see where he lands in The Leadville. One of AMarts collaborators of Troll Training (John Wessling) finished 41st, 1hr 15 minutes behind winner Keegan Swenson and John trains for this kind of thing far more than Jeremy. Keegan is the real deal.

5 days before the opening round of the 2024 outdoors. And these teams or riders not even reporting if there are racing.

You clearly do not understand world cup XC racing.  It's not all about V02.  All of those guys have insane V02 of course.

Charlie didn't exactly come from no where though, as he has a long MTB racing background. He was one of the better Junior XC riders in the NZ way back (U15 national champ in 2010, and up there as an U17)... before skiing took priority for a period of time for him.

Added to his parents being legendary Adventure race/multisport athletes.
