He may want a clean break with his time at Honda.

Meh…He won the SX Championship and earned the right. I think a lot of us thought 23 worked for him…but, this is his career and his decision. There was a number 4 long before RC and there’s already been one after... RC is still a presence in the SX world and I think it’s a sign of respect when someone like Chase wants to run it. I felt the same way when Blake ran it and I remember RC telling me he told Blake something along the lines of…”Just make sure you make that number look good!” & RC said it with a smile.

If ANYONE was gonna have a number recognized as some sort of “SX Legacy”…? To me, that’s obviously MC and the number 2. Still, I feel that is number that has been well represented since MC’s day…who…btw…had the balls to ride a 125 in the 2 stroke race at Mammoth! Laughing

When RC was crushing it…he reminded me of the Grand National era back when…every now and then.  we’d have someone absolutely crush it in MX and SX…and they’d run that awesome Blue Plate with a Gold “1” on it…to that end…RC get’s “The Goat” recognition. Hell, I’d have RC and MC hand out the SMX plates…but, I digress.

He never won the Grand National Championship. Only Bailey did.

I don't remember the Grand National Championship but I do remember this.

Yeah Stanton's blue plate was for the Camel Supercross champion, not the old Wrangler GNC. Fun fact, only Honda has ever donned the blue plate: Bailey, Stanton, JMB, McGrath, and now Lawrence.

This is the train of thought I’ve been having. Yes Chase won the SX title, yes he fought tooth and nail with Tomac in ‘22 MX, yes he was the only one who seemed like he could hang with Jett at times in ‘23. But anytime I picture Chase in my minds eye, all I see is a Honda with 23 on the plate tucking the front…

This could easily be a me thing though. But I feel like he could be looking for a fresh start.

Pretty audacious of him to run Baggett's number.

I think of it as Bradshaw's number.

I never liked the idea of retiring numbers. It's been common in stick & ball sports (particularly baseball), and has actually created a problem for some of the older MLB franchises. For example, the Yankees have been around for so long and have had so many all-time greats (whose numbers have been retired) that most of their current roster have #50s and up on the back of their jerseys... always thought that was kind of ridiculous.

It's just a number; I think it's a sign of respect for a current player/rider to want to run the number of a legend. Also, there's only so many numbers to go around. I imagine a future of top championship contenders running three-digit numbers in the future if we actually start retiring them.

Shame he never ran it on the Honda. I think seeing the 4 back out there is great.

Heck yes get rid of that cursed #23, maybe his luck will change lol !!!

Interesting.  I was under the assumption that they could but not that it was mandatory. Guess I was wrong.

Me too, I thought they had the option to run the #1.

That used to be the case but they changed the rule some time in the last 10 years or so (not sure exactly when).

I think it changed in either 2009, 2010 or 2011.

James Stewart won the 2007 SX championship and used #7 in 2008.

Since Reed won in 2008 and used #1 in 2009, I'm going to guess that was the first year it was required.

The 2012 rulebook says defending champs have use #1.

But I don't have 2009-2011 rulebooks to see the exact year it changed.

I think its ridiculous that these guys get so territorial over a racing number.   If Chase wants to run the 4 he can.

Pretty sure from memory that Reed ran the #1 in ‘09 SX by choice.

He ran #1 also in 2010 outdoors so maybe it did change that year.

My memory isn’t trustworthy, but I think the rule had changed for 09 and Reed had to run the no.1. He chose not to run it in 05.

It's the Vitards that get territorial over it.

I knew I wasn't losing my mind.  I remember someone not running the #1 by choice and it was back in the RC and Stew days.

I find it weird that there are people go “I like when he based his image and brand around MJ” but are against the idea of him creating his own image and brand with a different number someone else has used before in this sport.

AP seems to be doing just fine amongst the fans with the number 7 or Webb with 2. Sometimes it’s okay to move on, especially considering someone else has already ran the #4 and has since retired since RC!

There was only 2 times and it was Bailey in 83 and 84 but I would say if any other one earned it well that would be Bayle in 91 for the 3 sweep SX,250,500 titles

And how do you who's number gets retired? Obviously RC. Chad Reed? Well if you're doing Reed you better retire Dungey. It will never end. Naw
