We live in a world that is so safe, so prosperous, so watered down, and so tame, that there are people who actually find that interview racist and offensive? SMH The amount of devolution occurring in our society never ceases to amazing me. The Hurricane's shear willpower alone makes him a legend. Can you imagine hearing about Eli running 12 miles and doing 2 45 minute motos EVERYDAY for 21 straight days to prep for MXoN? Yeah, me neither. It's too bad some of you are so caught up in your social programming that you miss the epicness of a guy like Bob. David Goggins explains this phenomenon often. Long live the Hurricane!!
If I was a betting man I'd say Eli does at least that and more. I could careless about his bragging and "racist" comments. I just don't like how he shits on all the riders from the late 90s and up. I know it's jealousy, but he wouldn't have lasted 5 minutes on a late 90s sx track....let alone the ones we see today.

The cRap music people are putting to their riding videos are FAR worse than anything Hannah has ever said.

You need to leave Bogle and B Mazzy out of this! They are lyrical geniuses God dammit.

Wow. The politically correct, everybody gets a trophy generation has been so conditioned to be Beta Males, that when they see a true Alpha in the wild, they instinctively try to tear him down. It’s sad.

Great interview. Love Hannah. He’s a true old school bad ass.

I have a Jewish friend that we call the Jew, and a Polish friend we call Pollock. I use the word retard in front of my daughter and she comes unglued, people are different, learn the room.

What I’m getting at, is that what’s offensive to some, might not to another and to sit around calling each other pussy gen xer and Boomers is mind numbing and a wasteful use of time. If you didn’t like the word Jap used cool, if you’re ok with it, cool. This is what’s wrong in our society’s today, both sides getting butt hurt over stupidity. Quit giving a fuck about how other think and view things differently and your life will be a lot happier.

Yes. This overuse of stereotyping categories like "boomer" and "millennial" is an intellectually lazy way of pretending to know more about others than you could possibly know.

In the year 2000, I dated a woman who was an HR Director for a large company. On our 2nd date, she had a problem because I called her "Chick" in the course of our conversation that night... I explained to her this is how I speak, I use the words Dude, Chick, etc. Nothing is meant to be degrading, it is just a part of my vernacular, and if she can't deal with that, we should probably end things right here and now. Long, story short. We have been together for 22 years, and married for 20 of those years. She learned that I was not saying things to piss her off, and I always made certain that i used the context of my words correctly.
For some reason everyone here chooses, not to accept each other regardless of reasons. If you do not fit into someone's paradigm here it is just assumed, you must be an asshole.

He just comes from a time when it was perfectly fine to say that. Said the world over I know older guys around his age from UK aus Europe that use it too. It's not used in a racist context.
Now my grandfather thst fought in ww2 definitely used it in a racist context.

My grandfather fought in the South Pacific. Different times. If you were a US Marine in Okinawa around May 1945 the term Jap might not seem so offensive.

Hannah is probably my all-time favorite rider.

I wish he would think about what he says, though. As the father-in-law of a wonderful young woman of Asian descent, I think that his words were unfortunate. It may not sound as harsh as some racial epithets, but it isn't exactly a sign of respect, either.
I understand. My wife is half Taiwanese.

Can we retire the word snowflake? It's awful. Just call them what they are, pussies

Same goes for:

"living rent free in your head".

All are SO played out.

Living rent free in your head could be the absolute worst.
I would add that "woke" should be retired because it's so overused these days.

I listened to the whole thing on a drive, thought it was good. I got to ride with Bob a lot in Bean canyon in the early 80s, and what you got was exactly how I remember him. The word Jap was probably the least offensive thing he said, I’d probably worry more about how he talked about women.

One thing you need to know, the motocross industry in his time referred to the Japanese guys as the japs, literally everyone said it. Plus, he’s what, 62? I fairly certain his dad would’ve used the term too, my dad did.

You have to know what you get with a guy like that, someone who literally cares about no one but himself, and will say whatever is on his mind, if you’re soft, it will offend you.
I was on my way to Bean Cyn for my first time and the guy I’m going with tells me we’re going to park by bobs dads house. We pull up next to this trailer almost looked abandoned with a bunch of used MC tires half buried making up a border and sure as shit wired to the wall of the open carport with rusty bailing wire there was a Pontiac SX trophy no bigger than a trophy from CMC or CRC. I’m sure the little MC guy on top was plastic. We rode to the spring going up super fun uphills and parts of the PCT to get there. Then found what had to be parts of bobs old track. Endless sand whoops and giant berms that could be ridden in endless combinations. If you rode with Bob at Bean you know I speak the truth. Did you ride there before or after he wired his trophy to the carport?

I’m only an hour and a half in, and so far the only thing I’ve heard that could remotely be considered racist is his track high jump story. And you’d need to really stretch to call that racist.

Anything after that? I may not get to finish it this week.
And he just said the black kids jumped higher and he quit. Actuallu complimentary to me. He kept saying "japs". I knew some wouldnt like it. Nothing he said i thought was racist but you cant please everyone

Time change, standards change, people rarely do. Would spinning a 17 year old trophy girl around to bury her muff in your face on the podium fly today? Should we crucify bob and the people involved NOW if they were all cool with in back in the day?

Unless I hear from the trophy chick that she wasn’t happy in that moment, I think it’s best that we all look back with a sense of wonder in the way the word was different then, and that the people who lived in those times had different default values…right wrong or indifferent.

For the term about Japanese, it was obviously used in a derogatory manner while our countries were at war, and that meaning still lingers, but I doubt very highly that bob had ill intent by using it in that manner.

With both of those points aside, he does have an off putting persona - which hopefully is all it is - a persona.

I suspect some of the opinions in this thread about his "racist" language are largely influenced by his political leanings also revealed in the interview.

I took my time listening to this episode....really wanted to pay attention...sometimes when I listen and miss stuff because i'm multi-tasking..

All that said.....man, that was definitely the best interview from WTS and there have been many great shows from Ping.

It's refreshing to see someone like Bob in todays candy-ass society. Can he be an ass...sure....is he arrogant...absolutely. None of that bothers me one bit. Despite his gruff demeanor, he seems pretty likeable to me.
It's always interesting to measure up one of your childhood heroes after you've become an adult.....Bob does not disappoint. I like him for the same reasons I idolized him as a kid

Thanks Ping, GL and of course Mr Hannah for making this happen.

According to Bob, she was 18 when that infamous moment happened. The previous year she was there and he asked her her age. She replied then that she was 17. A year later, he did some math.

ask him:

-about the change from Yamaha to Honda
-how was it to ride the HRC bike for the first time (details)
- had he not been injured, what did he think he could have accomplished (honestly) against the new crop of riders
- why didn’t you like Rick Johnson
- talk about your first discussions with Suzuki, and your initial riding session on the RM (details - track that day, that week, mentally what were you going through)
- were you surprised at your MXDN performance in 1987
- what was it like knowing you were this sudden revelation in the sport, becoming famous, all the attention, etc.

I could go on.

you don’t want guys telling stories. you want them telling the minute details they don’t know to tell until you ask them.

Hannah = Hall of Fame, multiple SX + MX championships....cant compare him or his desire to win to new generation clowns who cant pass w/o crashing or injuring the other rider. Hannah and Howerton clashes were classic with a championship on the line.

Yes, he could be a lil more PC in a podcast, but its Hannah, you know there will be some bombs, so maybe listen with caution.

the guy was fast. not just fast but f*cking fast. insanely fast. I’m 49, grew up in the 90’s, love McGrath and all that, but Hannah was extremely special in his raw speed.

Boxers talk about the old pros, but in MX it’s like the older generation was a ghost. those guys made it possible for these guys to do what they do! they were the first to pioneer what could be done on modem machinery. it’s easy to go into space now. Imagine being one of the 60’s astronauts.
