Opinion: I would love more Speedway races over stadium races

Edited Date/Time 4/22/2022 3:59pm
Daytona is my favorite race of the season, and this year was the first year I went! (flew down from Jersey.) Was trackside up against the fence, couldn't possibly get any closer and my guy Tomac did the burn out right in front of me! Atlanta speedway is a very close second for me

These races are always the most exciting, and the layouts are always great, with a mix of technical and high speeds (minus the gnarly 125 footer, but imo that was sweet albeit dangerous for the riders.)

I feel there should be more speedway races on the circuit, and this will also help alleviate the argument that "the bikes are too fast for indoors".

Thoughts?

I prefer them too. The 450s arent too big and they can make it more like mx than cookie cutter sx. Ive never been to one in person but on tv they are more entertaining

The next question would be what other motor speedways would they hold the races at? Not many have a grass infield large/wide enough to hold a track. Nashville Superspeedway has a large grass infield, but the seating is quite small. Auto Club Speedway in Fontana, CA, despite having the seating capacity, doesn't look to have a large enough infield. Although if they used part of the speedway for the track, it might work. I am part of the bandwagon though that supports having more races at speedways though.

Love em to. This won’t fly well here but i liked this track way more than Daytona, and same thing last year.

I think they should have less races in stadiums as well...they need more races outdoors, with longer lap times, maybe some natural elevation change, 40 rider gates, go to a two 30 minute motos set up...supercross should add more of those kinds of races.

But since they won't...I'm a fan of the speedway races...I'd even support doing a residency at a couple of them for two weeks (race on Tuesday and Saturday for two weeks)...then either end the supercross season sooner (to give riders more time to test for outdoors, and/or to heal up) or provide some weeks off during the supercross season.

Yeah man I'm with you there, Daytona is sweet, no question, but Atlanta seems to reliably turn out awesome races.

Absolutely. I would love to see at least 3 each year but maybe 5 at the most. The track layouts/design are so different and love the longer lap times.

I agree, more of a 50/50 split would be better. 450’s aren’t going anywhere but sun 50sec lap times is no good, maybe switch out the smaller stadiums for speedway venues?

Anyone remember the original plan for the Charlotte MXGP? There was an original track map on the 4 lane NHRA track which looked really unique. It would be cool to see one round each year there.

With all the room why not build true bowl turns. Like the ones from the 90s. There’s no danger to crowd on the speedway tracks. The flat turns are meh..

Ditto! The ATL and Dayton races were great and would love to see more of that. With the speed of the riders and the delta in speed between the top guys and everyone else the indoor tracks are too small imo with constant crowded track with lapped traffic.

I'd like to see 2-3 speedway races per year, but why Atlanta? Wasn't the stadium crowd in Atlanta known for being very high energy and a lot of fun?

If you think Anaheim rounds suck, it is obvious that you haven’t attended an A-1. I’ve been to Supercrosses all over the US, and nothing beats the excitement of Anaheim 1. I went to Daytona this year, and the crowd was almost silent during opening ceremonies. No excitement at all. I used to go to the Georgia Dome races back in the day, and they were always packed and the crowd was really into it. The speedway race in Georgia this year sure looked pretty deserted compared to the crowds I remember from the Georgia Dome days. The track was certainly bigger at the speedway, but the racing certainly wasn’t very exciting. Some of the greatest races in SX history took place in the Georgia Dome. The most exciting thing I remember about the races to date at the Atlanta Motor Speedway was McAdoo’s famous crash, not exciting racing. I’m a big fan of both Supercross and Motocross, but in my opinion, they both have their place. I guess to each their own.

Three's a good number. 3 Triple crowns, 3 speedway races works for me. Weather is only potential factor but that just keeps it interesting.

Totally down with more speedway races . Attendance will probably be the deciding factor . The residency idea might help that though . However you guys get it done , I’m on board .

Why not build more bowl turns? SX has too many of them is why. Sand section, wall section, left hand turn after long as possible start and couple of flat turns should be requirements for every venue. And never having whoops again like 2021 again I hope.

100 percent makes them bigger more exciting. In Victoria in Australia back in 2003 Avalon they had one massive track where racing was awesome . Massive step on steps off , dragon backs everything you could throw at a SX. Ask anyone there boys complaining about the 120' triple in Atlanta - Avalon had a left hander into a second gear hip double grab 2 gears and hold it on for a 130' plus Triple was insane. and Two strokes everywhere.

Daytona has a vibe that is unmatched with Bike Week going on and all that. But I love the speedway races... The follow cam, the pics that come from speedways, etc etc. That being said I think 3 is about the most that could be done. Charlotte and Bristol come to mind first but so does Texas and Fontana for more westward places. Even Las Vegas.... That one to finish off the series would be insane.

How does a completely outdoor paved track with some dirt track mixed in have anything to do with SX in any way, shape or form?

Anyways, I love the stadium races. I certainly wouldn’t mind a few more.

I’m ready to trade AT&T Stadium for Texas Motor Speedway.
