Has anyone considered maybe he went to Star because a spot was available?
I'm pretty sure nearly every team had a spot available for Tomac.

Yup. Including Star
Sure, but then it's like saying he went to Star because they have a bike with two wheels. Well, yes, but...

He was already with Monster Energy...it was a no-brainer plus they use KYB, cable clutch, and make a ton of power. Look at the Deegan Deal. The Deegans are OWNED by Monster. No way they'd let him go to RedBull.

I’d say Monster is owned by the Deegans

Yeah, I get it: it was a 100% frivolous statement.

It’s pretty obvious that he went there because his old suspension guru went there and the fact that they would let him change the bike as he sees fit.

KTM would not allow for that

Why is this a question? Is going to KTM the default move against which other moves need to be justified?

Why did you start a pointless topic?

Inside scoop. Tomac had a meeting with them. Roger came out to Tomac’s house with bikes and a mechanic. They tried and tried to get the bike working, but in the end the KTM just wasn’t good enough. (Basically he had a higher number of crash instances on the bike on average, and went with the blue bike) This is exactly what we are seeing out of the steel frame riders this year so hats off to the homework Tomac did.

Now you know case closed.

I have no idea what OP is smoking, but I do sometimes wonder if Villopoto had any influence on Tomac's decision to go to Yamaha. Villopoto was clearly miserable at the end of this time with Kawasaki, and then really came out of his shell when he signed with Yamaha. Of course, maybe just being away from the grind helped Villopoto's attitude, but maybe he had a word with Tomac? Maybe they experienced the same conservative attitudes and bullshit with Kawasaki, and Villopoto told Tomac how great the Star team can be?

Um, not to throw a wrench in all your spokes, but if you listened to the recent interview with John Tomac, you'd know. There's a suspension guy nicknamed "Gilly" that now works at Star. He once worked at Kawasaki with Eli, and before that at Geico with Eli. To Eli, this guy is a Merlin-like wizard with suspension and chassis setup. When Kawasaki canned him, it broke Eli's heart. It was only a matter of time before they got back together, and now that they have, the results speak for themselves. Eli appears genuinely joyous, and almost seems to toy with his competition.

What we'll never know, is how dominant he would have been on the green bike if they just hadn't fired that Gilly guy. The mind fairly spins at how dominant he COULD have been and what Kawasaki COULD have had.

Ah, the corporate world.
Hi Gilly!

I agree. As hard as tomac hits everything, the ktm forks would probably snap off on the rollers
🤔 interesting take. Japanese forks 48mm Austrian factory forks 52mm.

I’m not sure what the Pingree reference was, but I kinda agree with most things I’ve seen him speak about. I’m a Grant Langston fan as well for many reasons. Wink

My point is that the “Factory” Showa forks are not 48mm. I’m not sure what KYB is using on the factory bikes, it may be 48mm now a days. They had 50mm tubes at one time…

Gilmore I would say is the #1 reason than any other

He didn’t have enough racecraft for Webb.

They’ll be equal after this season. Tomac probably ahead.

50mm tubes went out the window as riders learned the aluminum frames were rigid and the large forks weren’t good for them. Kyb has been 48mm for years. Pretty sure showa is 49mm.

As for the Pingree reference, it was a light hearted joke based on Ping snapping his 125 at Phoenix in half at the head of the frame and triple clamps. Thought it was a comedic injection into the gentleman who said Eli would snap off the forks in the rollers.
