Definitely a killer psych move though to take advantage of a moment when you know your rival has no chance of retaliation.

OC-Scooter...

I was siting in the seats at Daytona & watching Mac Diddy do his burn-out...& remembering The Sprinkler, James recognizing Dale Earnhardt, his “Sky Shot” on the Yamaha...

All of it.

Didn’t James do something to his knee that year at hi-point and he dnf’ed the last moto? Despite the shoulder injury, Reed was the one saying that if he got a start that he could beat James lol

Oh yeah Reed was talking it up before, but then busted his shoulder and Stew took advantage of that situation, as he could and should.

The beautiful thing about that Daytona night was how easily he was riding. Just flowing around, on the pegs, with that gnarly jump ofcourse. Look how calm his body language was until he crashed there.

Insane how he came back after that crash. Heart and amazing talent

That Daytona 2011 pretty much was James' entire 2011 season in one race. Incredible speed, big crash, incredible speed. How he got back on and started hitting the wall jump again remains one of the gnarliest things I have ever seen, 100%.

I walked the track after that race. It looked impossible up close. The ruts up that tiny face where deep and the breaking bumps from everyone checking up were super gnarly but the craziest was that wall. It literally was a wall when facing it. I don’t think anyone else’s brain would allow them to try that. One of a kind for sure

Would love to hear from the track builder, because it was a weird obstacle... To have that lump coming out of it, like why wasn't it just a dip to the wall?

I think Carmichael designed it and that lump before the wall was put there to see if anyone had balls bigger than brains.

ESPECIALLY that he did it after that nasty crash which obviously knocked him around.

It was so easy for him, even after that, he kept doing it.

Nuts.

Philosophical moto discussion time. I personally hold James in possibly the highest regard of any racer I’ve seen because of all the times he made my jaw drop with things like the wall jump.

But from a legend to be remembered standpoint is it better to be the guy who is a legend because of all the wins and titles like RC and MC or the guy who influenced a whole generation of racers stylistically while also having a very successful but possibly underachieving results wise career?

I wonder if james will be forgotten as time goes on since he doesn’t have the records RC has.

As an example, I’m too young to really understand why people hold JMB in such high regard. He was a champion but a ton of people won more. He even got his ass kicked by Bradshaw in 92 (who didn’t even win the title). I’ve watched old videos and I can kind of understand that he was better than his competition technique wise but I’ve grown up watching racers who are more evolved than him. Come to think of it Bradshaw is another guy who has the mystique but didn’t win a lot.

I have to think generations later though kids will be able to watch the wall jump video and understand how insane that was but maybe not. Maybe it will just look like an old racer who isn’t quite as good as who they watch normally

I miss James. His talent and straight up balls raised the level for everyone that wanted a shot at beating him. We all said we’d miss him when he was gone and man o man could this sport use a James Stewart right about now. I remember hearing James say he hated jumping triples. I can’t wrap my head around it.

I certainly agree with you. Watched him in person at the former GNC classic at Mosier Valley MX when he was on 85's.
I became a huge fan, and it stuck for his whole career. Miss his presence and style.
I think he hated jumping triples because quads were more fun for him!!

Jambalaya, you make a good point. I don't think James will be forgotten because he not only was fast as hell, but he did things that were so jaw dropping and dangerous looking that I don't think will ever be replicated. But, his glow will diminish over time because we do tend to remember the guys with the stats more.

To your JMB point; he was a guy you simply needed to see in person to appreciate. He never looked scary on a bike like James did. Most of the time he'd just look like he was trail riding around for more than half the race in fifth place. Then, in one lap he'd just ride by everyone with zero drama. I don't remember him ever just scorching everyone by 40 seconds. He was just super calculating and had technique that no one else did. Pourcel and Craig ride similarly, but JMB was much better. It is crazy how he could make going so fast look so boring and easy. No wonder he drove Stanton nuts. Having to practice with that guy must've been confidence shaking.

@Jambalaya : James was amazing, no doubt, but don't sell JMB short. I saw him first hand do things nobody even considered, just like Bubba at his time. For instance, absorbing the take-off of a big table top to pin it all the way at the French GP in 1989. It was CRAZY and super fast. DV was maybe there also BTW, we were racing French 80 cc championship.
