Comparing dirt bike prices to high-end bicycles is irrelevant. High- end bicycles are decked in carbon fiber and after market parts. An all aluminum bike for comparison is about as far as you can go for that point and is drastically cheaper.
I bet it’s far cheaper to produce a $8000 mtb than a $8000 450.

No it's not. Not only do bike manufacturers have to do a full size run (moto only one), but carbon layups are nowhere near as easy to mass produce and cast aluminum.

Granted I live in NZ, but I do a fair bit of MTB and just had a look at what's available on our used market. Any less than $1000 and you're not really going to be having a good time. Less than $250 and you're gonna be struggling around with a beat up old hardtail unable to do anything serious. I totally get where you're coming from, but once you start getting more into it you start to realise that the more expensive bikes really are worth it.

The mtb brigade are suckers and will argue black and blue to defend and justify their stupidity.
Too many goobers have infiltrated MTB’ing recently.

When I was 18 back in 1985, I bought a new RM250 for $2350 OTD. Prevailing wage rate for a Laborer in construction was just under $16/hr.
By comparison, P/W wage for laborer is now $38/hr so by comparison, a similar bike would cost around $5300. That almost works out to 1 or 2 year old models, but not brand new. Interesting the rate that wages have climbed (in some fields) in comparison to some vehicles. It be interesting to check the percentage increase in say a Ford Mustang GT over the same period.

Comparatively speaking, we ICE Motored Dirt Bike riders have absolute bargains on offer to us. And this is coming from a bloke that makes Bicycle (and Motorcycle) frames.

Tell me about it, I just bought a new mountain bike last week for $4,000 and it doesn’t have a motor! One of my biggest regrets is buying my current Husqvarna for $12,000 and seeing the price slashed almost in half when the 2020’s came out. Action sports are not cheap!

My buddy just bought a new MTB for him and one for his GF. $4000 each. I looked him straight in the eye and said, “dude just one bike alone was a used YZ250 with a full rebuild. Both MTB’s together was a YZ250.” He looked at me, shook his head and said, “I know.”

I love MX too much so for me, I always compare price of almost anything to a bike that I want or new parts for a bike I already have.

I just can’t justify anything over $300 for a bicycle.
Yep...I get it...
I would really love to have a vintage bike in my collection either a 1980 yz 125g or the new1981 water cooled yz 125 h...fully restored and only to be ridden on retro days at our local track..
But the $$$$$ asked for even moth eaten, rat chewed examples is beyond ridiculous!
If I'm gonna drop over 10k on a bike, it will.be a brand new ktm 350sxf..those old bikes were all unreliable, woefully suspended pieces of shit...in 12 months they were completely outdated and you were lucky if you cold give it away..
When it comes to making a choice....I rode those old heaps when they were new...give me a modern bike any day! Nostalgia definitely has its limits for me..

If you were into cycling I bet you would not have an issue spending more than $300 on a bike because generally speaking that would only buy you a garbage bike unless buying used.
I pretty much only buy used bicycles. I just got a 3 year old Giant CX bike for $800, it’s $2k new. I know the seller, he had just dropped $800 on new driveline and parts.Sold my Cannondale CX bike so it ended up costing me $300.
Now saying all that, I just dropped $12k on a new Husky TX300🤦‍♂️

A $300 bicycle is about the same as riding a 95 XR200 with faded to white plastics, bald tires and a muffler adapted from a lawn tractor..

This is one of the most uneducated comments to date.....the comparison is not even close. A mid-level MTB ($4000) is equivalent to a HEP Suzuki privateer bike and a top end bike is Roczen or Tomacs bike....and they are made in multiple sizes. In moto, you cannot buy the absolute best whereas in cycling you can buy the exact bike the best in the world ride.

How many bikes do you think Honda would sell if they were 60K with Carbon everywhere, full ti hardware, works motor and suspension etc? Oh yeah....and then you would complain the maintenance required on the motor. Look at street bikes.....some are approaching 100K now for the elite italian brands and even a CBR 1000 SP is almost 30K.

yup. I try to explain that to my moto buddies. They think i'm nuts that i spend the money i do on my mountain bikes (4400 and 5500usd) but then they wonder why every time they ride their 500 dollar craigslist special it breaks.
Yep. Mountain bikes are like everything else, you get what you pay for. Quality matters to me.

Yes good ones are expensive. But you can find deals. I bought 2 like new Demo bikes for my wife and I. Got her 2019 Liv and I bought a 2020 Stumpjumper.
Both carbon, and they each sell for over $5k new. Got them for about $5500 total.

Dude!

I am AMAZED at how fun these little "trail scoots" are and the great times you can have out on the trails with them. Also, it's like they DON"T USE ANY GAS!!!

I bought a Trek Rail 7 EMTB a couple weeks ago for 6 grand. And that’s with an aluminum frame and mid spec components. The high end version is 12 grand.

Where in the heck are you living that construction laborers are making $38/hr? I want to move there It's not even close to that where I'm at and there is lots of $$$$ around me.

That,s a crazy price. Why is the crf250 so heavy ? I kinda liked the bike, but 228 lbs , no thanks. Stroker crank cr125 has the same Torque and 28 lbs lighter.

When I graduated college, I applied to AGC apprenticeship in San Diego and laborers were starting at or around $30 an hour. After a couple of months on the waiting list I got offered a spot but I decided to take an office role instead. Figured my body would thank me later.

Smart move Laborers are usually retired at 50, do to the body being shot. I was in 3 unions 89 to 03. I tried to get back in the operators union, there only hiring military guys. 89 to 98 union hhg rig, all the east coast city’s. Job cordinator was scarred of the mob guys. I said I,ll meet with him every week for 2,000 , very cool guys and very professional. As long as the check is in his hand.
