I was at Seattle last year, in the day program he was absolutely crushing the massive whoops. In the pits, signing autographs, the guy was lean and fit. He just had a podium in Detroit a few weeks earlier. Comparing that Seattle 22 to last night's 22, come on man....
And Reed is headed home.

When was the last time Chad really turned up to a season ready

To me it’s a wider thing than just the fastest guy on the night. There is no doubt Reed is a good rider and yes he made the main but he just pulled out. My point is someone else might have missed out because Reed (quite fairly) beat them that would have put more effort in having made the main than Reed did. I’d just like to see someone with more of a future in the sport get the chance than someone on their way out.
If Chad was using some kind of past champions provisional to get into the main each week, I think you'd have a very valid point. But as it stands, if the kids behind him have a future in the sport, they'll beat him straight up, and not be gifted their chance.

This whole post is pure speculation.
Sure it won't be long before someone gives the inside line, Matthes?

He can step away from the sport right now and nobody would give him crap for it. The man is an absolute legend.
I’d care, as I think he will get better going forward. But I understand your thought process.

This is why KTM didn’t give him the Musquin ride. The writing was on the wall.. I remember this happening to Jeff Ward. Exactly why RC went out on top.. Reed can’t still 25 forever but he sure did it better than anyone else. I HOPE he gets a good start, throws a lasso around someone up front and has a good ride before the year is over but it’s doubtful. I hope people remember his great races and not this season
Not doubtful. If he’s feeling it.

Not sure it's quite the same. IIRC, Ward won a 500 national (maybe Budds or 'Dilla) in his last year ('92) when Stanton and Bayle were on the track with him. Also, Ward won the OKC supercross in '91, the year before he retired. Not sure Reed even has that much left. Edit: Just looked in the vault and the 500 National was Steel City.

Any word on why he pulled out?

If he's not more in the mix, at this stage I'd rather see him just do some whips in the opening ceremony and bow out of SX career safely.
No sure. But his bike was hitting him in the ass all night in the whoops .. never seen it that bad for him

Rather he announce his retirement tour and have this happen than have this happen and decide to announce it's his last year. No matter what happens he gets to go out with his head held high. He knew. That's why he made the decision.

I saw him shaking off arm pump after the lcq and knew the night wouldn't be good from then. Didn't notice him in the main til he was the first to get lapped, all alone in last, and he pulled off a few corners later. Did anything happen to him to make him fall that far back, or was it just a shit show for him?

Who cares how he does?? If someone else deserved to be out there than why don’t they beat him and take his spot in the main? Last one of the superstars and you guys wanna bitch about him being out there? Crazy.

Well, he's got age that's not on his side. He's got a family that needs ever increasing amounts of attention. He's trying to line up the next phase of his life/career. He has sponsor commitments and obligations. Things that the young bucks don't have to deal with. Not crying or throwing out excuses...just pointing out some truths. Chad will have to decide what his priorities are. Can't be all things to all people. Tough spot for him...but the upside is...no matter which way he goes...he's CHAD FUCKING REED.Evil

Wonder how many of those 250 starts equate to finishes.

Since he has more podiums, top 5s, and top 10s than anyone EVER, I'd say it's a lot.

Awful lot of bashing going on in this thread. I asked last week about Reed’s condition as I thought he was better than his result. I was reminded that he had a couple broken ribs from down under (I think that’s what I was told). If that’s the case, let’s see if he can heal up and do a little better. I do get it though, it’s hard watching him struggling at the bottom of the field, but it sure sounds like he has a legit excuse. I’ll cut him some slack, he’s earned it.

I disagree with the notion of “he’s tarnishing his legacy” by not finishing at the front anymore. He’s still only adding to it with each main event he makes. If he makes the main, he deserves to be there. Even though he’s coming in ill prepared due to a few things, I still respect the hell out of him for traveling to these races and going out there one last time for all the fans.

I will say I was one of the many questioning KTM not giving him a fill in role for Marvin but I guess it really does make sense. The off track publicity he brings (which is a lot) in the pits and fan interaction is just not valuable enough for them if the TV cuts to him pulling out of the main or finishing in the back, or worse not qualifying, if they are paying him to be on a factory bike.

Hope he continues to get better and go out on a healthy note!

I don't get the age thing because Reed is only a couple years older than Brayton. JB is still in the mix at the front of the pack, and at his peak he wasn't in the same league as Reed. Just saying I'd expect Reed to have the same speed and endurance as Brayton, maybe better...if he were prepared. What we've seen is the result of very little preparation and a heart that may not be in it anymore. Physically, I think he's still capable.

You never say “one more time.” Leave healthy, and enjoy your family. He’s done more than enough. Go enjoy retirement mate.

I just don’t understand why he’s so slow. I remember him saying “slow guys don’t get fast. And fast guys don’t usually get slow”

You look at brayton who’s about the same age and makes you wonder why chad is riding so slow

Did James not stop and pull off in 2016 and not return to sx the rest of the year. Always sad to see a great champion see the end of the great career.

Obviously we all agree about the lack of preparation, but when it comes to age you have to remember that in sports physical/mental decline isn’t typically a gradual process. That’s why you always hear about “the cliff.” When it finally happens, and I mean really happens, it’s pretty sudden.

Take Peyton Manning for example. The guy led a record breaking offense in 2013, was still at the top of his game in 2014 with incredible stats, but then was completely unrecognizable in 2015 when he led the league in interceptions despite only playing 9 games. Then there’s the mental side, a year before Windham called it quits he was still quite fast and willing to send it, then one day out of the blue he decides he’s not okay with sending the big rhythms anymore and retires on the spot.

When you talk about Brayton and Chad you need to remember that the difference between 35 and 37 could be massive. We don’t know what Justin will look like in two years but I’m inclined to believe it won’t be much different from Chad.

I’m a fan, not a hater...but what we’re witnessing is the result of a man’s pride & ego getting in the way of his legacy as a champion. Some guys got out in time to preserve that...RC, Stewart, RV, Dungey...Windham, and others. Chad Reed , however has not. It’s not bringing respect & honor to him to enter this season ill prepared...and with his heart obviously (he said as much) in four wheeled racing & not on two any longer. I hope Chad has an epiphany & makes a decision to walk away healthy and with his legacy intact while he still can. I hope Ellie has the guts to tell her husband that it’s time. Historically though...men with the huge egos & personal pride that I’m sure Chad Reed has, suffer humiliation & great loss before they HAVE to walk away. I only hope Reed is an exception to that.

I disagree. Why does it have to be about his pride and ego?

Maybe just maybe he loves racing his dirt bike. He’s said it himself.

12 months ago Reed was a top 5 and podium threat. A huge crash ended his season and possibly plays in the back of his mind still.

He wanted to race weeks later thinking he could get his body right. But at his age is just doesn't heal anywhere near as quickly as he used to. His fitness isnt where he would have wanted it to be with busted ribs in the off-season either.

Also what sort of bike has he built himself? Last year he had factory equipment. This year he's doing a solo effort again. No doubt it's a decent machine. But its probably not quiet comparable to the factory bikes.

What we're witnessing is him coming in hurt. He podiumed last year. He didnt lose that speed. He broke his ribs a few weeks ago and isnt prepared.

And hes still qualifying. On a privateer bike. At 37. Hes a legend.
