I have suggested this on a few of these bike theft threads. Take off the front wheel and keep it separate under lock and key. Maybe remove the chain too? Will it stop the left? Who knows? But, it'll sure as hell slow em' down and maybe discourage it a bit. And I highly doubt anyone local that knows these losers will turn them in. I see it constantly in the Detroit area. Street cred. They will not snitch and/or coroperate with local authorities.
I could see it deterring them. Those guys wouldn't be going out and buying a bunch of complete wheels and putting them on

Insurance will drop you in many cases if you have a dog on duty. Dog bites thief, you’ll get sued.

Also, commercial deductibles can be $5000.00. That’s right off the bottom line. You’ll have to sell another 50-100k worth of product to get back to square one.
Never knew that about the dog- but in a way doesn't surprise me. How does that situation work exactly?

Aren't you allowed to leave a dog on your own premises? Surely the thief should be the one getting sued/prosecuted? The dog is the owners property and wouldn't be biting the thief if he hadn't broke in?
Terrible really if things have come to this!

My wife got bit by the dog down the street. They got in trouble because the dog was in the street and had a history of getting out. Had my wife been on the owners property, then the law is on the owner's side. So in Texas, the law is on the owner's side.

I'm pretty sure they are really good people , and considered high on the social scale. It's just that we don't understand their culture , being that we all have jobs and can actually pay for bikes. When you're held down " by the man "........it gives you the right to take what you want , when you want and we don't dare say it's wrong.

Quick question : When do insurance companies finally get fed up paying out money in these area's , or raise the rates so high , that no shop can afford it? Wouldn't it be smart for them to charge a shop 10 X more in Baltimore , then let's say some shop in Idaho , Montana , or Utah?

I truly wish every state was run like fucking Texas! If it was.......you damn well know the theft would crawl to a very low number. I know one thing....if I owned a shop , I'd never try and open one up in the cities with high crime rates. You're just asking for it , when the people who live in those area's are the considered less , then the mold that grows under 3 week old dog shit.

Thanks for reply- Glad to hear that the Law would be on the owners side- if someone is entering your property or premises. Yes, on the street is a different story because the dog should be under the owners responsible control and not running loose causing havoc and suchlike.
I maybe did hear though a story though as Newmann said in his earlier post about owners getting sued after thiefs did their scummy 'work' and dog repaid them. Good on the dog!
Shocking if you can get sued though if your dog bites someone on your own premises, that has illegally entered.

There was a story here in Portland a few years back ( I can't remember if it was here , in this town though ? ) That a thief broke into a house and ate shit on a tile floor in a kitchen. He broke his arm , and then sued the home owner , and won in court. How's that for justice?

My God Jeffro- that is terrible. Thats what my initial question was, how does this stuff work and how the heck could he claim anything other than getting prosecuted himself? You hear stories and I am never quite sure because I am never quite sure where I heard them- but similar sort of stuff. That though takes the friggin biscuit!
Hope they rot in hell, to coin a phrase.

... wouldn't surprise me if the owner of the property whose tiles the thiefs so unfortunately slipped on used 'non approved floor tiles', possibly wall tiles instead.... irrespective of who had the accident- could have been the owners wife, relative, a cleaner or a thief even who slipped- they could still sue him because the tiles used were clearly described/stamped on the box 'as NOT suitable for floor use'. I would think it was some sort of scenario as this. I expect the thief was still prosecuted for breaking an entry and attempted theft but this had no bearing for the situation of him slipping on the incorrect tiles and was able to sue.

Not sure but have heard stuff like this before as said. That at times is how the Law can work in quite a bizarre and unexpected way.

Another sayin' ... "The Laws an ass...'
Seems it is at times.

The unfortunate part of this story is that the owner of the shop is a 2nd generation owner who has been in the industry for 40+ years. About 15 years ago he sold his dealership in Austin to one of those corporate entities that was buying up everything before the economy crashed and bike sales went to shit.

He was out of the business for a few years, moved to New Braunfels, TX (which is a nice old school German/Czech community about half way between Austin & San Antonio) and got the itch to get back into the industry. He's a multi-line dealer (Kawasaki, Suzuki, Yamaha, Polaris) and has a large shop. I'm sure he never thought this would happen in this location.

I guess they got tired of ransacking dealerships in Dallas/Fort Worth & Houston and decided to expand their horizons.

Karma (and a pissed off Texan) is a bitch.

Display signs that say "Dog on Premises" but do not display ones that say "Beware of Dog".

My last couple of bikes have been KTM's, and they cannot be ridden unless the dealer unlocks the EFI with a code through KTM USA online.

Do Japanese bikes have this yet? Haven't bought one in a while...

That article and video is awesome!! Pieces of trash getting exactly what they deserve. And o what a surprise it's actually working to deter these pieces of shit from doing what they're doing. Why can't we implement that here? I believe it said that type of criminal activity in the UK was reduced by 40% in 1 year...thats huge. I'm not sure how cops deal with these thugs ripping around cities on dirt bikes and ATV's in other parts of the country but here in Connecticut they're untouchable...absolutely can't ram them AND they're not even allowed to pursue them, reason being because if they are and happen to crash and get hurt they then sue the department along with the city. Pisses me off. Why is it any different than a cop chasing a guy whose in a car or on a motorcycle intended for the street? WTF is wrong with our judicial system? Scummy lawyers clearly has something to do with it.

I feel for the shop that was ripped off too, hopefully these shit bags get caught. Thank God for insurance. I'm sure there's a deductible but it's still gonna be a hell of a lot cheaper than paying for 6 bikes and building damage out of pocket.

You ever seen the result of a trail boobytrap?

No matter the group, there’s probably someone who intensely dislikes what you’re up to.

I have seen trails booby trapped happened to me when my friends and i were about 15 years old. Guy who hunted in the woods [illegal] didnt like That we rode in the woods [also illegal] so he put 2x4's with nails sticking out from every angle and hid them in mud and leaves.

But isnt there also a difference between coming into a booby trap while riding thru a trail or while committing a felony and likely armed with a stolen gun or 2 while doing so? Granted thats speculation. But id be shocked if none of them were armed lol

You can educate, nurture and empower them so that they can make the right choices. The Youth are our future remember.

Or shoot them

Or if Saudi Arabian law make a nice short sleave, delivered in a public Arena. I like this State sanctioned version of punishment. I’d buy tickets to that..

That's exactly what I meant with those pics. Anyone who does that kind of stuff on a mtb trail , should be prosecuted! I meant these traps for the shop owner.

I'm sure some of you already know the story about our friend Danny , who got decapitated by a cable going across a logging road? I've told it a few times. But we rode together all day , and then he headed home on the logging roads , but never made it home. Long story short.....new neighbors bought some land close to the logging roads , didn't like dirt bikes going up and down them , and strung a cable across the road.

So good god Steve.....no I do not want anyone to do that kind of stuff on any trail , to hurt recreational people out having fun.

Thefts around my area have been out of hand. I caught 2 guys in my garage last month trying to take my 450. Its happening everyday. At shops and out of peoples homes.

You cant tell me that with technolgy these days that manufactures cant addd some sort of factory GPS option. Something intergraded with the engine computer. Im sure all this theft manufactures actually make out in the end because people buy more bikes, but it truly sucks to have to constantly worry about your shit being stole. For me it takes the fun out of the sport. My bike now sits it my garaged chained up like fort knox.

We used to have a Shepherd at our shop, Ruby, she'd bark like hell all the live long day then hide at night.

KTM's new 4 stroke bikes won't run without a code first being applied that is supplied when you register them, its a pain in the ass for the shop but it keeps these degenerates from being able to do anything with them, maybe the Japanese MFG's should follow suit.

We got broken into last year, had some security footage but it was zoomed in SD screen grabs. Idiot walked by hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of product and stole the till instead, which only contained our float, he also snagged one of the sales guys' laptop. We put the images on our Facebook page, which has around 1100 likes. We are a very well respected shop in the area and the public just ran with it. It got over 1200 shares, 160,000 views and the thief was caught because a local motel owner recognized him from our photos. Social media is a hell of a powerful thing, we didn't get the cash back but Rick's laptop was recovered.

Same crew hit me 2 years ago

Same mo

Rent a uhaul and go hit as many places in 1 night as possible

Not reported here are the the private bike thefts in addition

They have a local minion who meets people riding - gets their info “becomes their buddy”
Then they go target their bikes

Police dont care

from what ive been told by several friends/family members that are lawyers, this story goes around in almost every way possible. its even in movies (like liar liar), thankfully its not true! at least not that a single one of them has been able to find. so I cant say its 100 % never happened, but you'll notice that everyone has heard almost the exact same story, but no one knows the actual source of it. I personally am not a lawyer, but I would think that if its on you're property, and a bad guy breaks into your property, you may be protected from being sued by someone who was bitten by your dog. It may not be the same thing, but here in Connecticut, if someone breaks into my house, I can shoot them with no duty to retreat. Some places call it the castle doctrine, I cant imagine it being much different with a dog.

I can see this happening shops will have maybe one bike on the floor. Which will be bolted down just so you can at least check it out. Come time to buy they get yours from the back where they are all locked up.

Kind of like how they treat certain cold meds etc now.
