Perhaps these people should consider if their “news source” is lying about CA and its economy to push an agenda maybe they are lying about other things as well.
The politicians are really talking up Calfornia's GDP, but that doesn't have much to do with personal wealth. GDP is a measure of worker productivity per worker (how hard people work, basically). You have to work hard here to survive. California produces a lot of agriculture but it seems like everything in the store costs $5.
They can also sell or lease out their significantly valuable commercial property in CA.
Otherwise, stagnant growth or a decline. California sucks.
The perception of GA rates are a reduction factor to Yam are misunderstood. As a Midwest transplant to GA I can vouch GA rates are 20% higher. Today's vote to move forward with GA nuclear plant Vogtle unit 3/4 and passed construction cost sins of Kemper county , MS facility will cost taxpayers of MS, Al & GA huge at 40 bil projected costs. Construction forecasts were 15 bil in 2008. There is not a winner anywhere for all of us.
Note this is all Southern Company Power jurisdiction. Too big to fail???
A great example of this was when we had the worst govenor in the history of our state, Granholm, which ruined a decade for us, gave a 1200 acre chunk of state land to Toyota to build a RD tech center. Thats great, and this was near during the financial crisis. Wouldn't do anything for other businesses tax rates in Michigan including Big 3 but gave this land and tax abatments to Toyota. How did Toyota reward the area and the state? By bringing in mainly Japanese employees from Japan and california residents. Did almost zero for local hiring economy.
The median house price in Cypress, CA (Yamaha’s current headquarters) is $676,000. The median house price in Kennesaw, GA (the location of their east coast office and distribution center) is $224,000. It stands to reason that it is more difficult and expensive to attract and retain talent for Southern California based companies.
Pit Row
I'm sure the cost of living is a bigger factor.
Welcome, Yamaha.
I always love the doom and gloom from folks outside of CA always saying (or maybe hoping) CA is on the verge of collapse for decades. CA isnt perfect and it has both its challenges and problems.
But there is also a reason its the 5th largest economy in the world and single biggest contributor to the US of A's growth and economy by a significant amount. It has nothing to do with cheap land, energy, labor, or taxes. If your company depends on those or you believe those are the most significant elements in business, well some place else might be a better fit at the moment.
There are many reasons Alta was not founded in a low tax state like Kansas and Harley Davidson is opening and hiring folks for a new division in the heart of the Silicon Valley. Will wholeheartedly agree California's metro areas are no place for unskilled or low pay labor or low margin businesses. But that hasnt been whats driven CA's economic growth for decades.
Its a different model than a place like Texas. Good for Texas. But that doesnt mean California is going to implode or lose a leadership position in the economic pecking order. Lots of very expensive places from Manhattan to London all contributing outsized percentages to the economy.
Yamaha moving staff to GA makes sense. But dont read too much into it.
