Thoughts? I was watching Toronto 2014 and remembered they had a split lane. Made the racing interesting but I don't remember seeing one since.

Splitting lanes used to save me a ton of time commuting when I lived in California. It blows my mind that this is illegal everywhere else.

It was James Stewart, not the split lanes, that made 2014 Toronto interesting.

I like them on occasion.

Conceptually they're ok, but with the rise of GPS data analytics, I think their use has become somewhat obsoleted. Top guys are trying to nail the established fast line lap after lap.

The idea is good, but in practice they're bad for racing. With litpro they know after first practice which side is faster and that's that for the night. Nobody will take the slower side so you're effectively cutting track width in half making it even harder to pass on.

Yay, but they need to modify the 'faster lane' to slow it down just a little as the night goes on to make the racing more interesting and force the riders to try the 'slower lane'. I know that would be hard to do though. I guess I like them in theory.

Split lanes are a tough thing to get behind. One lane is ALWAYS faster.

Sometimes you can get into a situation where the faster lane gets deep and chopped out and the slower lane will become faster as the moto goes on. I feel like that rarely happens tho.

I’m okay with them at 1 or 2 rounds but don’t think they belong n every race. Like others have said, 1 lane will be quicker than the other. If that’s the case then the option lane would only come into play if lappers were involved

Minneapolis triple crown had a split lane where no one used the outside until feld added a small roller on the inside lane, before the last main, without telling anyone. Split lanes are so hard to manage.

I think they are cool idea, but as most have pointed out, it doesn't take long for everyone to figure out which one is the best / fastest. Maybe throughout the night Feld instructs the track crew to not touch whichever side is seeming to get more use. This would at least make a rider think about it and maybe switch it up mid race if the "faster" side is getting real beat up and rutty.

Agreed. I think the only way to go about split lanes is to make the lanes technical and slow, perhaps with some type of a speed control obstacle. Something where a mistake is likely and you have to decide what option would would cost the least amount of time.

I'm a fan of split lanes. I know there is an advantage lane... but if you do a rhythm vs whoops lane, it might even out for some guys.

This is exactly what went through my head. If one side is faster than the other, you have everyone switching to one line and have eliminated half of the track in that section which equals one lined with zero passing.

I don't know if you are talking for professional racing only, but they are definitely nice when designed properly at local tracks.

I remember when Anaheim had a split lane first turn one year. During the main, which was a good Reed/KW battle, the "fast" line changed as the main evolved. That one seemed to be done correctly.
