Much respect, he was a bad dude on a motorcycle. He was very Ron Lechine like, talented on race day and he liked to party. He could pull chicks like a champ too. His injury absolutely sucked! Bike broke, jumped off, compound tib/ fib in the dirt. They could never get the infection cleared and just kept reducing the size of his leg until he was 100%. It became an above the knee amputation in the end. I was so bummed for the dude, it was a sad way to finish an outstanding career.

It was an infection that developed after a knee injury which created the need to amputate his leg. I know he had some things going on in his personal life during his career like almost everyone does but I grew up watching Demuth ride and race locally here in Texas as he became The Sheriff and have nothing but respect for him on a bike. He was a badass!

All the people saying "Its just a dirt bike. Let it go" obviously have enough money to get another one. For all we know this kid, or his dad, mowed lawns and busted his ass for a long time to get that "POS 2003 YZ 250f". You suspect the father and son over the hammer swinging "buyer"? That seems like a stretch in this situation, but if that was the case, I would say it was a very poorly executed mission. You would think if he was recovering his own shit, he would not come alone and if he did come alone and instead of calling 911 he decided to start swinging a hammer at people, he once again likely got what he had coming.
