In the physics world, moving a physical body can be boiled down to a VERY simple equation: F=MA, where F=force, M=mass and A=acceleration.
If you want to increase A, decrease M and/or increase F.
The real-world result is this: less mass equals less force required to gain any acceleration. That means less HP necessary to accelerate to any speed, less force necessary for the brakes to stop you, less force required by your tires to change direction, and less force required by your own body to initiate any change in direction or attitude of the machine.
There is absolutely a performance benefit to reducing any amount of weight on a motorcycle.
Ain't even worth my time to rebuttal all the bullshit here. Yall can keep your Japanese bikes, I'll keep my "unreliable" KTM. But I sure do miss my Kawi
a) even though the weight are slightly heavier its in the right place, you dont feel it while riding and I can buy lighter/good quality aftermarket bits that bring it to the same weight and make it feel even more lighter if I want to without compromising reliability
b) reliability (enough said)
c) price of bikes and parts
d) availability of parts
Its kind of that simple for me.
I have said if MANY time before, KTM/Husky make great bikes....they simply arent for me, I dont hate them they just dont suit me. And yes I have ridden many KTMs/Huskys... I even raced KTMs back in early 2015 believe it or not, ok ok only half a season ...but still.
Pit Row
There is a reason why factory teams spend big dollars to get the weight down to the limit. It is to maximize performance, and they do this even on machines with "proper" weight distribution.
Likewise, each of my two strokes over the years have felt and acted significantly lighter than my four strokes. My YZ125 feels like a BMX bike with a motor.
I know this is a weight thread, not a KTM vs the World thread, but both myself and my younger cousin owned KTMs a couple of years ago and they broke/lost bolts/destroyed subframes/had throttle lock issues constantly over a 12-15 month period. And yet.....I'm still thinking about a 250SX or 350SX-F for 2017.
Guys: Ride what your heart or head tells you to, and don't get so hung up on others' opinions.
Two bikes, each with the exact same HP output, with the exact same tire pressure and identical end resulting spring rates, with equally skilled riders land from a jump followed by a straight. They drag race to the next turn which is a considerably long distance down a very well-groomed track that offers identical traction across the entire surface. Every possible factor is equal, except for one: one bike weighs 15 pounds more than the other.
Which bike would you rather be on?
Now, considering all that, let's assume that you are fit. Let's assume that you will maintain your bike. Let's assume that there will never be exactly equal conditions such as the one I described above. Let's assume you may value some feature of one brand over another. Wouldn't you still rather have a lighter bike in a competition setting if you could? I sure would.
But lets face it no track is perfectly groomed each lap, no track has perfect tractable dirt, etc etc etc etc...so in all reality its a stupid arguement
lol this thread rocks lol
Post a reply to: So does the 2017 CRF450 prove that the current production aluminium frame 450's are as light as they will get?
