Great to see these and it mirrors my experiences from the '80s and '90s - thanks for sharing. Skip Norfolk was the best. Every time I'd show up at a national or SX I'd search out the Honda truck. At one point I was just watching him do his thing and he looked up and engaged me in conversation. We chatted for a while, I asked some technical questions, had some small talk and he invited me into the area where they were working. My 89 320 Maico. Std, it was a truly great bike. But, when the SEM ignition self destructed - the Magnets would part from the aluminium Flywheel - we only had a Motoplat Internal Rotor ignition available. The Tiny rotor, with the red plastic stator set up. So, absolutely bugger all flywheel effect. It made it damned near unrideable. I cured it by machining up a Dirty Great BIG Brass 'Top Hat' type flywheel , that keyed over the tiny rotors hex / spanner flats, with other bolts through it into the rotor. This TMR “spare no expense” engine build 96 Cr250 with CrankWorks built crank, flat top piston setup. Full HRC ignition, is probably the fastest, longest pulling engine I have ever ridden. I routinely go back & forth between this bike and my lightly modded 23 KtM 300SX…. KTM is slightly better off idle but once the CR hits midrange/top end, it’s game over, the top end overrev is simply amazing. I am 100% certain I could race this bike against modern bikes and finish exactly where I would on my modern bike…… I would also be working harder…

I had this type of a question before I stopped racing in 2015. Less 2 strokes around. 4 strokes needing $4K into a 250F engine just to be competitive in A class. Less and less people at the races, prices getting higher and higher. Quality/materials and technology not equating to the price increases. I wondered when it would end. Then I started going to Pro/Am's to get points towards my pro license. It was just too expensive on a single man's income paying for rent, used truck payment, all the moto oil, gas, entry fees to race more than once...

As the most of us know fantic uses the base of the yamaha yz with different plastics and airbox, cdi with 2 mappings, different pipe and a piston that was developed with the maddi racing team. Because I had a good deal on a fantic xx250 2023 with about 3 hours I couldn't resist to buy it. I was curious on how they ride and how they compare to the yz. I have lately spendt a lot of time in the garage with my CR 125's from the eighties. Getting my 1984 CR125 representable condition for local motorcycle exhibition and slowly starting to build 1985 CR125 from the pile parts placed in random boxes. While I was rebuilding linkage for the -85 CR125 I admired how good sealing for the linkage bearings Honda had in the eighties compared to modern bikes where bearings are toasted just after one riding season.
