New helmet time, top 3 pick?

6D ATR-3 for me 

As a XL Fox V3 rs rider myself with a huge weird head,, its the one that fits me best.. so No#1 would be the one that fits you best.. and then just go for the one u like the look of and has the bells and whistles u like.. - if you can match those 3 in a mid to highend helmet these days u have a very good helmet on your head.  

Apart from Fox, The FLY Racing formula seems interesting with the tec.. but its another thing to charge.  6D has grown on me with the ATR 3

Alpinestars Supertech M10 for its adjustability 

i have always liked Arai and Bell but they have not updated their helmet platforms in a while and im sure they are excellent options just a older generation 

I like my helmets to live up to or surpass the ECE 22.06 standard 

Nothing has compared to my atr3. Ive always been in between a large and extra large. I have a large with xl cheek pads and it literally feels built for my head. Its light too. Pads hold up great to removing and washing as well unlike others ive owned. 

TLD is the best fit for my round head...  Arai fits me second best... those are the only two that actually fit me well.. 

I have a Leatt 8.5 which is comfortable and has plenty of venting. They do have the little rubber shock absorbers inside the helmet, but if I'm being honest they seem pretty gimmicky as it doesn't seem like they'd do much in the event of a crash. I'm happy with the helmet and would consider another one when the time comes. 

I should mention that I bought this helmet just this year and came off a Shoei VFX. I would avoid the VFX due to its weight (and I thought it was hot) though it was the most comfortable helmet I could find when I bought it. I was between the Leatt, 6D ATR3, the new Fly helmets. Bought the Leatt because it was on a good sale. 

I've had too many bad concussions to NOT be picky about helmets.  

I currently have... AlpineStar SM10, Bell Sphere, 6D ATR-2, 6d ATR-3 and this summer also ordered a FLY Formula S carbon but sent it back as I didn't care for the way it fit my head.   In order by fit, weight and confidence in a helmet , personally I'd rate them in this order....ATR-3, ATR-2, SM10, Bell. 

Different fits for different heads but that's my current opinion...your head may be different.   

The one that fits the best and is also ECE 22.06 certified. That will be different for everyone, but for me, it’s:

1. Astars SM-10
2. 6D ATR-3
3. TLD SE-5

Tld...I like the se4 better and I have both the 4 and the 5

I have a TLD SE 5 Carbon and really like it. I also had an SE 4 Carbon. Quality and fit are always top notch with TLD.

When they came out I bought the original 6D ATR and liked it. 

Not really sure why I switched. But I'm taking a hard look at the new 6D ATR 3. I believe in the 6D technology.

Can't speak to a 3rd choice but my son loves his Fly Formula S helmet.

Bell

6D for me…currently have 2 ATR2”s, my newest ATR2 is lighter than my older version…if the ATR3 is even lighter & smaller I will be getting a new one…the only complaint I have about the 6D is the mounting of the cheek pads could be improved. As an added bonus Keefer states the new ATR3 has a lower CG and he knows the guys personally and they would only sell the best helmets😂and they sponsor him👌

I have an SM10 and it's nice, but I'm going back to an Arai for my next helmet. I've just never felt anything even remotely as comfortable.

I’ve got the tld as carbon 5 and it’s the best fitting helmet I’ve ever worn. I’ve unfortunately had to test one out and I’m a huge believer in the way that helmet protected my thinker. It was a hard head slam and I had absolutely zero concussion symptoms. It’s crazy you can actually feel the way they slow down your head on impact. So thankful for 6D to have pushed the helmet development, I think we’re all in a much better place now vs 20 years ago!

6D ATR-3

Had a 6d and it fit ok but just seemed so big on my head. Went back to Bell moto9 carbon flex. Should probably replace soon, not sure if will go with the moto 10 or not

You're really going to want to try on the ones of interest to you and see which one fits your head best. Each MFG er uses their own "head forms" that gives the helmet the internal shape. They will be different from Mfg'er to Mfg'er. They develop them on their own and they are not all the same. Plus they will tweak the head forms sometimes from year to year.   I made a couple of helmets years ago and was in the business for a few years. 

I love the bell moto 10 (ece 22.06 version) and fly formula. I tried the 6D ATR3 but it just didn’t fit my as as good as the Bell and Fly.

I can't compare to very many of the current models, but I love my Fly Formula. I came from a Bell (can't remember the model but mid-upper tier) prior and the Fly is hands down better for me. It was a little tight at first but it fits like a glove now.

I have had a bunch of different brands, but last switch was from alpinstars to Leatt.. probably going to stick with them as they don’t make me bite my cheeks!

Bell

I go by fit too. My last v3 was from 09 ish , I Loved the way it fit. My new v3 I got for 45% off , same m size. Cut into my forehead & I wish it covered more of my forehead like older helmets did.  It fit tight on the sides but loosened up with 4 times on& off.  I pealed the fabric back & ran the end of a 3 lb hammer against the foam on the forehead part.  Not pressing hard  , I got it to fit perfectly. My 1st ride  on 6-27 I tested it out Real good. I hit hard my head into dry sand & my body into a clay whoop. Broke 7 ribs near my spine, ripped a hole in my collapsed lung , 1/2 in+ bone spur on shoulder ko,d that flat, tore 3 rotator cuffs, strained 1 , & other injuries. I got a white flash , ko aprox .6 seconds.  I,d say that’s a Dam good helmet .

Personally dig 6D's ATR3 - It's lighter and flows way more air than my ATR2. 6D also sells different size cheek pads and even cool liners for those who like to custom fit their lids. Have also tested Bell Moto 10's and Fly Formulas; they have proper fitment (size medium/normal head shape) and pass the comfort test as well. Anything on the ECE22.06 list and the latest FIM standard are likely your best bet (safety-wise):

I'd say try them on as fit is subjective.  I just purchased a new 6D coming from a Bell.  My final top 3 were Bell, 6D, and Alpinestars.  One of the biggest deciding factors was after my crash in June in just a few month old Bell that is now a wall ornament.  I thought to myself how nice it would be to have this helmet checked out and possibly rebuilt.  With the 6D at least there's a chance the helmet can still be utilized.

 Any of the ECE 22.06 certified helmets that are comfortable and fit you well  are going to be good. 

 One thing I ask customers to consider is if they will be able to afford replacing the helmet in a crash.  And depending on that answer I may try and find them a  more affordable option that is similar so that  when they do have a big crash, they are less likely to wear a helmet that is no longer safe to ride in.  in that case. And sometimes I do not sell the helmet that is the best fir for my customer so sometimes they end up not buying a helmet from me.  I only mention I sell gear so that I am being open about the likely bias that comes with that.

For me, I wear a SM10  and it fits me the best. I sell them along with 6d, Arai, and Leatt,   .  I have yet to try an ATR3 , or the Leatt MX helmets. But I sell them because I trust them and have read as much about them as I can find . 98% of the helmets I've sold have been  SM10,SM8 or 6D ATR2 or ATR3 or the youth versions. Leatt is not as popular but they make an excellent product!  

 I would say that the ART3 is probably the safest helmet in most types of crashes if it fits well.  I've tried ATR-1 and ATR-2 helmets and neither fit me well  . They had odd pressure points. But they are great helmets. 

Leatt's small discs are for rotational energy absorption.  Its not the extra cushion that gets used as a suspension  in the same way that 6D helmets work. Its more geared towards the rotational energy absorption.  

I wear Leatt MTB helmets and am thinking of trying one of the 8.5 or 9.5 models. They have some really aggressive pricing when they go on closeout this time of the year. Along with Leatt boots. I wish they made my size so I could try them out. 

 I love my Alpinestars  SM10, mine is not the current generation. The current generation fits a little better than the older one that shares the shape with the SM8.   Which I also have.  The venting is great even on slower speed stuff in a SXS. And blows away the current Shoei  in weight and venting. 

I have heard a lot of positive feedback about the Fly formular too from customers. I have never tried one on or ridden in one though. But I've heard from many people who are picky about their gear, that really like the Formular over any others. 

 If You remove price from the considerations, I would still go with the SM10. I do want to give the 6dATR 3 a chance, but after the ATR-1 and ATR2 did not fit me well  I'm not in a rush to try one. 

If fit  is equal on  the ATR-3 and SM10 I would go with the ATR-3 . rebuildable, and likely performs better in the lower energy absorbing than any other helmets. That area between feeling fine and getting another concussion.

For real? That bums me out. I have a Fly and was gonna try a 6D. I tried on my buddies A-Stars SM-10 and hated it. Maybe I just need another Fly helmet. Fits amazing
