I love how on the review show Weege and Matthes kept saying that conspiracy theorists were using confirmation bias of Jett's moto one to prove that the fix was in. Then the very next sentence say that Jett was limping after moto one thus using their very own confirmation bias to prove the fix was not in.

Gun to my head I think it was legit, plus the fact that Hunter was the better rider all year long tells me he deserved to win it. That being said I'm honest enough with myself to realize that Jett is the only person in the world who knows for absolute sure if it was a legit result. I don't know why "We will never know." is not an acceptable take.

I don’t think you understand what confirmation bias means.

"Confirmation bias is the human tendency to search for, interpret, and remember information that matches what we already believe while ignoring facts that disagree."

Me outright saying "I don't know" kind of shows that I don't have any confirmation bias.

Yeah, the OP nailed the definition.

Aren't you curious what this other guy thinks it means?

@McG194 what did you think of the MEM pod this week because in my opinion, that was the most insane shit I’ve listened to. Talking about insurance scams and shit, that shit was embarrassing.

There's a difference between confirmation bias and proof beyond reasonable doubt. One is a social tendency which often doesn't hold up under falsifiability, while the other holds up in a court of law.

It's an established fact Jett came into the season with a potentially career altering injury. This is proof beyond reasonable doubt because virtually anyone who has broken their talus has explained that it's a complex injury with a tedious recovery timetable, with some stating that it takes years to regain full range of motion or have permanently lost it altogether. Jett has been physically struggling since he returned and the only people who downplay or dismiss it either haven't experienced the injury themselves (or a comparable one), or straight up resent the Lawrences (fanbase of a certain rival or crazy sports fan mindset). Given how dangerous our sport is and how fragile our bodies are, this underyling reality virtually excuses Jett not only beyond reasonable doubt, but beyond all doubt.

ML saw Jett finish the first moto and hobble back to his trailer in a state of anguish, yet the tinfoil hat mob insisted a goofy kid miraculously pulled off an Oscar-winning act, after a 30 minute moto of total physical agony. They persist Weege suspected foul play during his post race interview with Jett (even though it sounds indistinguishable from any other Jett interview), even after Weege states that the race fixed theory is a conspiracy. With falisifiability in mind, assuming Jett planned for Hunter to win, why does Jett gut out the rest of the first moto instead of pulling off? Why does he bother lining up for the 2nd moto? Why didn't he just sit out the day after qualifying? Why doesn't he fly home after press day? Why doesn't he just stay home altogether? How does a reputable family without a history or controversy, suddenly colluded to defraud...the sports betting market?!? How come Jett didn't roll over for his brother at the SMX finale last year, where he had a more convenient excuse to let him have it? How does Hunter's worth suddenly skyrocket even though his contract was already signed when he was in the middle of battling for the SX championship is year? There are so many holes in this theory, yet this schizophrenic mob continues to grasp at straws which hold little weight in a social setting and would most certainely not hold up in court, but continue to demand a criminal investigation and spread their idiocy anyway.

How difficult is it to accept that a strange event happened and in spite of what took place, a race was carrried out and everyone involved participated in good faith? "We'll never know the truth" is a coy, disingenious disposition to justify entertaining a ridiculous conspiracy, for an audience who are unable to comprehend or make sense of what they saw.

FWIW, I formally request @ML512 to provide a definitive testimoney of what he saw in person (or anyone else at Vital Staff involved) so this nonsense can be put to rest once and for all.

Idk what’s worse. The fact that you wasted your time writing that, or that I read half of it.

You outright saying Weege was using confirmation bias is what I’m referencing. Everyone knew his foot was injured badly that is an established fact, seeing him limp isn’t confirmation bias.

Now let's talk about sunk cost fallacy, where you're so committed to a position you won't cut your losses and move on.

I'm not sure where I stand on the matter, but the thing that gets me is, why in the everliving F*** would you take away something you've been consistent with the whole season?(Jett and his custom footpeg)

Make it make sense...

I’m Australian and love the Lawrence brothers but no amount of talking about the injured ankle will convince me that Jett didn’t lay up.  Anyone other than Hunter and he pushes forward for the win imo.  Heck Eli raced supercross with a broken leg.  I just think with Hunter’s recent history of narrow championship misses he just couldn’t do it to his brother again.  I don’t think he takes any joy winning the championship over Hunter this time.  For me, it is simple as that.  He has had a jacked ankle all season long.  Is it worse now, sounds like it 100% is worse now but in normal circumstances, he fights to the very last lap.  He just loves his brother.

I do think people aren't seeing the nuance in this take. It may not have made a difference, but I do 100% believe that the level of "try" would have been higher if the situation were different and it was Deegan he was racing for the title with, he finds a little more and pushes closer to the edge.

I think he found it a lot easier to accept that it just wasn't in the cards with Hunter winning instead of him, and in his Dad's words, he said "I'm not going to die for this", where as if it were Deegan, it could have been "over my dead body!".

Now "lay up" isn't the wording I would have used, but I don't believe we saw EVERYTHING Jett had. But I do believe he gave an honest effort. Either way Hunter earned it IMO.

Im not fussed about the whole situation, it helps Jett the most, he can now go through his career without worrying about breaking his brothers heart again and Hunter will be happy that he has his.

The better rider of the season won.

Maybe you should re-read my original post. I literally said:

"Gun to my head I think it was legit, plus the fact that Hunter was the better rider all year long tells me he deserved to win it."

That doesn't mean that I 100% buy it. It is just worth being open to both realities. One of the big problems with society today is we are too fast to pick a side and then nothing will deter our belief. I'm not looking for something to sway me one way or the other, I'm okay not knowing for sure. It's good to have some skepticism.

some ppl dont take too kindly to nuanced positions round here

he's simply asking the question alot of us are, and it's a thoughtful question.

would he have been 'able' to dig deeper than he did if it was deegan he was battling for the title and not his brother? that's not the same as fixing or throwing. that's simply pointing out that there's a slight shift in incentive.

Conspiracy theories go like this:

Someone else tells you what to think. Because the suggestion lines up with your bias, or you like controversy you ignore any evidence that contradicts the theory.

Sometimes there is zero indication, just “suspicion”. Which is the case here.

They are the antithesis of Ockham’s Razor- which states.

“when presented with competing explanations for the same phenomenon, the one that makes the fewest assumptions should be preferred.”

We watched 2 motocross races where neither “favourite” won. A very common situation. Evidenced by the small number of “perfect seasons”. We were told a rider suffered a painful injury during the race and this affected his performance. Something that is all too common, and rarely questioned for obvious reasons.

Some people, seemingly baselessly, accused one rider of deliberately not trying his best, in order to assist the other rider. (Who was already leading on points, and had won more races during the season)

Facts:

Both riders have a demonstrated history of trying 100% to win.

The rider accused of “throwing” the championship was not leading the points.

He had a well documented serous injury which has clearly been hampering his riding, and even walking all season.

There is footage of him landing hard in practice and appearing to aggravate the injury (big jump with the Kawasaki rider also doing it. Smoother)

He claims he aggravated it further in race one - something that is common, even for previously uninjured riders.

He had it treated/strapped and toughed it out in race 2. Also a common occurrence. As is “sitting out” race 2.

He is seen limping badly afterwards.

He has withdrawn from a prestigious and well paid event.

They are all facts!

Facts that support the most likely explanation.

All I’ve heard is twisted suppositions and opinions which ignore the facts,to support the far less likely suggestion of events.

I have a confession to make: the only reason why anyone has ever beaten me at anything ever in my entire life, even back when I was a newborn baby - is because I faked an ankle injury and let them. Man oh man, I am sooooooo glad I finally got that off my chest.

That’s the only thing that’s puzzling me.

All I could think of is that Jett did a practice session with a regular peg and liked the freedom of movement, so he decided he was strong enough to run it? Then he hyperextended his ankle during moto 1 and painfully found out he wasn’t strong enough?

I guess that’s too mundane when there’s a ton of clickbait conspiracy theories going around.

Respect to you for being able to set aside your fandom of the Lawrence's and your obvious Aussie pride to call it like it is. I'm an American and a huge fan of the Lawrence's, too. But it was apparent to me that Jett was laying up at Ironman.

Thing is, I'm will to give them a pass on this one. Jett loves his brother and he was probably willing to let this one go.

But now that Hunter has a premier class title, no more Mulligans. He's going to have to earn them on his own from here on out. If the Lawrence's do this again, it's the first thing they will be remembered for.

I’ve been on the fence the whole time…. Tried all the suggestions, go re-watch the moto, go listen to this interview or that interview, etc.

Re-watching moto 1 very carefully had me leaning that he waited for his bro… no other explanation.  Reading/listening to ML’s reporting leads me to think he’s hurt, he just couldn’t go… I was totally on the fence about it.

Jett dropping out of SMX is much more defining to me.

Now, for all the people saying listen to Dazzy, listen to Jett, listen to HRC, listen to Hunter…. Does that mean you’re going to listen to Star, listen to Deegan or is your bias now in play?

For what it’s worth, I’m an RJ Hampshire fan.

And congrats Hunter, well deserved.

Now let's talk about sunk cost fallacy, where you're so committed to a position you won't cut your losses and move on.

Are you referring to me being committed to the position of accepting that I'll never know for sure? You got me there.

That's a general observation introducing another heuristic in play on this issue.  As to you specifically, you tell me if the shoe fits.

Before the race, noone had the bias that Jett would lay up. It was an observation from Moto 1, not a story told to confirm biases.

Sometimes there is zero indication, just “suspicion”. Which is the case here.

Did you watch moto 1?  Plenty of indication.

Jet rode below par - we all saw that.
This was explained as being the result of an aggravated injury. I listed actual facts that back up this explanation.
List the alternate facts that make the “throw the race” scenario more likely, and not just a “conspiracy theory” for the gullible.

If Jett were to decide to throw the race, he could have pulled off after the first lap of Moto 1. He would have still finished 2nd in points because Deegan couldn’t have caught him, and Hunter would have been the Champion before the last moto even started.

But that sort of logic just isn’t salacious enough for some, I guess.

For all we know, Jett could very well have aggravated his ankle injury early in the first moto and tried to nurse it until the end, especially if Hunter was so far back and it initially appeared that he had some damage to his bike. Once he realized Hunter was good and charging through the pack, I do believe that he was a bit deflated and while he was able to ride a little bit faster but not at his full speed.

My guess, and that’s all it is, is that he probably got some pretty potent painkillers between motos and that (coupled with the modified foot peg) helped him ride quite a bit better the second moto, but it obviously wasn’t enough at that point.

I know, I know, that’s not a viewpoint that would bring out the torches and pitchforks or drive rage bait clicks for the TMZ moto crowd, but it fits with what I saw (other than the pure speculation about the painkiller cocktail part of course).
