I don't understand this take.  Tomac is the most prominent current rider in the sport, and just been part of one of the most unexpected moves in quite a few years.  Absolutely nothing wrong with a respected outlet like Swapmoto asking a question like that.  If he gets something interesting and usable from Tomac it would be a great scoop.  If Tomac can't say anything then just respond accordingly.

We've all seen pictures of roger turning handles on the mill. Do the other teams have a competent fabricator on their team? My guess is if they want something one off they have to go through Japan? All the teams have top notch mechanics but mechanics are just that ,not to be confused with fabricators.

All seriousness aside, watch the aftermarket over the next 6-8 months...cable clutch conversions for all popular models.

And the subsequent rider endorsements "the cable clutch provides me with the feel I need to compete, and I can now manage the slip window better"

I am going to struggle mightily to contain a massive chuckle the first time some vet rider tells me with a straight face they like the engagement point of a cable clutch better.   Especially considering most of them ride the entire track in 3rd gear and never touch the clutch.

To be fair, I've hated my KX clutch since the instant I got on it, tried aftermarket levers, bleeding it, but the engagement point is where the lever hits my knuckles. I stalled it constantly after getting it and have to whole hand clutch on the start. I don't care if it's hydraulic, I just hate the engagement point.

I agree. The slip window was increased on jump faces with the cable activation. I prefer smoke coming from my Hinson clutch cover instead of fluid.  😄

Even with my lacking of pro skills, I could feel an improvement in clutch feel using an ARC lever and perch on my YZ450F. It helped the on/off feel of stock with a smoother feel and release.

It is funny, and I am one of those 3rd gear VET riders, but you really can fine tune a cable clutch engagement. I’ve got an ASV lever on my KX250 2 stroke and the adjustable great. BUT!!! I have zero issues with me MC450 hydro clutch.

We don't use the clutch, because BACK IN OUR DAY it would barely hold up to the abuse of the gate drop, let alone corner exits.

How many weeks of SX do they talk about Eli’s cable clutch on KTM during the broadcast?

1
11/5/2025 8:45pm

There's some slo-motion close up video out there of Eli slipping his clutch to control drive all over the track, including jump faces and the whoops.  Now I understand why he wants that 'feel.  Quicker response time than adjusting your right wrist position different directions.

Of course Eli discussed it during his various recent interviews also.
