FIM implemented the Goggle Lane in MXGP start of the 2018 season. This was in response to injuries determining the podium for three Motocross of nations in a row 2015 -2017.
After Chase Sexton's goggle issues at Pala, I have to ask why hasn't the Goggle Lane made it to US racing?
Seems like a good idea….
I don't understand the problem, I am pretty sure I have watched vids of guys putting goggles on while riding, II think I Jeff Ward put a pair on over a jump, I could be wrong tho.
I think it’s a good idea not because a podium being decided by it but for pure safety reasons. You still lose time so it’s fair among all riders. Maybe a tad more difficult for privateers with one person in their pit.
They should amend the rule now and not wait until someone loses an eye.

I been saying that for decades... DECADES... now it's laughable... if the riders care so little about themselves f'em

I remember when The Netherlands lost the gold in 2018 at MXoN because of a rock...
You sure have a way with words
I’m amazed at how shitty the “pit lane” is in AMA motocross/supercross racing. Overly crowded with no real clear zone where a rider can come in and go out without worrying about running over people/mechanics standing around. I know pit stops are uncommon but that doesn’t mean there shouldn’t be a dedicated area for it in the off chance it needs to happen in my opinion.
What's the need for a goggle lane? They could mount an extra pair on the bar pad if it was a likely occurrence, save what, a half lap minimum?
I feel like goggles should be mandatory, outside maybe mud races. I know MX guys hate being told what to do, but Ryan Smith was told he couldn't race with jeans, and his name and number sharpied onto a long sleeve t-shirt.
Then again, we're talking about a sport where guys choose not to chest or neck protectors, or hand guards, because they don't look cool, so... I don't know. (Yes, I know there's legitimate reasons why riders choose not to run neck protectors and hand guards) You'd think, with as bad as injuries can get in this sport, more guys would safety seriously.
Change the rules, mandatory to wear googles at all times.
Why did sexton take his off? I never actually heard.
He was 10 seconds ahead of 10th place Savatgy at the time with 20 minutes plus 2 laps. He could have stopped and still finished in the top 5-6. Dumb decision from a guy that continues to shoot himself in the foot.
I don't understand why mandatory goggles is such a controversial opinion. Forget a freak accident like a rock hitting your eye, what about dust? It only takes a small grain to blur your vision, and that makes you a safety hazard to other riders. If this is really about just not being told what to do, then why require boots and a helmet? I understand that we have to draw the line somewhere, but I can't think of one legitimate reason to not wear goggles outside of a muddy track where they're going to get caked in mud and obscure your vision anyways.
I agree. It's not like these tracks don't have enough space for a simple little "pit lane" if you need emergency goggles or bent your front end and need a quick adjustment, whatever else. Put it right near the mechanics area where the teams have all their parts/supplies/ and the actual mechanics.
A quick goggle swap can only take 2-3 seconds. Hell even when I was still racing I had one race where my tear offs malfunctioned and I threw my goggles at my dad in the mechanics area, then the next lap I pulled over on the side of the track by him, he put them on my helmet as quick as possible (though not perfect) and right on the next jump I was able to adjust them with my right hand to be in place. This would be something they can even practice during the week and at the actual race track during practice/timed qualifying.
How much time would you loose if you took the slowest part of the track and had a guy with goggles standing right off track? All you have to do is push them over the helmet.
Apparently he was hit with a rock and it messed up his lens/caused dirt to get in. Stresses my point of choosing to race without goggles longer than necessary is really sketchy!
Pit Row
Speaking of safety, are there any guidelines about hair length? I seriously hope Malcolm is able to finish his SX/MX career without getting his luscious locks caught up in a 450f-powered, spinning, Renthal sprocket. That would be a really, really bad situation.
MXGP made Covington cut his hair one year…
When was the last time an AMA rider tossed his goggles under normal conditions? Some here are making it sound like this happens all the time. I can’t think of another time recently where a rider tossed his goggles in a dry race.
I always thought that some of these NFL players with the long hair, there are no rules saying you cant tackle them from grabbing the hair.
I think they did the same to Ferrandis.
Thats what Im talking about.
Years ago, I had longer hair, a mullet before a mullet was a mullet, when coke was still cola.
Anyways, I was buffing out a car one time and my hair got wrapped around the buffer shaft. I felt shame.
I am a fan of Malcolm, really enjoy his laid back style and humor. I do wish that the AMA would require him to wrap his hair into a shorter length while on track. Hair ripped out of the scalp can do horrible damage in just a fraction of a second. Let’s be safe out there !
Shh youre gonna give Kooksey more DC hate fuel
Don't know why you're getting downvoted. As a person who's worked around spinning equipment for a while, it's well known long hair dangling around is a serious no no. Surely there's a way he can keep his hair, but keep it more out of harms way?
AMA is gonna AMA. Agree with all: Just write the rule that "Any rider that removes their goggles during a race MUST enter the mechanic's area and retrieve new goggles the next time they pass the area. Failure to do so will result in a black flag."
Done. Easy.
Is there a rule that says they have to go to mechanics area just to get goggles? Could have them ready at the side of the track it would literally take 5 seconds.
GNCC guys are doing Gas, Goggles, Gels and a bottle in less than 10 seconds....
