"We mentioned the addition of a Goggle Lane in MXGP that began at the series opener in Argentina. It's meant to allow riders who throw off their goggles a quick and easy place to get a new set. The stops are not mandatory this year, but they likely will be next year. In a press release that went out earlier this week, Youthstream's Giuseppe Luongo explained the thinking behind the new Goggle Lane:
"Possibly some may not understand the importance of a goggle-lane for riders’ safety, however this means a lot because in bad weather conditions it’s common for riders (more than 50%) to remove their goggles because they are covered in mud and the rider can’t see anymore. If the riders wanted to change their goggles by entering into the Pit Lane they could lose more than 1 minute so often they continue the race without goggles putting their eyes in serious danger. Therefore, the goggle-lane has been created close to Pit-Lane, which is a dedicated area to be used only for changing goggles, and we have calculated that riders stopping in this area will lose a maximum of 10 seconds. This is very beneficial for the rider: 1st for his health and also for the results.”
The one counterpoint to this is whether or not a rider will continue racing when his goggles are covered with mud because they don't want to have to pull in, and that might create a different hazard for the rider: riding without being able to see clearly. Either way, it's worth watching to see if will have any effect on races, particularly muddy ones."

How much gear is a rider allowed to take off during a race? Can you start without goggles?

-MXGP now has a goggle lane so that riders can stop to get expedited goggle replacement.
-it is not required for riders to stop if they choose to toss their goggles.
-it may be required next year, or in the coming years, to stop and replace goggles if the rider chooses to toss the pair they started with.
That just makes too much damn sense. Not much controversy here but I hope we start doing this in MX.

As sure as hell there will be riders out there who will continue racing without pulling in for a fresh set. These guys will try to wipe their lenses clean as the moto goes on.
So in fairness to all maybe consider a mandatory ride through for for as fresh set of Goggles, that could mix things up a little, adds another dimension to race stratergy and is fair to all.
Kind of a joker lane deal but for better reasons...eyeball protection.
Formula on strategies will come into play...the under cut over cut.

When you lose goggles it will be mandatory to come in to the goggle lane within 2 laps
This isn't a bad idea but poor execution. When will there be a tire change lane? My point is fix the pit lane and there won't be a problem.
Pit lane fix ... 12ft wide in front of pit structure, 1 person in lane to signal rider(pit board), 2 persons in lane during direct rider interactions. Rider must be in structure side of lane(no clogging lane) during interactions. Yeah it's a lot to "require" but it's would be better for everyone. Especially tv coverage.

Mandatory double goggle start for mudders?
There are more I'm sure.
It's not necessarily about catching a boulder from a factory 450 and going blind.
Goggles are the only required safety gear you are allowed to take off during the race, except for maybe gloves- can't do that with a helmet, for instance.
Does the rider get black flagged and DQ'd for the moto? Docked time or positions? Maybe for every lap you run without goggles you lose a few seconds or points? Spit balling. I don't think there is a solution that will make everyone happy but I'm glad they're putting more of an emphasis on rider safety.
I don't think pulling in for a fresh set of goggles means you have any less heart either. In fact, it probably means you have a lot of brains. This discussion will be divided by ego and entitlement vs safety. The ego of tough guy old timers that took roost from 500 two strokes and they didn't need a goggle lane. And the entitlement of fans who demand the riders put on a good show.
What's the first thing they do on the gate with their goggles... shake them out to make sure no dust or dirt inside.
Now guys will just avoid tossing their goggles all together rather than lose 10 seconds. It's fucking stupid and pointless.
