AMA is gonna AMA. Agree with all: Just write the rule that "Any rider that removes their goggles during a race MUST enter the mechanic's area and retrieve new goggles the next time they pass the area. Failure to do so will result in a black flag." Done. Easy.

Except, this was not like a normal tuck the front end. He had obvious goggle problems, which most likely led to messing up on other things. I wish he would have just took a stop to get goggles and then go on. But I don't blame this crash like on his normal type of crashes.

I don't understand why mandatory goggles is such a controversial opinion. Forget a freak accident like a rock hitting your eye, what about dust? It only takes a small grain to blur your vision, and that makes you a safety hazard to other riders. If this is really about just not being told what to do, then why require boots and a helmet? I understand that we have to draw the line somewhere, but I can't think of one legitimate reason to not wear goggles outside of a muddy track where they're going to get caked in mud and obscure...

He was 10 seconds ahead of 10th place Savatgy at the time with 20 minutes plus 2 laps. He could have stopped and still finished in the top 5-6. Dumb decision from a guy that continues to shoot himself in the foot.

Change the rules, mandatory to wear googles at all times.

I feel like goggles should be mandatory, outside maybe mud races. I know MX guys hate being told what to do, but Ryan Smith was told he couldn't race with jeans, and his name and number sharpied onto a long sleeve t-shirt. Then again, we're talking about a sport where guys choose not to chest or neck protectors, or hand guards, because they don't look cool, so... I don't know. (Yes, I know there's legitimate reasons why riders choose not to run neck protectors and hand guards) You'd think, with as bad as injuries can get in this sport, more...

I say this as a fan of his; that was the most Chase Sexton series of events I’ve ever seen. Ditching the goggles and then making a small mental error resulting in a complete pile drive is somehow so on brand for him at this point. It sucks.

I don't agree, he was stupid, his vision was compromised, he was distracted and he crashed. He should have stopped for goggles straight away. Then he may have had 20 + points for the day if he did.

Hard to disagree with this. Jett, Eli and co may have been too far away after the goggle change but Chase would have had plenty of time to get back up to probably 5-6th which would have given him 16/17 points. Not to mention the risk factor - most likely he wouldn’t have held off Eli and then he’s copping roost with no goggles. Hard to say his crash was a direct result of no goggles but it’s highly feasible something else would have happened instead.

Unless his compromised vision distracted Chase and led to an unforced error. Then riding without goggles were a factor. We’ve all been there…
