Probably set sky high so this clown can use the bike as a marketing tool for his rolling circus.

A car dealership here in Sweden has had a F1 car on sale for like 10 years now for silly money just to draw attention to the business

Doesn’t Motorsport Hillsboro have one in the crate? It’s been a few years since I’ve been there.

Exactly my thoughts .  Marketing ploy plus testing the market for the actual owner.   I'm willing to bet if you bid 100K it still wouldn't hit the reserve.  If i were to spend that kind of money on an "unrideable"  I would have bid on Wolsinks Suzuki at Mecum a few years ago ,or something similar that was ACTUALLY unobtanium stuff. Just my opinion

Honest question…what would your net worth have to be to feel ok about buying this for $75k+?  I can’t imagine only having a couple million in the bank and spending 5-10% of it on what amounts to a sculpture/monument in the shape of a dirtbike.  Do you have to be worth 10 million? More?

If I was stupid rich, I'd buy it, PDI it and ride the thing once, just so it isn't new anymore. 😆

Like anything else, there are guys who collect bikes. If anyone follows the Banshee market. Been many in the crate bought and sold the past few years. Prices are WAY up there. The famous ATC250r crate sale. Probably the highest dollar amount so far. All the groups and forums have the same comments. How one wouldn’t own it if they couldn’t use it. Smile . This CR500 could go low 100k range. Obviously some guys who want it. Highest I seen a KX500 so far in the crate was 33k five or take. I have an 04 also. But didn’t save the crate. Who knew!!!

I just sold my '97 CR500. You know what, my CRF450 is the better bike. Way more power and traction. The 500 made maybe a little more power at a very narrow peak in the rev range, but, unless you could get traction, would just spin and was unpredictable. It was fun though when it came on. Kind of a novelty to ride it. Clean ones sell for $10k and a lot of the parts are still available from Honda. AJ Waggoner makes billet cases and some other parts for them as well. No reason to spend more than $10k for one. Ever.

Reserve was met at 75k. It sounds like Kaplan has confirmed his bidders and talked to them over the phone. That will save a ton of hassle with someone bidding it up to 200k with no intentions on buying the bike. Updated video came out around 930 this morning.

Antiques roadshow I see some ridiculous garbage valued in the hundreds of thousands i would throw in the trash. I have no use for a CR500 in a crate but damn that's pretty cool!

If someone has the green and wants it bad, go for it! Myself I never cared for the Honda 500 having owned a couple, but I liked the KX500! It was much smoother and easier to ride, but this isn't about riding one because it's just a trophy.

One lap and the "new" becomes "used". $50K turns to $10K.

Scott for sure did. Although its not in the showroom anymore. He had a 97 500 and 97 250 both in crates. Ill ask him if he still has it.

If I'm paying that much for a CR500 I want RJ's ass sweat to still be dripping on the seat.

I see Kaplan selling old 1970 and 1980 dirt bikes on eBay regularly. Most have a pretty average restoration, and always a very high “buy it now” price.

Owner and his son are two of the biggest blow hards I've ever seen on YT.

Crazy to think that CR 500 will never be ridden because of vanity.

"THE LAST BRAND NEW IN THE CRATE CR500 FOR SALE IN THE WORLD"

"Kaplan Cycles guarantees all motorcycles are as-described"

Wonder what the ramifications are if it's later found that this isn't the LAST one in the crate? 🤔 I would assume the scarcity factor is a large part of the premium price some people are willing to pay.

You could build a bike that looks brand new and put it in the crate for a lot less money  han that. It wouldn't even need all the internal parts of the engine and transmission because it newer gets started...

Just look at it as a piece of art. People buy art for what others consider ridiculous prices but to the buyer, its a passion and they love it. They don't buy a masterpiece to then paint over the top of it and change it. They just like looking at it. Exactly like what will happen with this CR. In a few years, the owner may sell and I will guarantee they will make all their money back plus interest.

The people that buy these aren't worried about money. I think the more it costs the more they like it so they can show it off and say I paid this much. They want people to know they just dropped 80k on a banshee then put it in their collection with 60 other banshees. They buy full warehouses and old dealerships just to set them up and display them. They had a quad or bike when they were younger they rode around the yard and fields. Now they just collect and might have a handful of ones that they'll take for a spin up the gravel road or in the back yard that aren't part of the collection. They aren't like us. They aren't diehard moto people.
