Astars Tech-Air MX (it’s real now)

Interested to see some testing videos and what injuries they expect it to prevent.  Appears to be awesome for ribs/collarbone/back support.  

I remember doing a powerpoint for one of my classes about something like this and how it can impact the safety of the sport and reduce injuries and how it could have helped forkner and other guys. Glad they figured out a way tk make the airbag system for moto. I just wonder how much it costs each crash.

I like the progress of protective gears and I would like to understand this one more.

Its funny that it sounds “revolutionary” when a big brand like Alpinestars does it but at the same time when a small brand with lower budget like RXR been at it since 2006 its over looked by many.

I think the RXR range been really good since around 2016 when they launched a new model. Since then they launched a few more models that fits the market even better. Plus their technology seems by far superior and you don’t need to change the “airbag” after each crashes.

I’m a little confused. Is there an actual deployable air bag?

Yes, it deploys on impact. Its been used in MotoGP for several years now

I've been wearing the original RXR since day one.  It would be considered bulky for a new user but I feel naked without it now, and its saved my ass a few times by absorbing direct impacts to my chest and back.

If it genuinely lessens the chance of something nasty happening in an offroad environment, then it's only a positive thing that it's available.

Sounds like good times for pros, fast guys or just people who straight up have more to worry about to at least have the option.

They have different technologies. Alpinestars deploys an airbag when it detects an incoming crash/impact 

RXR was ahead of everyone with advancing the safety aspect of chest protectors. They've come a long way since their first product. 

It doesn't look the most stylish, but I wear a Hit-Air tethered airbag vest.  It costs $30 to crash (to replace the CO2 cartridge), lol, but the safety factor is well worth it to me (I have to be at work on Monday).  It is exciting the Alpinestars is advancing this technology for off-road !

My concern would be what happens when you have a bad get off in a race and you are still ok and able to finish the event. Is there easy access to deflate and get going again ? We’ve all had gnarly crashes that would have inflated this thing , yet got up and continued on. Generally speaking , if you crash a road racer hard enough to set this off , your bike will be in no condition to ride. 

Anderson was wearing one at Pala the other day. I'm definitely going to be a buyer as I'm old and easily broken nowadays. 😂

Anyone have an image of one that's deployed?  Does it deflate swiftly to resume racing without a cumbersome distraction? 

How about a helium version.  When you crash you would just float and never hit the ground.....? 

Dakar guys have been required to wear them for a couple years too.

Looks interesting but a little more info would be good. Like example scenarios. 

Also noted that you have to ride with it active and ready to engage, or it won't cover level 1 protection for the back which a lot of countries has as a requirement. So if you only have 1 air cylinder left and uses it, you can't continue riding/racing. 

Wonder how race organizations and insurance companies will handle that in racing since if you use the air-function during racing, your gear is no longer up to correct certification level. 

It actually is designed to deploy before impact. It will be interesting to see how this works exactly.  The forces that someone exerts when scrubbing vs crashing would be hard to detect.  But they are far and away the market leader in airbag technology so I'm sure they have it dialed in.  Exciting technology for sure.  

Probably like in MotoGP, it would deflate after 10 s and then automatically rearm for a second "event".

From time to time it wrongly assumes a crash when a MotoGP rider is simply having a gigantic tank slapper and saves it at speeds over 200 km/h, no harm done, carry on lad.

I just watched the reeds newest video with my dad which had the airbag chest pro in it. My dad said it probably won’t explode to inflate basically, at least it looks like it doesn’t. Then i told him all the questions i have, two questions i asked was where do the cartridges go and how does it deflate.

It definitely inflates.  It uses argon canisters that are housed in the back plate.  The off road version is similar and should also be user serviceable.  

I know the GP style automatically deflates after a specified time.  I know someone who has the street version, and the airbag auto deflates after 90 seconds IIRC.  It also has enough gas to have 3 crashes or activations of the cartridges before the protector vest has to be sent back to Astars to be serviced.  I would assume the MX version would be similar, just maybe a faster deflate rate.

My first concern is how hot is it?  As someone who once suffered heat exhaustion bordering on the edge of heat stroke, I have been prone to heat related sickness ever since.  Will it breath or will it increase the heat load?  I've been waiting for something like this since DB was injured at Huron.

How do they mitigate a cartridge being between the body and something solid?

Could this FINALLY be the thing that helps prevent spinal cord/back injuries? Or is this to prevent other types of injuries?

To be fair this is like the 7th tech air system they have released and they all work in a similar fashion. They have a ton of videos and info out there explaining how the system works. Also I believe it will be spring before this will be available to consumers.
