Early laps are important and you can't see crap from 150ft in the sky.

Drone adds a lot to the broadcast, like line choice.

Problem is when they get lazy with it, and use it exclusively vs. using it to highlight options in a turn or a section.

Worst take of the day! The drone is bad ass! Better than a helo even, which is out of budget. I am surprised sky sports still uses a helo for F1!

I like the drone for overhead views but I don't like when they chase the riders around the track. Sometimes seems like the drone operator thinks he's in the race.

okay, let me get this straight

no Will, no drones, and no Weege saying something he may have said before

the shit don't end. I mean it just don't end.

When they first brought them to the broadcast I thought they were over used and not the best “pilots”, I think I made a post about it on SM somewhere.

eating my words now.

They are 100% a value add to the broadcast, and the pilots are killing it both indoor and out

That’s why I said early in the race. It does add to the production, they just need to dial it back

I assume it’s a definition/quality issue preventing them using them in F1 and also the speed? I do think if I was a helicopter camera operator though I’d be at drone flying school about now

Yeah, i wish they’d just go back to the Cycle News report a week later with a half dozen black and white pics . Whistling Honestly , wow .

And FWIW, I think they got the right combo now with Weege and  James in the booth , And  JT and Adam trackside. Pretty awesome

The drone footage is fantastic.  Everyone at our house loves that vantage point.

The main reason the pilot was "higher up" today was the MANY wires and cables around the track. He/She almost clipped em a few times. That and a bunch of huge trees were getting in the way. Sometimes they get a little close and it makes me sick... but I love the drone shots and the way it shows line choices.

Soon there will be 40 of them in the sky following preset GPS paths for each rider. Just wait...

It honestly looked like AP7 used it to his advantage signaling to his mechanics about the goggles

The drone view is awesome. It almost feels like being in the race. I hope they use it more.

I like the drone. They just need to figure out the video compression (which can’t be easy). There’s just a major drop in quality between the ground cameras and drone.

I think it would be fun if they ran the drone around at slower speeds ( that coincide with average lap speeds of various amateur and vet classes ) during race day live occasionally.
I know they wouldn’t be able to fly the drone quite as low in some places if they did that because of the speed difference, but there were a couple of times today where the drone kind of backed off a bit and it was fun to see some speed perspective from the drones angle as the riders quickly disappeared in the distance as the drone was still following the track. It was a lot like a fixed shot along a section where you could really see the speed vs when the camera operator tries to keep the rider in the center of the frame and follows them from left to right, or vice versa.

Also, the drone perspective is much easier to watch now than it was when they first started using it in the broadcast, I think it’s a great addition and it seems to be much more about the subjects they are filming, and less about the drone and drone pilot’s abilities than it was then.

I think it's more likely that he was signalling one of KTM's spotters.

Drone fan here. I like how you can see the different line choices and the results of those choices, plus watch them set up passes. It's hard to see that perspective from ground level. And you get a much better sense of how fast they're going. It makes the race more fun to watch. (To me anyway) I noticed a couple times the drone pilot stayed right on the riders even though you could tell they had to be in just the right spot or the view would've been blocked by the trees, seems like mad skills to me.  The drone pilot who "Thinks he's in the race" ?  Fuck yeah that's the guy I want ! Laughing   I find myself way more into it with the drone footage. Jusy my $.02.

Aside from Hunter not winning today, I thought today's broadcast was 99/100.

Of all the stupid shit they've added to the sport,  you're complaining about a feature that gives the viewer an incredible perspective.

When they first tried the drone it sucked because of what the OP is referring to. Now they have the thing dialed in and it is awesome.

The production was really good and the team of Weege, James, JT and AC is as good as it gets. It doesn't hurt that the racing has been phenomenal.
