Neck Braces

What is your opinion why neck braces are being wore less and less, whether you are an amateur or pro?

I literally just quit wearing mine last weekend. I have been wearing one since 2009. I was getting headaches when I rode and neck/shoulder pain after a day of riding. I just shrugged it off that I was out of shape and had muscle aches. Fast forward to 2 weeks ago I forgot to put my neck brace on and rode a few motos without it. No headache and no neck/shoulder pain. I tried without it again and once again no pain. I think it was due to the strain I was putting on my neck when looking up and my helmet pushing on the back of the neck brace. I’ve been a big supporter of them due to safety but I may just take my chances from now on.

tough debate man. I’m on the fence with them. If you think about it in perspective compared to say football players. Besides a helmet, in general we wear wayyy less protection with a lot higher risk. Anyone doing crazy stuff on a dirt bike is prob crazy enough to do it with minimal protection lol

Ryan’s technique argument regarding neck braces is true only if your using a poorly fitting brand / style.

The atlas air gives me enough movement to never feel any hindrance. So if you wear one get one that works for you.

The pros have to be super confident, and I guess it’s another way of showing your confidence. But that said Tim Gajser been doing ok riding MXGP all this time with his, so that’s tells you all you need to know.

Whether it hinders your movement or not is highly dependent on neck length. Gajser has a really long neck and wears one, whereas I don't even know if Jmart would be able to wear one without it touching his helmet rim before he got his helmet all the way on. There are other riders with regular length necks that wear them too, I just wanted to point that out because it doesn't seem like many people take that into account.

I had a pretty gnarly crash off a double in 2008-ish wearing a Leatt GPX. I augered into the ground head first, the neck brace immediately positioned
the helmet on the neck brace's "table" at first ground contact, then full impact ensued and I felt my head crush the helmet's primary shock-absorbing foam, and then some rag dolling.

Luckily my head and neck were not injured.

I rode home wearily, opened the garbage can and tossed the helmet (it did its job well, Thor SVR for reference), and I inspected the brace per Leatt's instructions and all was good, no damage.

For best fitment for me, I wear Alpinestars body armor and the front of the neck brace sits on the chest protection and the rear strut rests on an undershirt I wear.

This experience has made me a believer and I've been happily wearing Leatt neck braces ever since (currently wearing a 5.5). I have similar, positive stories regarding knee braces as well (Asterisks in particular).

Imo, you can wear a neck brace before the crash to help minimize the injury, or you can wear a neck brace after the crash to help recover from the injury…ala Ryno style. You should never feel a neck brace unless your head goes to the end of its range of motion. If your normal movement is limited or you are feeling aches and pains while wearing one, I’m guessing you’re either wearing it wrong, you’ve got the wrong brace or you’re one of the few people who have a strange body type that just isn’t conducive to wearing neck braces…that would be a bummer. I think mine has saved me more than once.

I think it’s logical to think it will offer better protection than nothing in some situations and possibly aid in causing injuries in others. Pros and cons. The guy getting headaches choice is that the headache con wins. Someone else may think another con wins. Those using them think the Pros of their use wins. I say personal preference.

I had the first gen Astars neck brace and really liked it, I stopped wearing it because my SE4 and moto 9 seemed to make contact with it to much because the helmets came down lower than some of my other TLD helmets. To each their own if it makes you feel safer and you get home safe, win win !

I had a similar experience with an Astar Brace about 10 years ago . I definitely felt the brace do it's job . I wear an Atlas now and can't even tell it's on . I have an average length neck fwiw

Our son and I both have Atlas Air braces. He always wears his, I usually wear mine +75% of the time. His is integrated pretty well into his chest protector. My chest protector is an under the jersey style and its not quite as comfortable/ergo correct. When I'm definitely hitting the tracks hard with more risky jumps, I for certain wear mine. If I'm just taking it easy on trail rides, I just wear the chest protector.

Still a fan of wearing them regardless. If something were to our son and it be deemed preventable by wearing safety gear, I would have a hard time living with knowing I could have done something about it. For me, I'm less concerned.
Just my $0.02.

I wish I could up vote this post more than once. We, too, are Leatt 5.5 wearers which work well with our Leatt 4.5/5.5 chest protectors.

We have a few policies in our house that are not negotiable: 1) If you're going to ride a bike your helmet goes on and is buckled. Doesn't matter if it's the pit bike going to check the race order in first gear. 2) Neck brace is to be worn at all times while on the track.

I understand that neck braces are somewhat uncomfortable and restrictive but the benefits outweigh the minor inconvenience. I'm not telling anyone they must wear one, but for us, it's not optional.

I had a GPX 2 about 10 years old. Bulky but forced myself to use it. I upgraded to Leatt 6.5 Carbon and don’t notice it.

Been wearing one for 10 year. I see the pros I see the cons. Same deal with knee braces. If you gonna crash really hard. You going to get hurt. Doesn’t matter what you wearing. I wear mine 99.9% of the time unless I wearing a big jacket in winter or something. It’s an atlas. I love it. I can see why the pros don’t wear them. Cause they want all the movement they can get, same with there foam chest protector Tongue It all personal preference. Doesn’t matter. It up the the person. And at the end of the day. I’ve won as many championships as ryno Evil

Had quite bad crash with Leatt 4.5 neck brace two weeks ago and still healing my neck pain
Minor fracture in shoulder blade. Worst pain was and is still in front chest where collarbones connect - about at the area where neck brace front strut contacts

4.5 front strut is solid/stiff, Atlas Air seems to have much more flex there and might be considering that next

Are Leatt 5.5 and 6.5 as stiff as 4.5 from the front area or might they be something similar as atlas? ?

There was an article many years ago in Moto Verte where they cited a study that was made in a French university. The conclusion was that the risk of getting spine injury was the same with or without. The difference was that the brace moved the injury location lower, which means more risk of being paralyzed but less risk of dying.

Personally I stopped wearing one years ago due to neck and back pain (I could never get one to fit no matter how it was adjusted). It’s all personal preference IMO.

Atlas air was on and I had a big one in a rhythm section. You could see the bruising of the four pillars on my chest and back major concussion bruising on the skull etc. etc. three vertebrae in pieces the trauma surgeon said that brace took so much load and kept me from completely tearing it apart or breaking even more vertebrae. It actually broke the brace at one of the pillars. I’m a believer and that’s just my story. I always said I’d rather wonder if it helped than laying there wondering if it would’ve helped. Ride safe boys.

Yes, the atlas air is way more comfortable and less stiff than the A stars and Leatt braces. Zero issues with mine.

Leatt 4.5 was very comfy for me too and didnt notice it, just the front part stiffness got me thinking something else after latest accident.

Neck brace indeed was working someway in that case and atleast my neck and collarbones were not fractured... Maybe all this pain is due to having a brace or I would have spinal injury if not wearing one - never know

Prolly go with Atlas if the back part fits under my Leatt chest protector

Source?

I have not seen another study using real-world data other than the Action Sports EMS study. The only other papers I have seen were computer simulations with no empirical data, not even a drop test to verify model results.

Edit: Is this the paper? https://www.researchgate.net/publication/324244185_Protection_from_moto…

Not only is your statement entirely false, but the conclusion of the paper explicitly states the opposite of your claim. "The risk of injury, estimated against the Nij criterion, was reduced by the neck–brace for velocities lower than 5.5 m/s for all impact orientations"

Because they don't do anything and are a hinderance to movement and proper body position on the bike?

Neck braces are to neck protection as face masks are to respiratory virus protection.

"They restrict so much movement" yet multiple championships have been won with guys wearing them. Personal preference, so do what makes you feel comfortable, but looking at record books guys were plenty comfortable and winning 🤷

There is no way to point this out without sounding like an asshole. But Ryno injured his neck again. He has worn more neck braces than anybody I know.

From August last year

Plus he broke his back in 2013 too.
