Good article. Kills me to say I agree with parts of that Sierra club article. E-bikes have expanded the riding market, and you have less experienced casual riders going deep into trails where only hard core mountain bikers went before.
And the culture of responsible mountain bikers maintaining trails is getting diluted by newbies that just want to haul ass on their e-bike.
Not that e-bicycles aren't cool, it's just the effect it has on the trails. Like the "450s are tearing up the track" argument, e-bikes are tearing up the trails both by more horsepower and more riders.

Exactly.

Just like quads, and especially side-by-sides.

Ponder this: what's the difference between an eMTB and an e-dirtbike?

If you think MX and offroad/trails are separate issues, well........stick around and see.

I live 300 yards from a gate into the 3 million acre Tonto National Forest, and SxS are an absolute MENACE around here. As motorized sports get more and more "democratized" and any mouth-breather can buy a SxS and go play Robbie Gordon on the first dirt road they see, the inevitable pushback happens......like here. The Tonto NF is about to get seriously restricted, stay tuned, watch the news.

Why? Because of IDIOTS in SxS and quads mainly, but also plenty of bonehead spoilt brats on new 450s (yeah.....a 17-year old bought that with his burger-flipping wages......and why do they invariably ride the 120 dB KX450s??) who use public dirt roads around here as racetracks. I can't tell you how many times I've ridden one of my dirtbikes to the nearby (illegal) staging are to try and educate a group of morons who just caused 25 phone complaints to the cops and the NFS by racing up and down residential streets that happen to be DIRT.

Result? The 3 million acre NF is about to go MAX restricted, including a permit system and locked gates.

Thanks, assholes!

E-bikes will....ARE...... only exacerbating this problem, contrary to what the "no noise complaints" crowd thinks. There are lots of local preserves and regional parks (at least in AZ) where hikers, MTBs and horses co-exist peacefully .......or used to. Now eMTBs have proliferated, and it's causing MASSIVE resistance from the horse and hiker crowd because every dipshit with a pulse and at least one leg can now go "MTBing" and they run over hikers and chase horses into the bush............after throwing the riders.

Most hardcore dirtbikers and MTBers are VERY aware about responsible riding......but the noob morons who don't have the skill or fitness to partake, and go crazy on SxS and eMTBs f**k it up for everybody.

More MX tracks, or reopen old ones? Maybe......and good luck. More low-skill morons on bikes, more injuries, more lawsuits........more tracks close. THE best MX track in Phoenix was on an Indian reservation out by Fountain Hills. Absolutely world-class place, brilliant terrain..........shut down because some dipshit dad sued the Tribe because his dipshit kid crashed and hurt himself. Of course he had to blame SOMEONE except his stupid kid who couldn't ride properly.

Thanks, assholes!

Point #2: the town of Silverton CO has BANNED SxSs in town except along one side street with a 15 mph speed limit. Wanna guess why?

(On that topic, there was plenty of talk of banning SxS here in the NF during the creation of the new "NFS movement plan", wanna guess why? And Moab is about to lose 1/2 of its OHV areas, wanna guess why? Hint...........it all starts with "SIDE")

Thanks, assholes!

Point #3: eMTBs are banned from every regional park and preserve around here, north-east of Phoenix....wanna guess why?

Point #4: dirtbiking went on life support when 4 strokes became the thing. Talk to people who have been in the industry 20 or 30 years.........the bikes are simply too expensive. A Euro 450 is now $12K OTD, give or take. Yamaha or Honda, not much less. You CAN buy the cheap stuff, green or yellow, but you get what you pay for. What will these e-bikes cost? I haven't seen even a HINT about pricing.......but a case of PBR says 12K +.

Point #5: despite EVs having been around for almost (more than?) a decade, the battery issues have not been solved. Hell....not even STARTED to be solved, nobody is thinking ahead. Mainly, the materials to MAKE billions of them (limited supply, in inaccessible places like Congo) but more importantly, what happens to them when they die? That's an awful lot of TOXIC hazardous waste.....so much for "green" eh? Those batteries are no less toxic than nuclear waste.

Point #6: for those who preach "green" e-bike rhetoric..........visualize the MX pits of the future..........500 generators running full blast all day.......can you hear the noise level, can you see the cloud of smoke rising above the track? Or do you think your local track in Shitsville, Arkansaw is going to install 300 chargers in the pits? WHAHAHAHAA
Then throw away your toxic dead batteries in the dumpster............GREEN GREEN baby!

Point #7: if a 60 HP 450 dirtbike tears up trails, what will an 80 HP e-bike do? Will the rangers say it's OK, because it's "green"?

CAVEAT: I'm not ANTI electrical anything, just coldly practical. I'm about to go solar at my house, but EVs of any kind that are as capable as ICE vehicles of any kind are many years away. In cities? Very useful. Anything beyond that, pretty much useless. How long will an eD10 Cat run on a charge? How many amps required to charge that big boy to 100%? Way out in the boonies, building a road? Good luck wi' dat!

THE biggest threat to our sport is the invasion of riding areas by MORONS who don't understand the concept of riding responsibly, because they can now be an instant MTBer or desert racer. I ask again....what's the diffs between an eMTB and an e-dirtbike? And do you think MX and offroad/trails face different threats?

E-bikes (and SxSs) suck a lot of irresponsible assholes into the 2-wheeled sports, and it will end up backfiring, watch and see. Be careful what you wish for.

If MX/SX goes full E, I'll find something else to do and watch, after 42 years of riding. Go watch an "E-GP" and see how "EXCITING" that is........like watching paint dry. At least you can follow conversations in the stands while the pack races by Laughing

1:15 - big shit eating grin on my face

1:35 - holy shit man

So clearly he is happy he is riding a so called "green" bike. It is all political; has nothing to do with the performance of the bike.

5:23 - how reactive the bike is in the air. But who wants that? Most people prefer to go over the bars.

11:03 - the bike corners really well ... i was able to carry my momentum. It corners like a 125 but out of the turn accelerates faster than a 450. That isn't really an improvement though -- it's useless. Gimme something that corners like a 450 and accelerates like a 125.

And all this other stupid crap like being able to hear when your tires break traction. How useless is that?

It all politics man.

Didn‘t know electric bikes did that…

I love my 125, but damn a bike like the Stark is going to be so much nicer to ride. No vibration, no fanning the clutch or shifting gears, perfect power delivery, consistent handling etc..

No shifting, no clutch is a perk to you? Some of us actually ride to challenge ourselves and enjoy fanning a clutch, gear selection, and the metal and physical challenge such things require. Would you also choose a scooter over a skateboard? Without a clutch and the gyrating effect of the motor it’s going to become much more sensitive to “corrections” in the air, which is discussed in some of the reviews of the stark.

And the noise aspect will have absolutely zero impact on anything, you still will only be allowed to ride them where ICE bikes are allowed. You will not see new tracks opening, no new trails or trailheads closer to town. You will not be allowed on mtb trails. If anything it’s going to create MORE user conflicts between user groups as we’re already seeing with electric assist mtb’s(which aren’t allowed on most mtb trails). In my life time I’ve yet to experience a track closed down because of noise. Zoning, dust control and infrastructure wear is what does it. The whole E-mx bike will change the sport is just a pipe dream, you’re still going to be riding a dirt bike and have the same social label you’ve always had.
I know noise has been a big issue with several nor Cal tracks too
I'm all for electric bikes, but let's not act like they're the only way to combat noise issues at tracks... I have come up on hikers with dogs that didn't know I was coming until I was within 25 ft of them.

The supreme irony............I saw a youtube local news clip a few days ago, some 72-year old geezer was interviewed about his new sport, MTBing. On an e-bike, of course. He was getting more exercise than playing bingo, and he was very happy with it. However......he was upset about all the areas he was NOT allowed to ride, THAT HE HAD BEEN REPSONSIBLE FOR CLOSING TO MOTORISED BIKES BEFORE HE RETIRED Laughing .Laughing

Turns out he had been some kind of city councilman or supervisor or something, and he had instituted bans on riding in many areas.....now he's whining about it.

HYPOCRITE!!

Most people miss the point: it's not about the MODE of propulsion, it's about bikes BEING THERE period. Attracting large numbers of noobs with ebikes will undo the decades of educational efforts by many, many organizations and individuals to combat the closing of riding areas and tracks. The "no noise complaints" argument is only half valid.

For a group that is always wanting the newest gear, the trick stuff for their bikes , etc. It's so strange to see so many people be so worked up about another step of evolution. All it took for me to be hooked on electric power was a few rides in and on quick electric vehicles. A scooter, golf cart, EMTB and then Tesla. each one was not the best version of the product. But the feel of the instant power. The torque , the smoothness. The people that do not like riding E MX bikes can stick to their gas bikes like now with 2 and 4 strokes. So why so mad??? only thing I can think of is deep down they know its going to be better. I could see it being better , or not. But I'm happy for the possibilities that Electric can bring.

I do agree on the lots of new riders being a potential disaster . I don't see it being as attractive as an Emtb or SXS to a totally new to riding person. You'll still have the danger element. I have a SXS and I aggree that many of the people that are out on the public lands should not be driving how they drive. I have only used mine on private land and plan on using it on closed courses only. A sxs with a roll cage makes people think they can't get hurt. As much as I love my SXS I can see how they are causing a lot of trouble. But I can not see how the Stark is political in any way if it is the best performing motocross bike ,, like they want to make it be. If it out performs the gas bikes then wouldn't that be evolution? You could say that 4 strokes were political too then. I remember when I first got a CRF450 there was all kinds of talk of banning 2 strokes . That didn't happen. Nobody is going to come take you gas bikes away, nobody came and took your 2 strokes away! They are out in lower numbers because people buy more 4 strokes. I personally prefer the sound of a crisp CR 250 2 stroke to pretty much any 4 stroke. I have not heard many 4 strokes that make me think " That bike sounds so good" but many 2 strokes give me that feeling. I can see the argument that E cars could be political and somewhat forced . But there are too many people that do not want to give up their gas and oil powered vehicles. To much money to be made, for a total ban to take place. I don't understand why every post about an electric bike has to turn into this. If you don't like them, don't ride one . Keep your gas bikes. Wasn't this post started to talk about ways of charging while at the track? And I do not believe that Stark is claiming that their bike is green. They have said they are working on making parts like the plastic be more environmentally friendly . But that is for the future and would not be limited to just electric vehicles. They have said many times that they want to make THE BEST Motocross bike . and make it electric. Not make the best electric motocross bike. From a performance point of view, on a small vehicle like a dirtbike that only needs a small range relative to cars and trucks. I think that electric has the potential to be much better performing . You have 100% of the torque available the second you crack the throttle , and if you wanted one to be , you could make it so violent and accelerate harder than any other bike , so much so that a CR500 would seem mild. Or you can turn it down. so much tunability in the way the power hits, the way it rolls when off the throttle. Look at the fastest Hyper cars and most will have some sort of electric motor on them. The only people making this political are the people saying its political. I think that most of the Pro E MX bike people are excited for the performance potential and not trying to save the world by riding a dirtbike

All you have to do is bring a can of energy-infused liquid to the track with you, and it takes less than 1 minute to completely re-energize the motorcycle for your next ride.

Does this kind of bike make no noise so that not every f..king track gets closed or is just open for 2h a week and I can ride it pretty much anywhere? Is it much easier to ride because you can tune the power to how you like and has no clutch or gears. Does it need almost no maintenance…..
If you’re talking about a bicycle than YES. Enjoy!

You forgot about coal.

Or converting those coal-burning engines to burn plastic.

Or, just dump used motor oil in the river, rather than ride. You'd probably enjoy that more.

You sure? Here, in good old Germany on average over 40% of electricity comes from renewable sources. The house I live in is powered by solar on the roof and a battery in the cellar. So when my Stark‘s delivered next year, it’s gonna be charged green.

Sound barriers will be removed from around the track and relocated surrounding the pits.

Yes, but Germany has an energy crisis in reality and can't rely on renewable energy, thus looking at nuclear again and of course natural gas. Your panels are not very efficient and in fact the return on energy vs. the input required makes them a net loss vs. burning coal or gas. And then what to do with them when they no longer work?

I did see that there is a fusion reactor that Deu might be rolling out. Now we are talking about real green energy!

Bro, I think you need to change your news channel..

Energy crisis? We have the most stable electric grid in the world and the only question there is, is if we put ourselves into a mild energy crisis by abandoning Russian gas or not. It our choice.
The good thing of all that, is that it’s gonna accelerate the change to renewable energies. Germany always had to import oil and gas and to get away from it would mean more independence from Russia and the middle east, which can only be a good thing.

Solar panels need to run between 2 to 4 years to produce the energy that was needed to manufacture them, they last easily 20 - 25 years (lots of real world examples here in Germany) and can be recycled to 95%. There aren’t good arguments against them anymore.

Germany‘s not going back to nuclear and fusion is still a long time away from producing net positive energy (they never account for the energy that’s needed to run the magnetic coils and all the auxiliary components, they just do plasma heating vs. fusion power. Really well researched video here: https://youtu.be/LJ4W1g-6JiY[/url]

It’s gonna be a challenge to go fully renewable, but I hope as an engineer Germany is going to take the challenge and gets moving!

You sure? Here, in good old Germany on average over 40% of electricity comes from renewable sources. The house I live in is powered by solar on the roof and a battery in the cellar. So when my Stark‘s delivered next year, it’s gonna be charged green.
How clean was the lithium mine for your battery or the components for your solar panels?

Come on man....we all know battery internals for EVs comes from Unicorn farts and rainbow mist.

At least you can follow conversations in the stands while the pack races by Laughing

.
You brought up injuries. It won't just be "low skill morons" where those numbers will skyrocket.

How many more deaths and life changing spinal injuries due to an 80+ HP MX bike are we going to see? 450's are are already too powerful for the average rider.

Yawn… the same great argument as always. It’s for sure better than digging up coal and gas and blowing it in the sky.
Do you guys never want anything to change? How did you Yanks get to the moon? Surely not with guys like you..
I’m excited to try something new.

We got to the moon by burning rocket fuel, not by using wind power

What does almost every space appliance use for energy once it's in orbit or beyond?

Imagine the electric cost for the local track owner when 200 racers are re-charging at one time. Add to that a bunch of extension cords plugged into old shotty power plugs with all kinds of energy loss through miles of extension cords running HIGH amperage smart chargers.

I feel like the cost of fuel will be on track owners when these eventually come... And we all know that isnt good.

Can we chit and chat about that?

I‘d agree that it would take a big invest in infrastructure to have tracks with chargers.

However, where’s the problem of charging a good amount of money form guys with electric dirt bikes? They don’t need gas, oil or air filters at the track, so they could at least give that amount to the track owner for charging.

In Europe I usually pay around 25€ of track fee. I‘d be fine to double that to charge my bike in between motos and for the next day.

If we fix the noise issue, the douchebags will come after dust. If we fix noise and dust, they will come after the water use. If we fix the noise, dust, and use reclaimed water non-potable, they will find something else to come after us for - like soil erosion, or destroying plant matter, or some protected beetle. The issue isn't necessarily in what noise, dust, or water problem exists. Its that there is a certain percentage of people that don't want us doing what we love to do. And quite frankly, I hate those people. And I realize hate is a strong word. Sometimes its an accurate word to use. Just being straight up.
I’ve tried, and failed miserably, to drive this point home to people on here.

Like many other things, won’t know good ice is until it’s gone.

I don’t give a shit, the moment E bikes takeover Im out. I’ll find some other sport because dirt bikes have and always will be about the sound, smell, and feel of revving out a bike to clear a jump impressing the local track slut who had too many Xanax and Jack n cokes.

Electric bikes remind me of a kid on a scooter with a street bike helmet and flag. May as well have one of those squeeze horns on it. “Did you see me rip that turn and pin it to clear that table? Dude I was wrapped out going zzzzxxinnnnggggg” probably 80 mph but I don’t know, it doesn’t have gears to shift
