Why do most racers go get all the aftermarket parts and mods they can get?

I have done some basic stuff to mine, but mostly stock, I have never thought boy if I had a better bike I could have beat that guy.

Some people think…boy I like this bike but it sure would look cool with this or that on it. People like buying stuff for their hobby. Leave it at that.

I bought a full system and never once did I buy it for the performance aspect of it. It looks cool, sounds great/quiet and as a spark arrestor.

On my bike, the aftermarket parts are to make it work better for my needs. I put a oversize tank on it with dry break due to racing GNCC events. I put bark busters on for the same reason. I run aftermarket bars and bar mounts because they're more comfortable for me. Aftermarket clutch perch and lever to reduce the likelihood of breakage, and easier pull than stock. Got the suspension sprung and valved for me because stock was painfully soft for my weight and ability. (Mostly my weight).

I get tuning and customizing. but some seem to over do it for the level they are at. Some think adding more performance = faster,

Fast pros have won many races on stock bikes when they was in a pinch.

Every weekend there are fast kids riding 85s faster than me on my 450. Granted, I'm getting older now, and all that torque to go along with great reliability of the 450 sure is nice. But I've never thought I needed more power to go faster. In all honesty, I was faster on a 250F - not that I was ever fast. At the end of the day, who freakin cares. I'm not going pro and who am I trying to impress?? I do it for fun as do 99% of the people out there.

People spending money on after market parts is GOOD for the sport. Want to spend $1K on a full exhaust system for an extra Hp gain, have at it! Good for the sport.

I like to make my bike my own - sure, I’m not fast enough to need the cool stuff, but I don’t want my bike to be the same as everyone else’s either.

I mostly spend money on suspension and gear. I am picky about suspension and I like to have fresh gear and the best helmets. It’s not about need. No one needs to ride dirt bikes. We do it for fun.

Who? You've got everyone in this thread telling you they do it because they like tricking out their bike. And if someone does think having a faster bike makes them a better ride what do you care?

Bikes are about tinkering and making adjustments to what makes you feel super comfortable for riding and enjoying yourself.

That’s why I buy aftermarket parts and upgrade things, more so for myself and enjoyment… Not really for the performance gain.. the the performance gain is a bonus for me personally.

It’s all highly subjective….. Now an industry that chaps my ass with upgrades is MTN bikes (but that’s a whole other subject)

Mostly because when you look into the garage. You like. That bike sick. But I feel with most parts. Go to suit to the bike to you and your style.

I’ve got a lot of expensive and completely unnecessary things on the bike I’m building right now because I think it looks bitchin and that makes me happy. It has absolutely nothing to do with making me go faster on a track.

I was actually talking to my best friend about this the other night. When I was young and fast I had a worn out stock bike. Now I’m older and slow with a bitchin bike. I was happy then and I’m happy now. All for different reasons.

Agreed with the 2 strokes you had throw some mods on it to hang. If I got a new 450 tomorrow, the only two things I would do is get the suspension done for my weight and style. The other would be Renthal fatty bars and high rise triple clamps. Done. Done the road some new plastics and graphics. That would be it.
Very few people would actual need to add more power to a 450, if top pros are detuning them. Why are weekend warriors throwing on all these expensive mods, do you really need a $1200 exhaust?

Some it’s looks, weight, performance, comfort.

At the end, who cares? You only live once and motocross is less expensive than car racing 🤷‍♂️

I mean especially with how people feel about 450s, I feel like the only who’s thinking, “ she could pick up a little better down low and carry it past mid up top a little better. I wonder what maps, porting and a nice cam would do?”

When I first got into it I put all the stupid shit on my bikes. Anodized bling, exhaust, etc. I rarely raced and cared more about how my bike looked. I race way more now and do things that focus on comfort, bike longevity, and safety. (Suspension, skid plate, ARC levers, best gear etc.) I still keep my stuff nice but mostly stock now. I do get a chuckle out of the all show/no go bikes now though. Been there done that. At least they’re having fun.

The 19kx450 i bought came with several thousand dollars in aftermarket parts and they literally do not do anyrhing for me speed wise. Ill have to have the suspension done to have a fighting chance lol

Get your suspension dialed in and your preferred bar bend and you should be good. Full exhaust isn’t worth the money

There are pros and cons to getting older. The cons include but are not limited to: not being as fast and hurting more when you go down.

Pros include being able to afford cool shit to add to the hobby that I love. I say enjoy the hobby however you can. Now you aren't going to catch me with some replica bike or something like companies have done, but I'm dang sure going to enjoy making my bike my own. Its part of the fun!

I think most motorsports enthusiasts are gearheads that like both the competition and the machine itself. Otherwise, they'd probably be participating in a non-motor sport.

And all gearheads appreciate a nice piece of kit.

I see as much blinky bling on the 20-somethings' bikes as I do on the 40-somethings.

Matter of fact, the 20-something usually also has a lifted diesel with more bling, whereas the vet will have a more practical hauler.

I don't hold bling against anybody. I do snicker a bit if they're a spode, but we're all gearheads.
