This past weekend in Ohio-(plus more I am not aware of..) Grears Open riding Saturday, Vintage Race Sunday, East Fork Race, Malvern Battle Round race, RT62 open riding all weekend, Briarcliff open riding Sunday. Cant beat the riding from late April until late October, but the Winter time blows..

With the way some of the winters have been in SE Michigan the last few years we have ridden year round on my buddies sand track. Also some other tracks have opened and ran as well during winter months, not common but it happens lol. For real tho I lived in other areas of the country and the moto scene in Michigan is one of the best, there are 10 tracks with 2 hours or less, 3-3.5 hours and include red bud and Ironman in indiana. Every place in the country has its pluses and minuses but if you like sand southern Michigan is the ticket for sure.

I was about to throw some pics up from this weekend, but I think I’m going to just start doing the “this place sucks, don’t come here”. 😉

I was thinking about starting a thread like this recently. Is there any better moto scene than SoCal? And if so, where? I know Texas has a lot of good tracks and good weather, and that’s the only other place that comes to mind. Does Florida have many public tracks? Obviously the scene here isn’t what it used to be but it’s still pretty good. Thankful to have 6-7 awesome tracks within an hour and one decent race series

I guess you could argue that the dirt in southern WA is ok. The rest of the state is a gravel pit though.

Red Bug 1 hour 45 minutes
South Central, Buffalo Creek and Athens 2 hours
Freestone 2 hours 45 minutes
Dallas tracks are 3 hours

Upper peninsula-Up Mi. You can buy a house for 50-60k and some land is cheap. Make your own sand track. District 16 is Wi. And the UP Mi., you can race 3 times a week every other week, was every week. Live in the UP, you can race in Canada also. Plus district 16 has a 125 class and a 2-st class. In the winter ride in Florida. That would be the cheapest way to , ride and race a lot.

Why is Texas scene terrible?

Austin has Murphy’s, spoaks, lone star Mx

San Antonio has cycle ranch

So to be worth it to ride while living in Houston you have to go to Austin or San Antonio for a decent track

And Dallas tracks are hit or miss on being open it seems like , most tracks there I wouldn’t return to due to what they call “prepped” practice
Sorry but I have to disagree with this. I've lived in the DFW area now for over 5 years and I think the moto scene is great here. There are plenty of tracks on any given w/e to choose from and I ride most w/e's. In the summer there are tracks with Tuesday, Thursday and Friday night practice sessions in addition to Saturday and Sunday. And there's only been 1 track in my 5 years here that I've been to that did a bad job prepping and it was only on 1 of the tracks that this place has (the other track was great). Year around riding, lots of training options and lots of tracks. DFW might not be the best but it's pretty good.

I completely agree. I moved up here from the Central Coast where all we had at the time was Zaca Station and a couple private tracks. There's lots of places within striking distance from Sacramento, and I can ride my KLR650 all year on the street and in the mountains. I love it here.
Central Coast has so much open land. All those grassy hills through the oak trees look like they'd be a lot of fun to ride. It's a shame that so little of it is available for MX or trail riding.

I live in New Zealand, try and make it to USA, mainly SOCAL once a year. (Other than this year due to travel restrictions)
It has to be Southern California, you have a choice of many tracks, once you get done riding you can always watch the pro’s and privateers practise.
So many bike shops and other moto related companies to fill in your time. Weather is alway good.

I’m putting another vote for Michigan in the spring(when it’s not raining), summer, and fall. You can ride up through nov/Dec there. Also, they have the best trail system if you want to off-road. I lived out west for a while and the dirt out there is terrible, plus summertime heat is brutal. I’m in Illinois and it’s not terrible. Close enough to west side of Michigan though so I’ll take it.

I would put DFW right behind SoCal, from the center of DFW you can hit about 8 quality tracks with in a 90 min drive, and maybe another dozen lesser tracks and trail type places. There is a huge moto scene in DFW, it does not stick out as much mainly because there is a lot of other things to do. The only down side is the weather, you never really know what the conditions will be unless its summer then its really hot with high humidity.

Don't sleep on NY. Our dirt is spotty, some spots are like riding a gravel driveway (looking at you Diamondback and Broome Tioga), but we have a little of everything. There is a pretty big moto scene with 6 districts/promoters (D3, MSC, Empire, USMX, WNYMA, and D34) and something like 34 tracks in the state. I have 20+ within 3 hours of my house. I can choose 3-4 Saturday open practices and Sunday races on nearly any weekend, and have 4 weekday practice tracks to choose from after work.

I grew up downstate and there aren't many tracks left down there, but once you head west there are some world class tracks. I highly recommend Area 51, High Voltage, Palmyra aka Hogback Hill, and Pavilion.

Michigan is ok for motocross. But to be honest as someone who has lived here all my life, the tracks have lost their fun factor mainly due to track owners dumbing them down in the name of "safety." Martin MX Park used to be pretty gnarly and fun with previous owners. Nowadays, it feels like a corners track with just a couple of tabletops. Used to have an old-school six-pack of doubles and now they dumbed that down to a small roller double and a weird roller triple. Big Air Motocross took out a lot of its previous features and changed the track layout which flows like a clogged drain. Grattan MX is super fun but has one practice a year and maybe two race weekends if they don't get rained out. Their main focus is the road racing course for superbikes, karts, and car guys. Valley Mx again super fun track with some big boy jumps and elevation changes. Same problem as Grattan MX. Hardly ever has practice days and only open on race weekends. Even Red Bud has been dumbed down as well. The other tracks on the west side like Portland Trail Riders and Battlecreek MX are cool and more traditional old-school MX tracks, but are club run and owned. Again, hardly ever open except for race weekends or "members only" practice days. On a given weekend you might only have maybe two options on where you can ride depending on where you live. There is some ruling in the AMA that you can't have two tracks racing/practicing on the same weekend within a 100mi radius. Since most of the west side tracks are within 1/2 hour 45min of each other, that limits things. We have a lot of tracks, but they are hardly ever open except for the few strictly practice-only tracks that the AMA rule doesn't apply to. It would be fun for someone new to the state for maybe a year or two, but after that, it gets repetitive and boring riding the same lines, same dirt, and same tracks week in and week out. Lots of cool private tracks sprinkled across the state. The only issue is unless you are in the cool club or "In the know" with the owner, most of these are not accessible for the average guy.

Side story, some buddies and I got tired of riding the same tracks one year. The farmer my buddies worked for who raced MX gave us an old alfalfa acreage that he was turning over to plant other things and wouldn't be used for the year. He gave us a D9 Cat Dozer to use that was already on the acreage plowing and tilling the field. Basically said have at it. We had two 90ft uphill step-ups, ski jumps, a six-pack of doubles, big tables. Basically our dream track. After that year we had to tear it down, but I still have a picture of the face of the wall for one of the 90ft uphill faces that shot you into the atmosphere. Basically, a pair of small Loracco's Leaps. The link below shows the face at the bottom of one of the hills.

https://scontent-ort2-1.xx.fbcdn.net/v/t31.18172-8/10542063_10152834668…

As far as racing, if you are a C-rider racing is fun as you are likely to have a full gate (30+ dudes), but if you race A or B anything chances are you are going to be racing either yourself or maybe a handful of riders. The only time A or B class is somewhat populated is when a "Money-moto" is running that day and the track requires you to run an additional class on top of the money moto class.
Honestly, GNCC and Harescramble numbers are starting to increase and more MX guys are drifting to trail riding and woods racing. Myself included. Sprint enduro has been the hot new thing here in Michigan.

Winter lasts about 3-4 months December - March. Some years we have ridden through the whole year due to mild winter. But when we have a real Michigan winter most dudes travel south to Monster Mountain or Ram Jam Indoor. Or buy a snowmobile and ride that. Those who can't travel get a girlfriend for the winter to keep them busy as a last resort hahaha

Anywhere in Michigan in the lower peninsula really gives you access to badass tracks. The thing is the racing culture in Michigan. We have two track running races on any given weekend. Both track will have decent turnouts in all classes. On top of that there will be any given between 5-7 really good practice tracks running every weekend. I like to go south to the Carolinas in the winter to ride and dont get me wrong its great down there but there isnt much going on for MX racing. Saw awhile ago a race that was held at GTR and there was like maybe 120 total rider entries. In D14 mx we will have two tracks racing most of the time less than two hours apart and each track will have on the low end 300 entries.

It seems to me that Ideal for an average Mx rider would be Florida in the winter and Michigan in the summer. but I like sand tracks and both provide that as well as great weather for the time of year 60-80 Year round!
what can beat that combo??

Yeah Texas sucks. That's why half the trucks in the pits have Cali license plates. Don't come here. It's horrible.

NorCal is awesome except for cost of living. There are a lot of tracks in the Sacramento area (I can think of 5 public tracks), many nearby options for non-moto fitness work (MTB especially), and SoCal isn't that far away. All down the Valley are tracks too - Diablo, Oatfield, Club Moto, DT-1 MX Park, and more. The OTHG has 4 CA chapters and run a 10 month series that's really well managed. The Sierras have lots of trail riding if that's your thing. You can ride street all year too - weather is good enough. Traffic sucks in most of CA but you can lane split.

Hammer 663s

Just within 39 min of Sacramento you have Hangtown, MMX (3 tracks there) , E-street (2 tracks) Riverfront MX, mammoth bar, Argyle, Livermore. NorCal has a few really sick hidden gems too which I’d rather not name.

I have lived in the East Bay (NorCal), Temecula, and the northeast (NYC and Philly).

Temecula, tons of tracks close. Glen Helen, Cahuilla, sand tracks like Nuevo in the winter. Pretty awesome. Traffic sucks.

NorCal, bit more spread out but the tracks are cool. I grew up riding club moto, hangtown, e street, hollister, Oatfield.

Northeast / Philly. Hear me out. It’s cold in the winter. Tracks are far away from each other. But my best days riding have been here. Southwick, Budds Creek, NJ sand. I don’t ride a ton, and don’t mind a drive. The tracks up in Maine / Vermont / New Hampshire are sweet, as are the tracks south of here.

So, if you want optimize riding a lot, I think CA is the way to go. NorCal is a bit chiller, but if you live in Temecula you can ride 7 days a week.

But if you are looking for the absolute best tracks and scenery, you can’t beat the northeast.

You need a Real good set of wheels to travel in the northeast .  Do you know what tracks or how far Tomahawk track is from Altoona ?  The whole st of Pa. Is beautiful with all the big hills , mtns and valleys. Especially Altoona to Somerset.  I,ve been in most of the towns in Pa. Had a terminal in Etown.  Southern Wi. The area of Beloit is a good location to hit numerous tracks in northern iL.  A little bit of a drive to hit sand tracks in Wi. But it’s flat easy driving. Aztalan track is close a lot of comp there.  Millville is quite a drive but it’s easy interstate travel. The jobs pay more on the bottom of the state and there’s some Real nice lakes. Ltm is a bit of a drive 1,300 + riders there.

Definitely Guam. How many tracks in the US have their own castle?
And if you’re good there’s a chance to make the MXdN team.
