Didn't RC drop down at the one race to have the record of most 125 wins? If we are excluding Stew, RC has to be number 1 (2)

So many people saying Bubba, I had to go back and see if the OP edited his post to exclude him. Nope, said it in the second sentence.

My podium:
1) RC
2) Bomber
3) Lammy

Honorable mentions: O' Show, Wardy & Pastrana

I’ve seen them all and raced 2 of them, the top 5:

1 Stewy
2 Mark Barnett
3 Broc Glover
4 RC
5 could go to several guys, but I’d say O’mara or Henry.

Emig was pretty good . One title but quite a few wins and some good performances in the MXdN.

Smoked by Malin. Granted it was just his day to shine.
Wasn't there a protest to check Tortelli's engine size at an Mxdn once.
Chiodi was a great 125 rider

Yeah Malin was on fire that day. Not sure on the Tortelli thing. And yes Chiodi definitely in the conversation.

Yes- forgot about Chiodi- that little guy won lots.
Also Puzar- he stepped up and down from 125cc / 250cc and won the 125 again in the later years on the TM if my memory serves me correctly.

Chiodi and Pizar were both seriously fast.

By no means greatest, but a side shout out to Brett Metcalfe for being the last rider to forfeit 2 strokes for 4 in the small bore division. Up the 1 dinger!

Can’t believe it took until page 2 before he was mentioned.

I,ll just list the 90,s. Guy cooper, La Rocco, Mx kied, Henry 90-94 , 91 he lead Millville for 3 laps on a yz slowest bike ever. Emig had great style on a 125, lamson the best 125 specialist, Swink, McGrath, L.ward, Schmidt, Reynard 98 unadilla, Millville awesome. RC of course, m. Craig, c.Johnson, Broc Sellards, vohland, Brown another rider like Lamson they rode a 125 perfectly. Bayle bit over rated on a 125, late 90,s riders would handle him, better big bike guy. Huffman best style way smoother than bayle. In a hot muggy race I pick Emig or Huffman. Pastrana is the most fun to watch ever. Many more in the USA. Europe is stacked in the 90,s Dutch, Italian alone too many to list. Everts, chiodi 3 time , puzar 95 champ on a Honda perfect riding to beat chiodi. Eric eggins, Torteli didn,t get protested that was chiodi on a husky. Torteli almost swept the series, dnf. Trampus-Chad Parker, Langston. Too tired to think

For those that didn’t see it Barnett was a serious bad ass on a 125. Relentless

My pick would be Marty Smith but it’s a vote from the heart. He was as big as you could get in the 70s and his Red Honda was too trick.

IIRC Mike Brown also "Let RC Bye" to allow him to get the record.

Bomber and Lammy are similar to me, legendary champs who ground it out. Fast as but really workmen too. Special mention to Johnny and Henry too.

Speed?

Stewart has the most national wins right, but only two titles. RC has one or maybe a few less wins but 3 straight titles and I believe a perfect SX East season? 2nd the other one to Timmy and then moved up a year earlier than he should have.

I'd take RC, if for nothing else that they're that close, I value titles more and ultimately RC beat James on the bigger bike, so if I had to be he'd have done it there too.

Him and Dogger are similar – almost what ifs that ultimately made you hope because of what they did on the little bikes. Skills for sure, but a bit light on results to challenge the rest.

Puzar won the 95 world title on a Honda, after he won in 90 the 250 title on a Chestefield Zook. The TM years were around 98/99 i think and he was still very competative

My random pick's are RC, Bomber, Lamson( he actually won a moto on a 125 in the MXON in Spain), Chiodi (3 times in a row world champ, wich 2 times on a Husky), Tortelli, Rahier, Everts (both), Dave Strijbos (1 world title and many 2nd places behind JMB, Albertijn,John v/d Berk, Vehkonen), JMB offcourse and many more guys who were forced to ride 250 4 strokes when they came up.

JMB was great but no way is he the best 125 rider. Bubba would chew him up and spit him out. For that matter I think King Kenny Roberts might be a better all around motorcyclist imho Wink

Most people will automatically say Stewart because he was sensational to watch and also because maybe they’re not old enough to have seen some of the earlier riders mentioned above.

But if you’re excluding Stew, for me it’s Steve Lamson, a 125 specialist with a fluid technique that was poetry in motion, he was all about momentum. The only rider ever to win a MXdN moto outright on a 125.

RC and Barnett are also in the same conversation.

It’s such a shame that watching 125’s ridden by elite specialists on a motocross track, is now a memory shelved in the halls of nostalgia.
I've seen them all (at least those who raced on U.S. soil) since the mid seventies. Bomber would be second to James and then it gets crowded from there. No one is mentioning Hannah and he was damn good on a 125.

Good call. What a freak. Especially since it seemed like he often carried a little weight compared to his comp.

Yes- you are correct- I thought Puzar won on the TM but he came 2nd and 3rd on it -I think was 97 and 98.
As you say Harry Everts was also pretty good- surprised he hasn't been mentioned more, won title 3 times on 125. Strange how good the Belgians were on the little bikes- Rahier, Everts, Geboers- usually Suzukis.

Lamson definitely needs a mention
Tortelli too, won nearly all the gps 96

Going with RC and the Bomber. Because I’m old enough to sometimes remember
