Camping vs Hotel

I have a 21ft toy hauler and love it. My F-150 pulls it just fine. I don’t have to wake up early to drive to the track in the morning. Besides, any hotel nice enough that I’d want to stay there would be tough to sneak a bike in.

Except for a 2 year window I have had trailers since 1992. They are a part of my lifestyle and we use the trailer for more than just racing. It's hard for people for some people to imagine a weekend in the desert with hotels 20 miles away and the whole experience of hanging with friends and family. I did do a hotel once for a 2 day event and hated it. I keep my trailer on my property and can dump the tanks too. I broke my foot pretty good in 2008 so being able to to come home and park it before the trip to the hospital was convenient.

I like to camp till I’m next to the dude who runs his generator all night. It’s also a lot of work though... usually two full nights after work getting everything loaded up..

As I've gotten older, camping is the way. Being able to sleep in just a little more in the morning, have my own bathroom during the day, etc is priceless.

Also I big factor is where will you have to store it? I have friends that live in neighborhoods where they cannot keep their camper at home. That is a big pain. Being able to keep my camper at my house, have full hookup and sewer dump right there is a huge convenience.

Camping at the track is best. I always like waking up to the sounds of the cat working the track. Seeing the place come alive and getting signed up early.

You don't need a 32' 5th wheel toy hauler to camp with. A 20' camper and bike in the bed. For me I don't worry about things like wearing out my truck. That would be why is own a truck.

If you have to worry about wearing out a truck, it's not a real truck.

I do. And I built a 50’ RV pad, too. It’s pretty easy to do when it’s a “new build”.

If you have something to prove about the fortitude of your truck you might have a small penis. Hahahaha just kidding, don't ban me.

I’ve been living in a travel trailer for nine months, with lots of track visits and woods rides. It’s got AC, heater, shower, dinette, fridge, tv etc. I like to grab a hotel every few weeks. So if you have the trailer at least you have options. Having fridge, bathroom and place to change at the track is great. Especially if you a kid around- easier to sit her down and feed her etc.

I think the best route is an RV and a cargo trailer. Have a friend that just went this route and it seems to be a pretty good setup.

When we built our house 1st thing we looked at was the HOA rules to make sure parking a Box Van/trailer/RV in the backyard was allowed.

I usually camp out at the track in a tent the night before the race. Picked up a predator generator off marketplace for $250 and run a portable heater inside the tent during winter and a a/c in the summer. Not the most luxurious set up at all but my wallet says no to a camper and I still prefer to stay out at the track to hang with friends, bbq, and drink.

This is my mock setup for now. Going to tweak things more but looking at a little buddy heater and some sort of portable toilet and sink and it should work for one night stays.

Camp. Always. Tent, van, RV.

I travel for work. Diamond member at a few of the name brand hotels.

Even at the nicest hotel. You never know what dude/dog/big chick/armpit/crotch slept in that bed the night before.

I have to just power through it while working. Never if I have a choice.

You could also set up a critical load center with manual transfer to back up power in your house with the RV genset during outage.

That has nothing to do with a RV dump. Genset it hooked up to breaker box in house.

Whats yall's experience with camping at the track vs getting a hotel near by? I've done both but only did hotels with my dad when I was a kid. It was fun for me staying in a hotel with my dad with both bikes in the room but I don't know if it was a pain in the ass for him.

My wife wants a camper but I don't want to put the wear on my truck and I love my truck too much.

Dear Texan,

Happy Wife, Happy Life.

Get a Toy Hualer and settle this. You can find something that your truck can tow without any harm.

Good Luck and See Ya at the Races!
Toy hauler all the way for us. Light, quiet (when on inverter or 30amp) everything we need . Wake up, coffee, and just focus on race

As someone who has spent 3-6 months a year since 2014 in hotels for work, camper all the way. I've found bedbugs in a hotel that was $150.00 per night. Got them in my old house, took $2500 to get it treated. I check every hotel now, no matter how nice it looks. When you start pulling the sheets and mattress cover off, flipping the chairs, and pulling the bed away from the wall you get to see how "clean" they really are.

I did the toyhauler/ camp at the track for years. Now I have a van, travel a lot and use points for free hotel stays. I prefer the hotel, personally. But my son is older and doesn't need the social aspect of playing after racing either. Built some good friendships camping at the track that we would've missed otherwise.

Camp at the track. Doesn't get more vet racer than slamming beers all night and then racing motos the next day!

Camping all the way. You are going to create memories you will remember forever. Looking back on my career, I remember very few races but I sure have great memories about traveling and camping at the track.

It’s funny that at the time the racing seemed like the most important or would be the most memorable thing. Not even close. The race is just the destination. The traveling, camping, bench racing, yeah even dumping the tanks in freezing rain at 2am, that’s the journey. And I wouldn’t trade any of it for the hotel and crappy continental breakfasts.

If you have kids then the camping is the way to go. You will create memories that will last long after the race fades.
