All I see is a guy getting ready to go ride a dirt bike with not only adequate, but good quality safety gear.
What am I missing here?

Wear it. Plus it’s definitely not some off the shelf gear I’m sure it’s customized specifically for his liking and body fit.

Just to play devils advocate to the OP, let’s consider if he did buy and wear a brand from his local shop.

Let’s say he buys fox, and perhaps O’Neal is considering him if whatever team he lands on allows it. Who’s to say the interested party might think, “oh, scratch that, he’s already wearing X brand of gear” or “well how would it look if he chose to buy with his own money some other brand?”

At least if he wears his leftover stuff the industry knows he’s still available.

Ok, I can get on board with that do a degree. I know the industry is petty.

He’s worked with Thor for 2 years, and probably knows the Thor guy on a personal level.

Terrible example, but if I was a top level guy and needed some non-branded AStar boots for a few months (let’s pretend they’re team specific) - I would reach out to Kenny Day and see what we could do. Maybe I’m naive to think he could/should do that with his Thor rider rep?

Interesting that MCR is printing numbers for test guys like Shane and Savatgy. Makes sense. If I was a rider choosing a new team, seeing my number on the bike would raise the appeal.

I doubt it would be his first choice, but with a lot of fast guys looking for rides and a short off-season (assuming SX starts in mid January) I dont think Shane can afford to not at least give MCR a look unless he has another solid offer on the table.

Worst case he signs a 1 year sx only contract with MCR, then looks for a fill in ride for outdoors, or maybe convinces MCR to give some minimal support for outdoors. Then regroup and try to find a more suitable sx/mx deal for 2022.

Even if he had to sit out the MX season next year, MCR puts a good bike on the track, and the best thing Shane could do for his future in the 450 class, is put in a solid showing in SX to prove he isnt just a career 250 guy.

Maybe his contract with his gear brand is still running till 31 December?! That is why you sometimes see riders race their new bikes in the off season supercrosses but still in the old brand of clothes.

MxKing, you’re putting WAY too much thought into this. These guys, especially top level dudes like Shane - really don’t give a shit. This is their job. All the riders I have dealt with for the brand I work with really don’t care about gear the way the average joe does.
