Mine was an 85 yz80 my dad bought at a garage sale. This was in 1995 lol. The bike had no clutch and the idler gear was stripped on the kickstarter. Had to roll start the bike and couldn’t stop without the clutch. We finally got the clutch and kicker fixed and I raced it a handful of times with decent results in the beginner class. Top 5s on a 20 kid gate in 80 beginner. I eventually grenaded it and my dad bought me a brand new 96 yz80. That was a game changer. Won my first race on that bike. After a few more wins it was of to 80 senior to get my ass kicked. Still getting my ass kicked to this day but I definitely wouldn’t trade this sport for anything. The funny thing about it is I was actually a very good baseball player when I got my first bike. I was a starting catcher on a select league team. The moment I started racing I couldn’t care less about baseball and hadn’t played since.
Same here, I was captain of the school football team, got the bike and that was it, all over. I tried a couple of games when I was 17 when they were short of players and was next to useless after 5 years not playing. Wouldn’t change a thing though. Still emtb with my 50-60 year old motocross mates.

Growing up, my dad wouldn’t let me ride or race because he had been involved in the sport since 1967 when he was in college and had seen the kind of damage this sport can do both personally and to his friends and didn’t want to see his son get hurt.

This always frustrated the crap out of me because I went to the races with him most weekends since I was 5 so I had spent a ton of time around racing and bikes and all I wanted to do was be like my dad and ride. Instead I had to stand on the edge of the track and just watch while he got to race. I’d enviously watch as kids my age raced and ran around the pits in racing gear and I had to just play in the dirt.

Then in 2001 my dad got cancer. He suddenly realized that he might not be around too much longer and he didn’t know how much longer he had to spend with his son. This realization made him have a change of heart; suddenly he seemed more open to the idea of letting his son at least ride. I was 12 at the time so the perfect size for an 85 but he thought that was too much bike and I might hurt myself on it so he wanted something a little more mellow. He looked around and talked to his racing buddies and eventually found a TTR125L so he went to go look at it. I stayed home because he said he was just looking so I didn’t really get my hopes up. Well, he comes home and guess what’s in the back of the truck!

My dad fought cancer for a year and a half. During this time he didn’t race for obvious reasons but he was always itching to get back to it. We trail rode together a bunch but for him it just wasn’t the same. Well, after a year and a half he finally beat cancer. He quickly returned to racing and this time he decided to let me join him. Racing a TTR125 in the 125 class was pretty brutal but for me it was enough to get on the track. I did that for a couple years before I was way too big for that thing so he bought me a YZ125. I raced that thing for a number of years. We don’t race anymore but we still ride together fairly often.
Thats amazing- your Pops sounds one damn cool man!
I can understand how he was worried you could get hurt- I think if I had a son I wouldn't want him to race either. Boy though- I bet that was kind of frustrating for you being young and not being able to when you saw your Pops doing it.
Anyway all well that ends well and you did get to race!
Credit to your Dad for beating the big 'C'- thats the very best thing of all!!
He sounds one tough and very caring man.

Super stories and pics in this whole thread! Luvin' it!

Much better ending than I expected. Brought a big smile to my face and made my day !! Great story and congrats for having the type of relationship with your dad that you two can share the same passion .

1981 Yamaha MX100. My dad wouldn't let me get a YZ80 because he said it was way too loud. I had no clue how to shift with a clutch but I taught myself pretty quick.

I started on an early 70's Honda CL100. My brother joined the Navy and I decided that his bike was mine for the taking. I traded that in for a '74 Suzuki TS100. I drove that bike all over North Dallas. That was the beginning of my Suzuki addiction. My first real dirt bike was a '79 RM125. I took it to the former AMA track out I 75 called Rabbit Run. Later, that same brother sold the RM while I was on the west coast and kept the money!

My dad brought a QA50 home from a garage sale for my older brother and me to learn on. The first bike of my own was an MX80 after the salesman convinced my dad a YZ60 was too much bike for an 8yr old. I was mad at first but still had just as much fun on it in the woods behind our neighborhood.

78 or 79 my parents found a 71 Yamaha JT1 for $75; I had half the money and they kicked in the other half. It had been ridden enough to completely wear the knobbies off, but had then been parked long enough for the gas to go bad and the inside of the tank to accumulate a layer of rust.

My dad's mechanical ability was limited to oil changes, spark plugs, etc. So getting the Mini Enduro running was a bit of a challenge. Before the bike was even running, I would coast it down our gravel driveway, push it back up and repeat the process. Considering that I weighed about half of what the bike did, that was quite a workout.

Eventually we got it running, and I had the time of my life on it. Still had the stiffest functional throttle I've ever felt, and I eventually seized it spinning doughnuts in the middle of summer. Dad later took it to the dump. Sad

At some point I'll have another JT1, just to have in the garage and occasionally putt around on.

1979 Kawasaki KD 100. Had a lot of fun on that bike until I started jumping it. Landed like a ton of bricks.

When I was 10 years old my Dad visited a dealer and saw a Honda CR 50 MJ 1983 chassis which should be scrapped because the engine was gone.
He got it for cheap and had to look for an engine. He found a Sachs 504 engine and fitted it into the chassis.
Later when I was a bit more experienced he put a 80cc kit on it.
He sold the bike but two owners later I bought it back.
In the last couple of weeks I rebuilded the bike and now it sits in our living room.

With some help from dad, and the funds from selling my 1998 Yamaha Blaster (which also came from dad), I bought my first dirt bike: a 2004 CR 85 Expert. As a kid that weighed a whopping 85lbs, that bike was an absolute rocket. It never idled and it fouled plugs after every two rides, but it was a blast.

However, if I may break the rules a bit, my first motorized toy was a 1984 ATC70 that was a hand-me-down from my brother. My dad bought it new for my brother (who was 3 years old at the time) for Christmas. I'll never forget riding the pit at Little Mill in Blackwood, NJ (now Trump National Golf Course). My dad eventually sold it for next to nothing at a yard sale some years later - wishing now that we still had it in the family.

He's a pic of me riding it in the snow out front of the house, duct tape seat and all. I had just turned 5 years old.

Sachs and Zundapps were so cool- how unusual to put one in a Honda! Superb!!
On this subject sometimes Sachs engines would also be used in Aspes in the 1970's.

Loving your pic Dropbear of your YZ80 Noguchi- you look one fast rider and that must have been one rare a special bike. That pic on the Noguchi is amazing! You look a pretty talented rider- loving the concentration on your face!

I also had a YZ80, mine was a YZ80B but was totally standard but don't think I would have been nearly as quick as you!

1972 SL70, stripped the lights off of it, added a pipe and was my first race bike.

First race, Austin day track 1974-75?, rubber band start, I am on the last position on the right when the rubber band smacks my helmet, turning it sideways which caused me to loop it almost all the way out (feet dragging).
I got lapped twice by the leader on his big bore XR75 (Bucky Houston) I was always good at sports and never sucked this bad. I was hooked from that day on.

Ha ha, yeah that Noguchi was something else. A bit later we layed the Koni shocks down and fitted a Motoplat ignition. Razor thin mental power band. I did get a YZ C but the Noguchi was faster than anything I rode up til the E model. Wish we’d kept it. I won a Victorian (Australia) championship on that bike in ‘74 and ‘75.

I like when there’s “Story Time” on here. So, what was your first bike?

For my seventh birthday a truck pulled into our driveway with a 1983 DR 100 in the back for me (this was in ‘99).

The light didn’t work, and it only had a front brake. But the real problem was that it was a good six inches too tall for me. To stop, I had to tip over, I couldn’t even touch the ground!

I had some hard crashes (one particular broken collarbone due to the front brake only causing a judo flip off of a little jump).

But you know what? I probably put a thousand hours on there before I moved up to a real bike, and it gave me a life long love of the sport.
I actually have a 1983 dr 100. I’m the second owner, the guy used it on his farm. If you would be interested??

1984 KX80. Worked a paper route and saved up enough to buy it. Think it was around 850$ back in the day. When my Dad brought it back from the shop, he tried to give me a lesson on how to use the clutch. Thinking it was a toy, he gave it a shit load of gas and dropped the clutch. Almost looped the bike out in the driveway. Gave it back to me just shaking his head. I'll never forget that day.

Yes, easy to tell you were very fast just by your look and whole demeanour. Funny a few of the very quick kids here whom I was lucky to race against(well I was in the same race as them!) also had exactly that same sort of look on their faces and style! Really bought back the memory of those happy days.

Thats nuts that your 1974 Noguchi YZ80A was better than the 1975-1977 models even! Like my YZ80B the YZ80A only had the 72cc engine where as the 1976-1977 had 79cc. Yet it was still quicker you say!

Did you ever ride a RM80B 1977? Was the Noguchi quicker than one of those? I had a quick go on one in 1977 and it ripped compared to my 1975 YZ80B, was surprised how it really lit up when it hit the powerband.
I still liked the YZ80B even in 1977, at times I did okay on it and think some of the kids were older than me that I ran with.

Yep, the Noguchi was quicker, if you could keep it singing. I learned to clutch in corners before it was a thing, lol. That is a B it is fitted to but I think the kit would have been the same. The B was released in late ‘74 here as the A wasn’t selling and in stock form was slow. The ‘77 RM I tried in ‘76 when they brought a prototype to Australia. It was good but power was a little weak to me.

My older brother and cousin got mini bikes when I was around 10 or so and I wanted one so bad I rode a step thru Sears until it wouldn't run anymore. I wanted a real bike so bad. Well at 12-13 yrs. old after working 40 hrs. a week for a year in my moms restaurant at $1.65 an hr. My brother and I went looking for a 125 CZ for me and a 250 CZ for him. After getting the runaround from the LA dealers we were on the way back to San Diego and stopped for food in San Clemente ( felling like I'd never get a bike ) As we passed I noticed a small motorcycle shop so we stopped. It was Competition Cycles and Gary Blanda talked to us for an hour and We ended up with 2 72 CZ 250's for $1200 a piece OTD with a trick tank. I don't think I slept much waiting for the bike to arrive then just stared at it for hrs. LOL

This is what it looked like new

Night and day difference between the YZ80B and YZ80C. I did not know it was displacement. The XR75 would beat the YZ80B.

1967 or 68, got a Taco mini bike with the Briggs and Stratton engine, rode the wheels off that thing for years. Then bought a ‘73 Honda Elsinore 250....talk about a step up, LOL!
