Should America not race MXON?

The riders and factory teams that want to go, should go.

It would be interesting to see how many of you guys would agree to spend 10K and go to work for free for four to five weeks all in the name of your country.

I get the flag waving (Go Canada!) and it's a way cool race. I spend my own money to go there for twelve years in a row to report on it. But there are so many things stacked against the USA here that make it tough to go. Win or lose, that doesn't matter but all the things they have to do make it tougher and tougher to win.

Not too mention when they do lose there's a percentage of people that just light them up on social media when they can't overcome all the obstacles and win. Who would want that?

The race doesn't need the USA to be successful but it's not the same. USA has the hammer and should use it a bit to try and ease their costs/burdens.

Don't agree with me? Fine, ask Mitch Payton who was on the show and echoed many of my points.

I would not agree to spending 10K, but I'm not wealthy either. Honestly, it's not even fair to ask us regular Joe types that sort of question. Pretty much everyone here will never be offered the chance and it doesn't matter what we think.

Anyway, Steve, I do get your point, and I think you do have a point.

Here's my thoughts. I think it was 1979. I was just finishing up high school. I remember somebody started a campaign to send a U.S. team over. If you donated, you got a pretty cool t-shirt. I think it was MXA (not an MXA shirt, but a shirt that had riders on it and said something about MXON) but could be mistaken as to who sponsored the campaign. It worked. I got a nifty shirt I wish I still had, and we sent a team.

Why don't we try something like that again? With your voice and audience reach backing it, it could be at least a minor success. These days we can be a lot more creative than a t-shirt too. How about largest donor gets interviewed by you? Or prize packs for donations over such and such an amount? Autographed swag? All sorts of ways to get folks involved.

We all (most of us) say, "Send a team!" OK, talk is cheap. Who's willing to put their money where their mouth is? I'll donate for a t-shirt. Actually, if I had a place to donate I'd do it without getting a shirt. This could be easily made to work with today's electronic reach and quick shipping, but it will take someone with a big voice backing it.

Also, wouldn't funding it by us - the people the riders are representing - make it all the more a team thing? Wouldn't such and action take a lot of pressure off the team - not having to deal with monetary issues?

I don't know. Just food for thought. Go head and rip me up with down votes. Lately I've been craving them.

Also, Steve, are you in Jacksonville for this weekends race?

Edited because since I turned about 55 I can't seem to write a sentence without leaving a word out - not to mention post with clarity.
Whatcha got, Steve? Nuthin?
Matthes isn’t going to reply. He pops in like a hot virgin, shows a little flesh and then leaves.

Don't toot your own horn too much. i will watch it either way. It is the yearly olympics of MX.
It’s still not as good when the USA isn’t there. Everyone wants to see them get beat.

That's an ugly truth, but truth nonetheless. It's America vs everybody else. Always has been. Always will be. One upside is that the victory is extra sweet for us when we do win. A downside is that even 2nd place is heartbreaking, and we better at least podium or we wilk hear all about it every day from everyone. Even from people in countries that we beat. The upside for all mx fans is that as long as America is in it, EVERYONE will be tuned in to see what happens.
It’s funny to me that everyone wants to see America get beat, then revels in it and calls America arrogant.

I say host the race every other year in the USA so the Euros can feel the pinch of the travel equally...or at the very least move the race to right after the last national...not six weeks down the road in the middle of SX prep...

Yep and at Red Bud there were 12 teams that came from countries outside of continental Europe. Little low budget teams like Isreal and Phillipines who have little chance of even making the A final but somehow manage to show up to represent their nation capture the real romance of MXoN. For them just getting there is a result.

For these teams it's a demonstration of their nation's love for the sport.

While we are on the subject can someone in USA tell me what Anderson is like in the the sand. Would like to see him in Assen, the mxon owes him a bit of luck after the last time he came over

Anderson is fast on any surface if he's hell bent to win. He isn't a sand specialist and he isn't a terrible sand rider. He's in between. About like Barcia when Barcia is healthy. Barcia pulled off a third place finish at the 2012 mxon. Assen isn't as narly as Lommel. What is more important is that NOBODY wants to be on the mxon team more than Anderson, and NOBODY wants to win at the mxon more than Anderson. If Anderson is on the mxon team this year, you can bet your ass he will be up in the very front. Maybe not ahead of Herlings or Cairoli, but anyone else he can handle with a good start. Anderson has never even won an ama outdoor overall, yet you saw the smackdown he put on the field in the 2016 mxon. That's just a rider who wanted it that bad and got a holeshot. He's gonna be lethal if he's there. Bet on it. Same for Webb. Webb steps up and gives it all he's got and then some at mxon. He wants to be there and HATED the losses at the two mxon he was in. He's good in sand too. Not Herlings good, but good enough to be top 5 there easy.
Tomac... Tomac wants to be there and learned his lesson after skipping 2017 mxon. He doesn't want that heat, and he does want redemption. If he can go, he WILL GO, despite what some people are saying. He will easily top 5 even with a bad setup and a shitty start. Stamp it. If he finds that "sweet" setting and gets a good start, he could win in Assen. He is that good, but he's only that good when his setting is just right.if it isn't, he is still good enough for a top 3 with a decent start. I'd say Herlings is untouchable at Lommel, but a dialed in Tomac with a good start could run with him at Athens.
Of course some will disagree on parts of this, but that's ok. It's just my opinions based on things I've seen in past mxon races, usgp events, mxgp events, ama Nationals, etc.

I hope Tomac wants to go and get some redemption. If not, I’d love to see Anderson, Osborne and Cianciarulo head over and kick butt. Those are 3 guys with tons of heart and very well could win anywhere in the world.
Anderson wanted to be on the 2016 mxon team and was. He has always been vocal about wanting to race it. Especially after the heartbreaking thing that happened to him and the team at 2016 mxon. He said last year that his goal was to get healed up and back in shape to hopefully get selected for the 2018 mxon team. He stated this and it is well known even though he wasn't able to. LOOK IT UP. Now he's healthy and fit. You think he isn't eager to be on the mxon team in 2019? Lol
Earlier this year, Eli Tomac was on the whiskey throttle show. They asked him if he would race the 2019 mxon in Athens if asked to. He said YES HE WOULD. He said he would like the chance for redemption. He also said he regretted declining to be in the 2017 mxon. He SAID THAT SHIT. LOOK IT UP.
These are facts that you clearly aren't aware of, yet you're telling me I'm saying things I know nothing abOUT. Then you say Anderson rides with heart and can win anywhere, which is basically agreeing with what I said about him.
You agree with my opinion on Anderson, yet dispute well known facts about him and Tomac. Learn some things and know something before telling someone they don't know anything. There is nothing I stated that isn't fact, well known, and proven. STAMP THAT.

It's because of all the years of American mx fans puffing their chest out proclaiming how superior they are and that the GP riders are slow. It went on for years and was endless, just look at what Carlosmacho used to post on here.

You can't be suprised that people then revelled in the US finally getting beat, it was mostly just to see the arrogant fans squirm.

True that. Everts did stay on the pegs and made it look easy. It was impressive. Almost as impressive as Villopoto going 1-1 at an mxon on a 250 against every 250 and 450 GP rider with enough gap in both races to pull off the track and take a relaxing shit without giving up the lead.

Based on Anderson's statements about last year's mxon, and in the two years prior. He has always been eager to race it even though injuries wouldn't allow it in 2017 or 2018. Why would it be different if he's healthy and ready? Its a strong opinion. I know he hasn't publicly stated that he wants to go to Athens. Or at least not that I'm aware of.

There is truth in that. Many Americans did that, but on the flip side...
Many Euros are doing the same thing and have been for quite some time now. It's what people do. Not all Euros do it, and not all Americans did it when we were on top. Eventually the tide will turn and many Americans will want to see the euros squirm who are gloating right now. Then it will turn again and...
People are people. It will not change. Gloaters gonna gloat.

You missed my point. The 2019 MXoN is at the Assen TT circuit in the Netherlands, not Athens which is the capital city of Greece.

It's France vs everybody else, Belgium vs everybody else, Italy vs everybody else, Australia vs everybody else, Germany vs everybody else, Britain vs everybody else, Ireland vs everybody else, Israel vs everybody else, Canada vs everybody else, and, Everybody against Everybody else.

It seems some Americans want to play the victim, each year. It's everyone (Each respective Team) for themselves at the event. If, as so many think, that other countries would 'gang up', or 'pick on' (And I use such childish descriptions to emphasise just how childish that attitude is), your riders wouldn't make it through the first turn. Just endless, victim culture bullshit being expressed by some .

The USA Team will undoubtably win again. They've just as much chance of winning at Assen as any other, major, Team. It's on a track that no one has an advantage with - because it sure as hell is anything but the 'normal' Euro sand track, being a 'pop up' track that uses the weirdest sand I've ever seen.

Remember Lommel, in the 80s, Americans (look it up, if you don't). Your Team won. It was the beginning of an incredible record of wins.

They can, and will, Certainly win again, but, Only If They Turn Up.

Matthes put up the question about how willing would people be to spend $10,000 of their own money, to represent their Country.

I've been privileged to represent my Country at several World Championships, in different sports, over the decades. Each time it was totally on My wallet, and each time it cost a damned sight more than $10,000. I've also contributed a lot of time, money and my machinery to other Australians efforts at World Championships and International events. All, up, near on / just (well, probably a Lot more, as my records are missing a fair few expenses) over $150,000. And, I don't get things like $50,000/$100,000 (they are the sort of numbers blithely thrown about, so often) Bonuses that are attributed to US race winners. All, My hard earned money - I could have used other companies bikes, for sponsorships, but, f**k that, I make, and ride my own frames. And, to repeat, I've been privileged, grateful, and Proud to represent My Country - even though I didn't place particularly well.

Most other Countries Riders pay their way, or at least part of it, to go to the MXDN. If, their Federation, or even Government ( usually through a form of Sports Fund/Lottery Fund - that it takes a massive effort to get a hold of as they are, inevitably, set up for more 'mainstream' sports) well, more bloody power to them. If one's Team / Federation can't do that, well, it's your problem that You need to address. Special events, Raffles, holding reluctant donors by the ankles and shaking out their spare change, and many other methods, are used by so many CountriesTeams and Riders to get to the MXDN.

There's a fair few Countries that travel enormous distances ( further than the usual US hop over the Atlantic), at Big expense, every year. Australia, since at least 1985, have been at the MXDN, other than the replacement event for that disasterous US MXDN in 2002. They were already in the US, for the aborted event, and didn't get to the replacement, Spanish(?) event - the money was spent, to get to the USA. What a royal stuff up that was ........

I truly hope the USA Team does go to the MXDN. Your Team are treated like royalty at the event. They are, for the vast part, adored by the Spectators, and the Media. If they turn up, they Can win. Then, I'm sure that it will become an 'important' event, to many of those that are so disinterested since the recent defeats.

I've a fair few American friends and acquaintances, from decades of going there and working with them. All, have been very proud of their Country, and it's achievements. Pretty much all of them Motorcyclists, and very much into the MXDN. I've spoken to them, some very recently, and, through your 'dry spell' with regards to wins. None have shown a desire for their Country not to attend. None have said they must have special treatment and get paid to attend. Indeed, they've been aghast / insulted by the thought or suggestion their Team, or Riders, wouldn't, or couldn't afford to pay their way to the event, as so many Countries do.

Go.

Go for the Win.

And, if your Team doesn't win, cop it in the guts, and try again. Americans don't shy away from a challenge - well, that's what I believe. Hopefully, you Americans, do too.

I have been thinking recently, in light of all the Herlings/Tomac posts that take over every thread even close to the subject.

The only thing more annoying than every American fan whining about Tomac losing, might be what they’d do after Tomac winning.

That being said, I hope Tomac never does another MXdN again.

Thousands of American servicemen and women are stationed in Europe. Hundreds of these are Moto fans - and attend the MXDN’s in Europe. I’ve seen and talked to several of them. We must go. Stop the silly talk. Revenge shall be ours.

I think the majority of our guys have "tons of heart" and "very well could win anywhere in the world". I think the majority of our guys want their name in the record books along side all of our past greats in regards to this race. What happened last year had NOTHING to do with who we had on the team and everything to do with circumstances, missed opportunities and bad luck. It is funny to me how the in this thread most of the talk is about the individual riders and not the teams. France has dominated this race most recently because of their team approach and the fact that all they do is ride MX. People talk about how many small countries can manage to field a team but those countries are not put on the pedestal that the American team is and they don't have the expectations that come with it. If our team had not gone on that unbelievable streak of winning this race for years and years this conversation wouldn't even be happening. I believe that everybody involved in American motocross want to win this thing again but it has become a hot potato of gigantic proportions and somewhat of a logistical nightmare. All that being said I hope we field a team and kick ass at Assen!

I hate writing on my phone, it's like drinking beer through a cocktail straw when it comes to my mind remembering everything relevant.) I suggested on page 6 that the US send an all-Husqvarna team in the interest of team spirit and logistics, especially on race day: Anderson, Osborne and Mosiman. I second hamncheeze's alternative proposal: Use one corporate umbrella, move Osborne to the 250 spot, with Webb and Anderson on 450s.

Osborne reportedly rode the factory Husky 250 recently to evaluate its shock setup and was super pumped at how much better the bike was than the 250s he raced. There's precedent for the switch and it's not a slap in the face to AC and other current 250 contenders here, it's mooning their bosses who don't want to go. Keeps everyone in the same pit on race day; just trundle over a bin of KTM-specific parts. These guys train together already, they're all gamers as they call it in baseball, guys who mean to win and find ways to do it, and Roger D could wield his full powers of commanding support in Europe. It might be a last hurrah for KTM's US push under RD, if corporate is bent on MotoGP as the future.

If Tomac wants to go, if AC wants to go, they must train and pit together with Anderson or Osborne as one team, brand notwithstanding. If their bosses won't agree to that or can't arrange it, then send riders who can get with that program. It's going to be necessary these days to have the best shot at beating European nations whose focus is motocross, year-round.

I admit that although Osborne supposedly loves how good the Husky 250 has become, he probably won't like how good the European 250 riders have become. Still, he can mentally process world-class speed on a track, and would set himself to doing it on a 250 if that was the mission assigned him. If he would rather stay on a 450 because that's his job now and he intends to do better next year, that's his prerogative--send Mosiman on a 250, because he doesn't have to win his class, just finish and do well enough.

To paraphrase the immortal words of my avatar: "Enough with the negative waves already!!" Hashing out who the three best riders are and how to send them is making it too complicated. Send the best TEAM, a cohesive unit, a compound, not a mixture: this is most readily done by a single manufacturer, and there's an obvious candidate.

And be ready to employ a different strategy next year. But right now, send a real team. The US has the depth to do that on one brand. Tomac+AC+Forkner is scary good. Ditto with Yamaha. But likely only the Austrian mfgr. will have a full-strength crew available this year.

One brand under RD. It has happened before in the glory days for the US.

everyone thinks this is and US vs. THEM thing. its not. its $$$$. there is no financial advantage for our guys to race it. been like that since the supercross schedule and mx schedule got so long. those series's are just worth more money...riders dont want to risk getting hurt at a NO money race....and substantial costs to show up for teams.

Most on here dont' think its big deal but when u get hurt at race with no financial benefit...and u have to sit out a year or possible shorten a career...thats a big risk when its your main source of income. Smile
Okay I don’t get why some people pull this up and act like every other rider gets a financial benefit from the event but the US...
Okay I don’t get why some people pull this up and act like every other rider gets a financial benefit from the event but the US guys are left out.

Also the cost thing. Sure it costs, maybe a bit more than for some, but I haven’t heard a single Canadian or Australian mention they shouldn’t go because it’s expensive. And like someone mentioned, US is the biggest MX market in the world so it’s hard to believe money would be a real issue. And if it is, someone over there needs to make some calls and take notes from how some smaller countries pull it off. I know their budget isn’t as big, but sure much harder to pull together.

First off I want the US team to go and will be pissed if they don't....but it is very expensive to send a team and your argument about Canada and Australia (or any other country) is invalid as they are both low budget borrow bikes maybe bring some suspension teams. If the Aussie rider is US based then the US based team pays to send their factory mechanic and bike over.
Realize this is not a US rider problem but a US factory team/industry issue as they are usually on the hook for sending a minimum of 8-10 US based riders, bikes and support over each year. So yes I believe that the Fat Italian should help more to defer the costs as we are very close to this not only affecting the US team but the French, Australian and German teams as well.
You didn’t bother to read my whole post but comment anyway? I said I know it costs more for team USA, of course it does. But the market and industry is also the largest in the world by a good margin, therefor it should be easier to pull the money together but it doesn’t happen by itself. There are other ways to get the money than to go straight to the factories pockets, like several people have mentioned. Hold raffles, sell shirts, go negotiate with sponsors to throw in a dime, organize events with profits going straight to the teams budget. That’s what all the other countries do.

As for riders from other countries affecting the US industry and teams, I agree 100% the costs should be covered if they don’t do it already, but it should be the country and the federation the rider represents that covers it just like they do for their other non US based riders from their budget they put together in all the different ways mentioned above.

And with some talk about how many riders showed up at Red Bud last year on borrowed bikes and just some parts and still ran in front of US riders, if the factories don’t want to support it and money is really an issue how about team USA tries that too? The riders do it all the time in the winter when they show up for some of the euro supercross events and they perform well. Might take the pressure off a bit and make for one hell of a story.

As much as I would like to see AC there, it makes more sense for him to work on getting ready to race a 450. The transition is hard enough without having to continue riding a 250 for 6 weeks after his season is over.

AC WILL NOT PASS UP AN OPPORTUNITY TO GO! Have you met him?
