Honda's Electric MX bike

3/22/2019 4:10am
Honda knocked this thing out of the park for a reveal. It still looks like a dirt bike, flashy works parts, and classic CR badging. All that icing on the cake really pulls in the ebike doubters just on looks alone.

Looks little handmade (machine made) so it will take long time to hit shops. I hope im wrong but it took 10 years from Honda to make E-start to CRF450..

As the proud owner of a Freeride E (and an '18 250SXF), I'm ecstatic. The dream LIVES of reclaiming the right to ride and race pretty much anywhere there's a chunk of dirt and two or more people who posses racer's hearts. Thank you, THANK YOU, Honda. There will be at least one of these in my barn - stamp it.

Possibly because they didn’t want to invest in a platform that was destined to become obsolete?

What happens to the batteries when the go bad? Will Honda have a disposal service and plan? How long will they last? From being involved in RC cars, I can say that those batteries don't last for ever. My new trick Shorai battery in my RD350 doesn't take well to sub 40degF temps at all. I like the tech but just not 100% on the batteries at this point.

Very cool. I can’t wait until we get to see it in motion, and start getting some stats/info about it. If something like this would do well it may light a fire under some of the other brands. Which would in turn be a win for us.

I heard that Suzuki is close to revealing theirs, too, they just have to figure out how to mount the kick starter and it’ll be ready!

The only thing I know is, where the gas and the water goes.

Is that a current crf frame? I would guess if they've designed the motor to house in current frame that would save a lot of money. But I'm not sure they can fit motor and batteries into that space

I’m a definite yes. Rode a buddy’s MXR and if the motor feels like it and what I love about Honda egro’s, I’ll be first in line!

I don't see any Alta parts. Thankfully this one is much easier on the eyes.
Agreed!

Those batteries last for a good while bud. I have an electric mountain bike I built 3 years ago and use it daily for getting back and forth to work. 3 years in on this thing and battery still charges to 100% and I have done zero maintenance on the motor. I'm freaking pumped about this!!!! I just recently bought a house with a little bit of land and was dead set on getting one of those Sur Ron bikes and building a little play track but I just might hold off now. Fuck yeah Honda!!

Also, this bike will not be $15,000. They aren't dumb.

I was initially against electric bikes but have been thinking about the positives more and more and my attitude is changing. Besides super torguey easy to ride power... No oil to change, no air filters to clean, no clogged carb jets, no flaming out in slow technical stuff, no stupid expensive pipes and radiators to destroy in a crash, no over heating, no gas to spill, no exhaust pipe burns, no noise complaints (which could result in not only more tracks staying open, but new tracks close to home), which very well could equal more new blood into the sport. How many more families would get there young kids into racing motocross if the track was 10 minutes from the house instead of 2 hours in traffic each way ? How many tracks have we lost because some dumb dumb doofus buys a house near a track and then goes on a mission to shut it down because they can hear it ? They'd have nothing to complain about. Plus the Alta's are ugly fuckers, that Honda is bitchin looking LOL.
They will complain, no doubt. Dust is more of a legitimate complaint than sound. Electric bikes will not allow for riding areas in urban locations.

No shit it looks better than the Alta, you’re comparing a prototype with factory parts to a production bike with stock components. Not to mentions aesthetics are the last thing I’m worried about buying a race bike. . .

I believe I have solved the dust complaint.....You ready for this.................water the track.

Living in Pa I can only think of a handful of times that a track actually got "dusty". Noise has always been the issue here.

I really like this, the thing looks good!

A previous poster mentioned it, this looks like a new power plant dropped into the current chassis. It still has the frame clearance for a kickstarter, lol! Not complaining at all, I’m just a little surprised that Honda didn’t go with a clean sheet of paper design instead of a current ICE chassis. Maybe they went this way so it’d look familiar?

Almost looks like a retrofit..

Now, Alta had some very, very clever people, and they produced quite a bike, but one would think that a company(ies) like Honda / Mugen (please note: I'm no great 'fanboi' of Honda) might just be able to do some very clever 'E' trickery.
How much difference from a current CRF chassis is visible? I’m not a Honda owner so I’ll miss the fine details, but I don’t see anything but a repowered CRF.. not complaining about it at all!

If there's no clutch, why not put the rear brake on the handlebars? Seems it would be a huge advantage to free up your feet through turns. I never understood this with the Alta as well.
