I have put over 160 hours on my SXF450/16. I never had a problem with the motor. By far the best brakes and clutch compared to other bikes so I bought a 17/450 and an 18/450 and a 19/450 - this time a HQV because the price was right. I tried all the other new bikes every year but the KTM/Husqvarna stuff always feels better to me. But to each his own.

My ktm has not missed a beat in 3 years! That is in cold and very very dirty English winters, brakes, battery, engine, clutch nothing.

100% reliable and it has had at least 150 hours from me personally since i bought it

BTW i should add it is not a new bike but a 2013 so they cannot even argue it is because it is new.

104,8 hours on my 2016 250SX and 143,9 hors on my 2013 150SX .

250SX has been the most reliable bike I have ever owned. I have only done regular maintenance (piston, chain, sprockets, brake pads etc.) for it. It even has still original clutch plates in it which is quite amazing because I'm real clutch abuser

My 150SX has been super reliable too for a small bore bike but I have had some bad luck with it recently. I broke counter shaft axle at ~120 hours mark due to chain being too tight due to mud. I did complete bottom end rebuild after that including brand new Hot Rods crankshaft which ended being a huge mistake. The crankshaft blew up juts after 27 hours and had to replace engine cases and weld/replate cylinder after that. Here is the build thread in bike builds section https://www.vitalmx.com/forums/Bike-Builds,46/2013-KTM-150-SX-resurrect…

I've had 3. Two 450s and a 150. Im not a savage beast by any means but I have not had any problems that were not self inflicted. And when I say any, I literally mean none, nada, zip, zero. Not even a leaky fork seal or a broken spoke.

Is that because they're KTMs? No, probably because they are maintained, cleaned, and inspected after each ride. But to think they're unreliable is an internet misconception IMO. And sorry if you haven't owned one you have no say.

I rode the 19 450sxf and really enjoyed it, and it made me want to buy one, but after seeing all of the issues people have with them it is hard for me to muster up buying one. My pervious experience with ktm has not been anything to brag about.

Yes annoying getting to service the filter with no tools. Annoying to have an hour meter installed stock. Annoying to have odis installed stock. Annoying to have a chain that lasts stock.

Annoying having to buy new tools. Annoying to have to remove the muffler/swingarm to service the shock. Annoying to have to adjust the TPS to make it run properly. Annoying to have the spokes come loose every ride. Annoying to have to buy grips/throttle tube on day 1 because lock-on's blow.

I like KTM's. I ride one. But they aren't gods gift to dirtbikes. No better or worse than the jap bikes. Just different.

I've owned three KTM's so far. 2009 450xcf, 2015 350sx-f and now a 2016 350xc-f. I keep up with all of the maintenance and I've never had any problem with any of them. Haters are gonna hate though...

its just toyota vs. BMW. Japanese overbuild and have strict demands from suppliers. Europeans less so.
I’m on my 4th Triumph since 2014 and my 3rd Harley since 2015, I absolutely love them and would never trade them for a more “reliable” Jap bikes. Like I said earlier, most modern era bikes are excellent so buy what appeals to you, do proper maintenance and everything will be fine?

I have a 98 Honda 250 and my brother has had 2 ktms in less amount of time I have had just one bike. his Ktms have had all kinds of problems..

one over heated constantly from day one off the show room.,, wheel bearings don't last. starting issues.broken hubs.. hell he don't even jump much..

The one I owned back in 1990 was just a plain mess. everything that could go wrong did. brake issues, bolt issues, stater issues..crank seal issues, after 15 gallons of gas i traded in on a used Honda and all the problem vanished.

Sorry you have to get off the couch to spend time in the garage. I always laugh at th dudes complaining about Bike work. Personally, I enjoy working on the bike. I did not remove my swing arm tonget the shock off. And to do this once every 20-40 hours, so what. You should be maintaining those bearings anyway. The lock ons have been no issue for me. I have two 17s and I have not touched a TPS. I check my spokes, haven’t noticed issues.

They are all good bikes these days. Even the out dated Suzuki is probably a great Bike for us amateurs.

For what it’s worth, I’ve spent some time on a 19 yz250f. I don’t like the feel, but i do ride the bike very well. The owner rides my 350, and says the ktm is much more refined than the Yamaha. Not hating on the yz, FYI

I considered a new white or orange KTM 2t & 4t in 2017 since reading about how much better the quality had become. After consulting with a couple of local shops that have been in business for a long time I was told that the quality is still not up to par with the Japanese brands. They are lighter on the scales at the expense of durability & longevity.

OP - There are many posts about engine, transmission, electrical, frames breaking etc.. on bike forums like Vital & TT . Personally I've decided to stick with the Japanese brands...

Not even close to incredible, but not as bad as some people would want you to believe. I call mine a failed experiment and will stick to Yamaha.

Well.....there is a ton of orange and white bikes at the tracks , so my firm belief is that everyone secretly hates them so much that they put 100's of hours on them until they fail.....then bitch about it. I own two new Husky's , and I hate them so much that I'm on a mission to make them look bad by telling everyone that I broke something on one of them. I'm still working on trying to break something.......and I'm hoping that around the 150 - 200 hour mark , I will get my revenge! I know damn well a bolt will come loose , or another part may fail , and being an MX SJW I will tell everyone on planet earth how bad both my bikes suck!
Have you tried the banana in the tailpipe yet? I hear that'll do the trick.Laughing

As you can see people like to bash on ktm on here.

But fail to mention the 2015/16 Yamaha frame cracking. The counter balancer shaft issues of the 14 yz250f or the 05 06 yz125 shift stopper issue. The fact the yz250 has a known problem with wearing out the 3rd n 4th gear transmission dogs.

The tps problem with the 2012 or was it 11 crf's or the known fact that the 10 thru 13 crf250r has a problem with the big end crank bearing wearing out prematurely.

That's only some of the known issues i can think of right now off the top of my head. We can play this game all day long no bike is perfect.

Don't forget the 09 CRF450 fuel in the crankcase issue. The 13-15 CRF450 transmission recall as well.

Couldn't agree more. I will never ride orange because of the sea of grenaded metal I've encountered with orange fenders attached. The local shop I frequent became a KTM dealer so I've seen and heard plenty. Obviously everyone here is going to give me a thumbs down and get really mad because they have a KTM. This is my view. Others will disagree. The quality is not on par with the Japanese brands. We have all seen the threads. Most people who have had issues won't chime in here because they know they will get flamed or argued with. Just watch.

I'd bet money 99.9% of the people who spread this have never owned a KTM. 50% of them have never been within 50 feet of a KTM.

Reading comprehension must be a problem for you. No one was complaining about going out in the garage and working on bikes.

I would love to see you try and remove the rear shock on a 2018 4 stroke without either taking the muffler or swing arm off. It'll look like a monkey trying to fuck a football.

When you've been working on Jap bikes for your whole life they are just different to work on.

I have had 7 KTMs. I blew my first one up. Locked the rod. Wish I knew the hours. I was young, new to the sport, and the machine prob had a million hours on it. You can’t blame ktm for that. I seized the ring in groove of another riding coal silt and not knowing how to properly oil an air filter. Again, that’s on me. You can’t suck at maintenance and then blame the Bike. Further, any of these machines can break at any time. Horsepower is high. RPM is high. They get ridden hard in the dirt. And from this thread alone, you can see homies don’t exactly maintain their Shit properly.

I think that stigma got earned when they really did suck. The last 10 years they have obviously turned it around- but before that you were a fool to buy a ktm over any Japanese bike. Not only did they not work right but parts were 3X as much and they would only go back 8 years for parts- while contemporary parts would be backordered for months and months- essentially leaving the bike down so the owner just replaced it and had a story to tell about how much they hated the bike

You've got your opinion and I have mine. I'm not a newb. I've been racing nearly 30 years and am a professional technician. I've had literally a hundred or more friends that race or raced KTM's, more than a few of which I have worked on for them. I'm not saying they are junk, but I would never buy one. I've had two bikes blow up in those 30 years and I'm not talking about putting around. Neither of those failures was catastrophic. This is my opinion. You're not going to change it. Only KTM can do that.

Around here, no issues getting parts. But from my experience of working at a shop, their parts are more expensive.

I didn’t say that I didn’t take the muffler off. I said I didn’t take the swingarm off. Maybe you need to read better, not me. Not arguing that it’s not a pain in the ass. Because it is, and I was pissed off while doing it. But when I go to buy a new Bike, and I’m down for any color these days, last thing I care about is how easy the shock comes off. Fucking erroneous.

Yup. My 1st experience was in the early 90's with a 92 KTM 250 2t from a fellow co-worker at the time. I owned a 93 CR250 & after riding it I was surprised by the disparity in how they handled. I've ridden a couple through the last 3 decades with PDS, 4CS & the newest ones being 17 models with the 48 AER forks & wasn't impressed. They've come along ways, but the euro bikes still have quality issues...
