Every weekend as of late. Max Vohland rides the shit out of his KTM 85 and even his 65 when he decides to ride it.

I can only imagine how many guys like you I embarrassed.
When I saw you in almost last during washougal amateur days supermini you were doing a fine job of embarrassing yourself.

Jesus christ you guys are so easily offended it's hilarious.
No-one is offended by you. They just missed taking your ego down a notch.

Yeah it's happened more than a few times to me. Even when I was closer to my "prime" and still reasonably fast. For me it was actually a good thing in that it made me stop spending money on hop ups. If a bike at such a disadvantage could light me up the bike was never my issue. Grinning

Ha. I saw Bubba at Echeconnee on a 100, and later when he first switched to 125s.

I think one of the funnest things to watch in this sport is a kid on an 85 just killing it. Something about those little dudes and bikes hauling ass looks rad.

No doubt. Up until that point I hadn't been beaten by a smaller bike. Learned a valuable lesson that day that it didn't matter the cc's of the engine or what hp it was putting out. A better skilled rider could smoke most even if they're at a disadavantage with a smaller engine.

Years ago, when I was still reasonably fast, I did an off-road race in the mountains...
It was kind of an uphill special test that took about 40 minutes to complete and you had to do three times during the day...
Mostly very rough single tracks with lots of rocks, holes and roots...
I can tell you when you reached the top, you were spent.
Then you had to go back all the way down to the start, in a ski resort.
Many locals waited for us at the top with their downhill MTB, just to humiliate us...
And man, they sure did!
Bastards.

They didn't wait at the bottom to go up though.

Back in either ‘79 or ‘80 I think, I was out at Indian dunes International track on an RM250, and this kid rolled up with his mom in a station wagon towing a YZ80, and just smoked everybody. Kid was Eric Kehoe! I can handle that!
That's my story! Also AJ Whiting, Johnny Welchel when they were on 80's. I was on an RM in 78 and 79 and a YZ250 in 80.

My dad still tells a story about watching Wardy win the 125 Pro class one night on a bored XR75 at Indian Dunes International.

Was it #38 on a KTM?

Back in the day i was spectating the local pro race at mxgp in WA. RV2 lined up on his supermini in the 125 class. 250s and 125s were on the same line but staggered. Anyways RV2 ate them all up except the the 250 leader. Cant remember who it was.

Next time that happens just pull off immediately and act like you're checking your sprocket bolts. If there's any other Vitards at the track they'll recognize your distress call, approach you with a torque wrench and invite you back to the truck for a beer.

It really is amazing to watch these kids grow up and make their way as they go from 6 to 12 and gain so much skill and confidence getting faster by 3 to 5 seconds a lap each year.I on the other hand seem to get slower by the same amount each and every year.

IMO lots of these kids would compete just fine against A/Experts in local racing. It makes a perfect example of why our sport's "class" system is killing the sport.

Personal experience I always recall, 1980 Shawn Kelly flying past me on the Rio Bravo dropoff and landing about 10 feet further out. Instant humbling Fail for a competitive Expert at the time.

Haha funny you mention that, I was at Argyll one weekend a year or so ago and thought I was running a pretty good pace, nobody was really passing me. Next thing I know I hear this bike just screaming behind me so I look back over a jump and it’s a damn 85!Laughing Fricken Max just motors on by and disappears from view, taking my ego with him.Silly

Man you should’ve seen him when he was still up here. He jumped shit on his 65 that some of the fast guys couldn’t or wouldn’t.
