No kidding! I am surprised they didn't offer his knocked out butt a cigarette and a beer. Boy times are different.

A seizure from concussion does not sound good. Hoping for the best

I had convulsions on one of my concussions (or so I was told because I don’t remember the previous several minutes or post minutes of being knocked out) but I recovered fully even though I had a really bad headache. I even had another knockout concussion after that one and I am solid today. Sounds like his main concern is cosmetic injuries. Just my two cents
First I just want to say that I hope Weston makes a full recovery and gets back on the gate soon. Dude is tough and we all want to see him back.

I too had a seizure after getting knocked out when I was 16. Thankfully I never had any further issues with that and I’m gonna be 34 in a couple months. But it was a scary time. I don’t remember that day much, just waking up in a hospital and the doctor explaining what happened.

I’ve managed face transplants and radical neck dissection ENT suregeries in the past and I can say for sure the swelling he’s probably got is horrible. But, the swelling eventually goes down. And he’s in the right place, with the right people watching his recovery. We should be happy they were able to get him to the hospital where the airway was established. This is great news in itself and no doubt this is nothing short of serious but the hardest part seems to be behind him.

Get well soon WP, sounds like a gnarly injury but luckily there seems to be good medical treatment in France.

Nothing but positivity for Weston and his whole crew as he deals with his recovery, and sorry that they all have to go through this. As bad as his injuries sound, I'm glad there doesn't appear to be any brain, spinal, etc damage. They'll put ol' Humpty back together again!

So I just watched that crash video, and it's exactly 30 seconds from impact to Weston getting rolled over onto the stretcher. Seems like the medical crew really rushed things.

There was so much blood in his mouth that he was potentially going to die if they did not move him fast.

The guys on charge at Paris SX are doing this for 20+ years, they are the Doc Bodnar's of France.

I have seen them dozens of times not moving someone for minutes when they had a doubt about a spinal injury.

This time the blood in the mouth was the #1 issue, have I been told.

With no knowledge of what the personnel on the scene were dealing I would not begin to criticize them. I wish Weston a speedy recovery.

I think we all react a little and almost spout off a bit when things like this happen....we're so concerned and want the best for Weston that our emotions get the best of us. I just pray that he makes a full recovery and comes back stronger than ever. if there's an individual that can it's Weston Peick

Have rooted for Weston going all the way back to his privateer days. Such a scary situation and I wish him and his family all the best. Sounds like it will be a long road back but I believe this guy can make it.

We're all concerned. But we don't need to lose our minds in the process.

These days everyone is so used to instant info, that they expect reports as soon as someone is injured.

We try to provide info when/where we can, but with an emphasis on accuracy and respect for the rider over speed and the internet's desire for more info.

If we can see any positive in this awfull situation, French surgeons (especially in Paris area) are amongst the best in the world and have some of the most advanced protocols in the maxillofacial field according to my father in law (maxillo surgeon).

Get well soon WP.
This was my first thought when heard about crash. Couldn't think of a better overseas (even most stateside) race to have unfortunate incident like this. Aside from the language barrier, hopefully they understand the level of medicine in Paris FR, and at the least have someone close to them to assure them of this.

Cheers

Thank you Xavier, and HUGE thank you to those medics and everyone involved. I have no doubt they did everything they were trained to do, and did it better than anyone could have hoped for. Hat's off fella's.

ps I hope we stomp you guys at MXON next year.

How does this work as far as health insurance when something happens in another country? Despite the injuries themselves, does someone like this lose everything just because of the bills racking up?

I would think bills are the last or the worries but hope the team would have had something in place, not sure if France is the same as the USA health system but the UK (NHS) is free to all.
When travelling abroad "travel insurance " would be taken out & covers extreme sports i.e. Skiing / snowboarding not sure about racing motocross/sx professionally. I was in France snowboarding in Feb & fractured my L2 ,was hospitalised for 5 days & my insurance covered all except the excess £250 ($320)insurance cost £16 ($20) The hospital bill was €1,266 (1,620) / day which covered x-rays & scans ,body cast (thankfully no surgery required) I needed three seats on plane to lay down Lyon to London then London to Dublin . Total cost including private ambulance transfer in France & Ireland was over £10,000 ($12,800) .with being European U can apply for a health card when travelling & it covers 80% of hospital costs.
Prayers sent

Pretty sure in that phone video you can see some bright red blood in a pool in the dirt. If he took a peg to the back of the jaw and lacerating him open, there is no telling what blood vessels were cut, or how crushed his upper airway is.

The first things they would be concerned with is the bleeding and his airway being cut off. The chances of actually causing movement that will paralyze someone after the initial blows is relatively low. Yes, when you have a "stable" patient and a safe environment you take the time to follow spinal protocol. That goes out the window when they may bleed to death in the next 2 minutes or sustain brain damage due to lack of oxygen.
I've worked on people that have been seriously messed up in an environment where we didn't have the luxury of time or safety or proper back boards, just a neck brace in my med bag. None of them ended up paralyzed despite being thrown around to get out.

Super bummed to hear about this, it's been awesome to watch him progress the last few years. Truly one of the hardest working guys out there. Hope he comes back when he's ready.

The flight home is $104,000.00 alone
3 weeks and multiple surgeries in France won’t be cheap either. I’m hoping that his Road to Recovery fund page will get enough to get him home at least...
